PARISH OFFICES
TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME AUGUST 20, 2017
Dear Parishioners, As we come to the close of the summer respite, we may have come to realize the need for quiet in our lives. We are so inundated with events, requests, conversations etc. that we rarely have time to hear ourselves think.
Church offers us an opportunity to gather with people of similar values, and those who strive to lead good and holy lives. Even here in church, there is much noise at the end of Mass. I have had the time to be in Church after masses and have witnessed the loudness of the conversations. People seem to raise their voices to be able to be heard over the other conversations. Yes, there is value in greeting one another and sharing messages and well wishes. Yet, these conflict at times with those who seek a quiet moment with the Lord. Wouldn’t it be respectful to say quietly to one another, “Let’s step outside to talk.” If the weather is not conducive to gathering outside, the downstairs Breen Room is available. I hope we are able to make our church a place of welcome as well as reverence. These two values are not opposed to one another, but enhance each other. When we have the time to listen to the Lord, we will have a greater gift to share with another. May the Lord bless you in these final days of summer, be safe, and respect yourself if you seek to view the eclipse.
God’s Peace, Fr. Mike

YOU’RE INVITED TO EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
"How many of you say: I should like to see His face, His garments, His shoes. You do see Him, you touch Him, you eat Him. He gives Himself to you, not only that you may see Him, but also to be your food and nourishment." ~ St. John Chrysostom
Jesus is here with us. He is alive and lives in each of us. What a special encounter we can have with Jesus each and every day. In Communion we are united with Jesus and
become one. He is our strength and our guiding light. This week at Adoration we are asking that you pray for others as you spend time with Him. He already knows what’s in your heart so look beyond your cares and worries and pray for peace in our world. Please pray that there be peace among all cultures and that Americans unite as one and stop the horrific killing of innocent lives. Eucharistic Adoration happens each Tuesday right here in our own St. Mary’s Parish. It’s so wonderful to see so many of you coming each Tuesday between the hours of 9:30am - 6:30pm. A Novena to Our Blessed Mother is said immediately following Benediction and confessions follow. What a great privilege it is to be Catholic!
Please do not use St. Mary’s School parking lot between 2:00-3:30pm. Please park in front of the church or down the street.

Testimony #4: Why Volunteer?
“I decided to try giving back to God in thanksgiving for all He has given me. I thought I could best do this by teaching religious education. There are three T's to stewardship: time, talent, and treasure. I realize that by sharing these with my students, I continue to receive many blessings from God. The time I use to prepare for the lessons and the time for the lessons fits so well into my schedule that I am always amazed that I manage to get it all done. The lesson preparation gives me the opportunity to spend time thinking about how best to make God's word interesting and meaningful for my third graders. I always liked to teach. I did this in my career as a nurse and I enjoy doing it with my students. Perhaps I have a little talent for teaching, but I think my desire to teach makes up for any lack of talent. I really think that the real reward for teaching comes in the opportunity to share the treasures of my experiences growing up in a Catholic family, being taught in a Catholic school by nuns, and sharing my relationship with Christ with my students. The real treasure is the look on their faces when something clicks for them, sometimes something as simple as realizing that they can talk to Jesus just
like they talk to their friends.” Bridget Schall, Catechist, grade 3
We invite you to serve as a Catechist or an Adult Aide in this year’s Religious Education or “Faith Alive!” programs. This important
work of the Church will be a blessing to you, our children, and the future Church!

assist with group Communion services. Please consider this
ministry, either once a week, once a month, or on a team. Call

serve in this ministry, but are not currently an Extraordinary
Minister, we can help you become trained and commissioned!

rest and recharge ourselves and come back in the fall ready to
sing! Our choir rehearsals this fall, will be resuming on Thursday,
September 14 at 7:30 pm in the church. If you are interested or
have any questions, please contact Gina Marie Iampieri at at 301-

