Pope John Paul II

John Paul II was the second longest-serving pope in modern history after Pope Pius IX. Born in Poland, John Paul II was the first non-Italian pope since the 16th-century Pope Adrian VI. John Paul II's cause for canonisation commenced one month after his death with the traditional five-year waiting period waived. On 19 December 2009, John Paul II was proclaimed venerable by his successor, Benedict XVI, and was beatified on 1 May 2011 (Divine Mercy Sunday) after the Congregation for the Causes of Saints attributed one miracle to his Intercession, the healing of a French nun called Marie Simon Pierre from Parkinson's disease. A second miracle was approved on 2 July 2013, and confirmed by Pope Francis two days later. John Paul II was canonized on 27 April 2014 (again Divine Mercy Sunday), together with Pope John XXIII.[14] On 11 September 2014, Pope Francis added these two optional memorials to the worldwide General Roman Calendar of saints.[15] It is traditional to celebrate saints' feast days on the anniversary of their deaths, but that of John Paul II (22 October) is celebrated on the anniversary of his papal inauguration.[16][17] Posthumously, he has been referred to by some Catholics as "St. John Paul the Great", although the title has no official recognition.[18][19][20][21]

In other business: Understanding Church Finances:

Recently, a few inquiries were raised as to where do the rental monies from the St. Joseph rectory go?

Some thought all rental monies went directly to the diocese each month. FACT CHECK: All rental monies go directly to St. Joseph! This revenue stream has been a vital source of income for the parish and a tremendous benefit since this income helps keep the parish financially afloat.

May God Bless Us All, Fr. Sam

Pastor’s Pun: What happened when the bakery burned down? The business was toast.

A little boy was playing with blocks and his mother was watching him. He

built a big building and then put a steeple on top of it. “It’s a church, Michael,” his

mother commented, delighted at his budding architectural genius.

“No, Mommy,” the boy replied, with serious blue eyes holding his mother’s gaze.

“It can’t be a church until you put people in it.”

Spirituality of Sacred Scripture:

The expression, “Spirituality of Sacred Scripture,” can have many meanings. It will be useful in this article to examine some of these meanings, and then concentrate on the one meaning in which we use this term in the present volume.

Spirituality of Sacred Scripture can mean a study of the spiritual life based on the Bible. Other sources of insight, like revealed Tradition, are not questioned or ignored, but the almost exclusive emphasis is on Sacred Scripture.

Again, spirituality of Sacred Scripture, or biblical spirituality, can refer to that part of biblical theology which chooses for special study the life and teaching of the spiritual giants of biblical history. In the Old Testament, they would be persons like Abraham, Moses, David and Isaiah; and in the New Testament, figures like John the Baptist, Peter, John and Paul. Biblical Mariology would belong to this category, where the life and virtues of the Blessed Virgin are explored in their scriptural setting and the resulting conclusions are applied to our own spiritual life today.

Along the same lines, biblical spirituality can be a selective analysis of some particular aspect of the spiritual life, like the Holy Spirit at work in the world; or some virtue, like faith, humility or charity. In each case the Scriptures would be the main, if not exclusive, basis for investigation.

On the widest scale, every life of Christ is, in its way, a manual of biblical spirituality. Even when an author tries to limit himself to the external facts re-lated in the Gospels, inevitably the spiritual dimen-sion of Christ’s personality shines through. It is im-possible to talk or write about the Savior without re-vealing something of the Spirit with whom, as God, He had the same divine nature and, by whom, as man, He was filled to the depths of His humanity. Six Jesuit priests, Fathers Isaac Jogues, John de Brébeuf, Anthony Daniel, Gabriel Lalemant, Charles Garnier, and Noël Chabanel—and Jesuit lay volunteers René Goupil and John LaLande—shared the gospel with the Native Americans they met, in languages they painstaking-ly learned, and through images they creatively adapted to the indigenous cultures (for example, John de Brébeuf’s “ ’Twas in the Moon of Wintertime: the Huron Carol”). But their evangelization was caught up in turmoil beyond their control: a smallpox epidemic, battles between French and English trading interests—the traders united only by their willingness to exploit the Native Americans—and conflict among the tribes themselves, Huron, Mohawk, Iroquois. The missionaries’ perseverance despite exhausting hardships, their steadfast courage in facing unspeakable tortures, and undaunted love even for those who martyred them, bore fruit, immediately in Kateri Tekakwitha’s sanctity, eventually in the Catholicism that still flourishes in the United States and Canada. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J.
