Dear Friends, Our Responsorial Psalm today is a powerful reflection for us: It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praise to your name, Most High, to proclaim your kind-ness at dawn and your faithfulness throughout the night. Though these day have been a challenge for us, our loving God is still with us to guide and protect us and to call us into His presence. May we always offer praise and thanksgiving to our Lord and celebrate the goodness and unconditional love we receive, if we just open our hearts. Have a blessed week! Father Fred

GOD’S TIME We either pay attention to or ignore “clock time” as we play in the summer sun and note the earth’s tilt and the lengthening days. We live by time. We reck-on time in seconds and minutes and hours, or we use broader chunks like suppertime and summertime. God keeps another sort of time. God speaks to us of “saving time,” that is, the time of salvation. This sense of time is called kairos, and this time is always now, always present and available, always revealing, of-ten surprising. This Sunday’s readings alert us to the reality and the import of God’s time. Ezekiel and the Gospel of Mark remind us that our labor and our plotting and our planning rest in God. For God takes our smallest ef-forts and makes of them great works. Paul points us to the “harvest” time, urges us to be watchful for its com-ing, and calls us to recognize that we must spend our time pleasing God. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL 2021

We are at capacity for campers for this year. If you were planning to attend Va-cation Bible School, you can sign up for the Waiting List. (we are still waiting for pa-perwork from some pre-registered campers so you could be called from the Waiting List). Check the website for registration information or come to the office to sign up. The office is open from 9 to 2:30 Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Teen Crew Leaders and Station Leaders will have a mandatory training this Sunday, June 13, from 2:00 to 3:30 or on Wednesday, June 16, from 2:00 to 3:30. Teen helpers must attend one of these two training sessions.

Registration Information for the next Faith Formation year will be available in July. We are in the process of figuring out what is the safest way to serve the children of the parish. Currently we are planning to offer in-person classes as well as on-line classes.

Classes have begun for Confirmation Preparation. Please keep those preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation in your prayers during the month of June as they prepare. Please contact Heather Abraham ([email protected]) or Jethro Castillo ([email protected]) if you have questions or want more information. Confirmation will be October 16.

Q. Why do we celebrate the Heart of Jesus in the month of June?

A. Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is an an-cient practice. We can see its Scriptural origins in Je-sus’ own references to His Heart. “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest … for I am meek and humble of heart” (c.f. Matthew 11:28, 29).

The devotion received a surge of popularity in the late 1600s. Jesus appeared several times to a French religious sister, St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, pointing to his heart. During this time, the Jansenist heresy had risen in France, which preached limited predestination for salvation. When appearing to Margaret Mary, Jesus affirmed his love for all mankind: “Behold the Heart which has so loved men that it has spared noth-ing.” He asked for a special feast celebrating his Sa-cred Heart on the Friday following the feast of Cor-pus Christi. Over time, June has become known as the month of the Sacred Heart. ©LPi

St. Anthony Can Find Anything — Even You “Tony, Tony, come around! Something is lost and it must be found.” Did you learn this one when you were a kid? In my experience there are even a lot of lapsed Catholics — or

people who were never Catholic at all — who know that when you lose something, St. Anthony becomes your best friend. Missing keys? Pray to St. Anthony. Can’t find your favorite sweater? St. Anthony. Forget where you parked your car in the mall lot? St. Anth— okay, you get the idea. Whatever it is, large or small, important or trivial, Tony has a reputation for finding the lost things. It’s a devotion that can seem a little like superstition — witchcraft, even? — if you don’t really understand it. Mumble an incantation to a dead guy and you’re guaranteed to find your sunglasses. But as with most traditions that are old, beloved and effective, looking a little closer reveals the truth of the matter. When we lose something really important, what do we do? We make the whole household stop what they’re doing to join the search. Having St. Anthony as a friend means you ask him to stop what he’s doing to help, too. And how he helps is by taking the matter exactly where all matters need to go — straight to the feet of Christ. Here’s the real genius of St Anthony: he takes the most mundane, commonplace occurrence — misplacing socks — into an encounter with the divine and truly all things great and small are gifts from God. He grabs our hand and points to the cross. “That’s what you’re looking for,” he tells us. In the end, Tony doesn’t really find the lost things. He finds the lost people. — Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS. ©LPi

Feast day: June 13

Page 5: St. Mary Catholic Church · 2021. 6. 12.