SUPPORT LIFE!
NUN RUN The Little Sisters of the Poor will host their 4th annual Nun Run on September 9 at the Cathedral of
Mary Our Queen (5200 N. Charles Street, Baltimore) with an 8:00am start for the 5K and 1 mile run/walk. Enjoy
music from a DJ, pre-race warm up, live entertainment,
raffles, prizes, awards, refreshments, and lots of fun! Help raise funds for the residents of St. Martin’s Home through
sponsorships and donations. Call 410-744-9367 x126 or visit www.littlesistersofthepoorbaltimore.org for details.
GABRIEL NETWORK 5K Run/Walk Our annual run/walk is Saturday, September 30 at 8:00am at Lake
Elkhorn in Columbia. Proceeds enable our network of
church-based volunteers and staff to save babies’ lives through our crisis pregnancy help line (1-800-ANGEL-OK),
through our maternity homes providing shelter for homeless pregnant women and their newborns, and
through our “Angel Friends” mentor program. For more information or to register, please visit gabrielnetwork.org.
ELIZABETH MINISTRY Are you pregnant or awaiting
the adoption of a child? The Elizabeth Ministry volunteers know how busy the first few weeks after baby’s arrival can
be. We would love to help you out in this time of transition with some homemade meals for you and your family. Do
you enjoy cooking? Have you considered being a volunteer for the Elizabeth Ministry? Help new mothers after the
arrival of a new baby by being a volunteer. For more information or to sign up, please email Sarah Glenn
[email protected] or call the parish office.
FORMULA & DIAPER COLLECTION The last weekend of each month is designated as our collection of formula
and diapers. If you can, please bring any type of formula or diapers, especially in sizes 4-6, to Mass on the last
weekend of each month and place them in the collection bins designated for the parish pantry or deliver them
directly to the parish office. We distribute these items to
mothers in need who also receive groceries from our parish pantry. Call Marsha Raymond at 301-725-3080 for
details. Next Collection: August 26-27.
40 DAYS FOR LIFE FALL CAMPAIGN Join us on

Christmas Bazaar
November 4, 2017
Christmas Bazaar Planning Meeting – Tuesday, September 12 at 7:00pm Please join us at 7:00 pm in the Breen Room on Tuesday, September 12 for our next meeting! All are welcome to share their ideas, volunteer their gifts and skills, or be assigned a task. This is our church's largest annual fundraiser and an "all hands on deck" event where each parish ministry and group is expected to participate or contribute in some way. Ministry representatives are encouraged to attend. Email [email protected] or call 301-725-3080 ext. 225 to let us know if you will attend or to offer suggestions.
Attention Business Owners: this year we are seeking business sponsorships for various aspects of the Bazaar with levels of support ranging from $50 - $1,000. All business sponsors will be recognized for their support. Please contact us to discuss your involvement.
Wine Donations Needed: The Wine Grab will return for its 3rd year where $10 wins you a bottle of wine and may also win you a gift card! We are now accepting wine donations in anticipation of surpassing 275!
Granny’s Attic! Granny is resting up in anticipation of record sales in the Breen Room. Please start saving your gently used treasures for Granny’s Attic indoor rummage sale. We will take your castoffs (tax deductible!), shine them up, display them, and price them to sell on Bazaar morning. We will take tools, toys, jewelry, household items, knickknacks, books, glassware, collectibles, seasonal decorations, small furniture, and more. All items must fit in a car trunk, so please no large furniture items. We cannot accept any clothing or shoes, mattresses, car seats, cribs, TVs, computers, or printers. Drop offs TBA!
Do you own a business or work for a company that has a product or service of interest to our Bazaar patrons? We are actively seeking donations for the Bazaar. Perhaps you can donate an item, perhaps a gift certificate or gift card, perhaps you wish to make a tax deductible cash donation. We would love to discuss the options with you!
QUILT TICKETS NOW AVAILABLE … We are excited to announce that the Bazaar Quilters have finished this year’s quilt, “Freedom”! Raffle tickets are now being sold at the rectory during office hours and on select Sundays outside of church. Tickets are $2 each or 3 for $5. The lucky winner will be drawn at the Bazaar on November 4th.
