40th Anniversary of Monaleen Parish
Our church was built in 1873, as a chapel-of-ease for St Patrick’s
Parish. It lies about three miles from St Patrick’s church and
served a community stretching from the Groody river to Scart, a
further three miles away.
A community by the name of Monaleen existed here for many
years before 1873. In 1971 Monaleen Parish was founded in
anticipation of the growth of Limerick’s suburbs. At that time
there were about 380 homes in our parish. Now we have
approximately 3,800 homes.
The parish was created on 8th
June 1971 and quickly assumed an
identity of its own, helped in great measure by the National
School, the Credit Union and the GAA football and hurling club.
Over the years various other Monaleen community activities were
established. The dozens of sporting, social, cultural and voluntary
activities listed within this directory are evidence of a thriving and
vibrant community.
Forty years have seen immense changes in our parish. We have
seen a vast increase in the size of our community, and a massive
growth of our school population, with an additional primary
school, and a highly successful second-level school. The
outstanding achievements of our sporting clubs at both juvenile
and senior level are the envy of parishes established for a century
or more.
We are proud of our Monaleen heritage, and we look forward to
another forty years with confidence and anticipation.
