Our Lady of the Rosary October 7

The Story of Our Lady of the Rosary

Saint Pius V established this feast in 1573. The purpose was to thank God for the victory of Christians over the Turks at Lepanto—a victory attributed to the praying of the rosary. Clement XI extended the feast to the universal Church in 1716.

The development of the rosary has a long history. First a practice developed of praying 150 Our Fathers in imitation of the 150 Psalms. Then there was a parallel practice of praying 150 Hail Mary’s. Soon a mystery of Jesus’ life was attached to each Hail Mary. Though Mary’s giving of the rosary to Saint Dominic is recognized as a legend, the development of this prayer form owes much to the followers of Saint Dominic. One of them, Alan de la Roche, was known as “the apostle of the rosary.” He founded the first Confraternity of the Rosary in the 15th century. In the 16th century, the rosary was developed to its present form—with the 15 mysteries: joyful, sorrowful and glorious. In 2002, Pope John Paul II added five Mysteries of Light to this devotion.

Mary, Help of Christians, pray for us!

This year’s Respect Life theme 2020-21 as chosen by the United States Conference of Bishops is Live the Gospel of Life. We are reminded that as fellow Catholics we must strive to ensure that the life of every human person is protected and cherished.

Respect Life Prayer

God our loving Father,

Grant wisdom to those who govern us, compassion and courage to those who work to defend human life, and safety and care to every human being. For you alone who formed us in our mother’s wombs, and who calls us home to heaven, are God, for ever and ever. Amen.

In other business: Window Preservation & Cleaning:

Most parishioner know that the stained glass win-dows in our parishes are artistic treasures. Recently, all the windows, both interior and exterior, were professionally cleaned at St. Joseph. We are grateful to our Knights of Columbus Council #2648 for their generous monetary contribution which enabled the parish to successfully undertake this enhancement project for the good of the entire parish family.

May God Bless Us All, Fr. Sam

Pastor’s Pun: What was stolen from the music store? The lute!

In the Roman Catholic Church, the month of October is traditionally dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary and to Respect all Human Life.

Our gaze is turned to Mary, Mother of God and Mother of the Church and the Catholic devotion of the Rosary. In this devotion, the prayers to Mary mingle with the mysteries of the life of Our Lord Jesus Christ through which we care called to mediate in our own personal lives. How fitting it is that Mary stands as the supreme example of respect for all life welcoming Christ our Lord through her response to God’s invitation to bear our Savior.

Mary, Help of Christians

Most Holy and Immaculate Virgin, Help of Christians, we place ourselves under your motherly protection. Throughout the Church's history you have helped Christians in times of trial, temptation and danger. Time and time again, you have proven to be the Refuge of sinners, the Hope of the hopeless, the Consoler of the afflicted, and the Comforter of the dying. We promise to be faithful disciples of Jesus Christ, your Son, to proclaim His Good News of God's love for all people, and to work for peace and justice in our world. With faith in your intercession, we pray for the Church, for our family and friends, for the poor and abandoned, and all the dying. Grant, O Mary, Help of Christians, the graces of which we stand in need. (Mention your intentions.) May we serve Jesus with fidelity and love until death. Help us and our loved ones to attain the boundless joy of being forever with our Father in heaven. Amen.

Son of a wealthy merchant, Francis’ aimless adolescence ended when a failed military expedition led to his imprisonment and complete breakdown. Once home, Francis rediscovered God in the beauty of nature and the ugliness of human suffering, caring for lepers, praying in the little church of San Damiano, whose crucified Jesus he heard calling, “Repair my house, Francis, which is falling into ruins.” Francis sold his posses-sions—and his father’s—to fulfill this command. When his father objected, Francis disrobed: “I return the clothes, your name, and all you gave me: God alone is my Father now.” Later, the pope would dream of a ragged friar stretching forth a single hand to prop up the crumbling papal Cathedral of Saint John Lateran. Francis indeed helped rebuild the universal Church, founding the Friars Minor (Franciscans), dying at a young forty-four, bearing the stigmata of the Christ whose living icon he remains—in the Church and far beyond it. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J.
