St. Martin de PorreS Catholic Church
We are the Catholic Church Community of St. Martin de Porres in Dripping Springs – dedicated to worshiping God and living out our faith in fulfillment of the mission of Jesus Christ as His disciples by: † glorifying God in Word and Sacrament; † learning, understanding, teaching, and living the Word of God; † growing in holiness; † developing a loving and caring faith community following our patron saint by serving the needs of others: mind, body, and spirit.
Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Here in the middle of summer, many people grow vegetable and flower gardens, or appreciate the work of others by buying produce from roadside stands and farmer’s markets. All our readings today embrace one of God’s smallest but most common miracles as a metaphor: the seed and its cycle, and all that it stands for. Isaiah reminds us that just as God waters the earth and cares for it so that seeds may grow, so the Word of God will come and not return to God until it has borne fruit. Psalm 65 describes the cycle of growth and personifies fields that “shout for joy.” Romans has “creation groaning in labor pains” as it waits for its seed to come to fruition, redemption of the body. Similarly, Jesus teaches the crowds by using the parable of the sower and the seed. GROWTH REQUIRES PATIENCE Every child in school has experienced the excitement of growing a simple bean seed planted in a paper cup or watched a time lapse video of the growth process. We watch this miracle sprout in a matter of days, and marvel at the whole process. A seed must be planted and die to itself in order to create a new life. Then it must be fertilized and watered and cared for. But most importantly, one must be patient and wait. Seeds take a certain amount of time to develop and may require being dormant for a while. Similarly, a human baby takes nine months to grow from the time the seed is fertilized. But no matter what we do, and how well we do it, not all seeds will yield fruit. Sometimes the conditions are just not right to allow it. Not all pregnancies go full term. Farmers know the pain of a drought year, or storms that ruin a crop before it can be harvested. Diseases and blight and other things can take hold. SOME WILL BE LOST Growing up in the Western states, beautiful fields of wheat and beans were a common sight for me, but I did not fully understand this parable until going to the Holy Land and seeing the rocky ground that Jesus spoke of. This was an “aha” moment, as I witnessed what a miracle it was when something had the strength and tenacity to grow among the crags despite the arid conditions. What a sign of faith and trust and hope even to plant crops there, knowing that some would be lost! It would seem easier to write them all off, or even less work not to plant them at all. Jesus could do that to us, but he has not. He has faith and trust that a number of the seeds planted in us will bear great fruit. They will not wither and fade away, but will produce fruit, a hundred-, or sixty- or thirty-fold. And his faith in us gives us hope. Today’s Readings: Is 55:10–11; Ps 65:10, 11, 12–13, 14; Rom 8:18–23; Mt 13:1–23 [1–9] Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
In today’s Gospel, we hear the story of the sower and we know that “some seed fell on rich soil, and produce fruit, a hundred or sixty or thirty fold.”

Introduction to Philosophy: Ancient Wisdom for Today Philosophy has been a part of the Western world for thousands of years, and it is often used to help explain the faith, but many newcomers find it difficult or mysterious. Join Scott Fyall and Isaiah Minke, two seminarians fresh from their studies, as they help give you a headstart to learning philosophy in this digital course. In it they will take you through the key ideas of three great philosophers: Plato, Aristotle, and Thomas Aquinas, and show you how philosophy can help you in your life and even your faith. Course schedule: July 15 - 5:30pm: Grace and Beatitude, Farewell For more information contact: Isaiah Minke at [email protected] or Scott Fyall at [email protected]
Bulletin Deadline: Fridays by noon (10 days in advance) via email to [email protected]

Washed in the Blood of Salvation by Stephanie Mire
The month of July is in its 171st year of dedication to the Most Precious Blood of Christ, though devotion to His Sacred Blood is as ancient as Christianity herself. It is through the sacrifice of the Holy Mass that we perpetuate the life-giving oblation of the crucifixion, where with His own life, our dearest Lord poured out His boundless and salvific love for us. This He left us as a tangible gift, not only to sustain our immortal souls, but also, so that filled with His perfect grace and charity, we shall be blessed with a glorious and hope-filled vision of the Holy Banquet table He has prepared for us in Heaven. Just as Adam slept and gave of himself so that Eve might have breath, so too Jesus, the New Adam, does for us. As the Beloved Son of God slept in death, He was pierced by a lance and in the outpouring of Blood and Water, Christ gave life to His Church. Through the celebration of the sacred liturgy of the Mass, we unite ourselves spiritually and physically in communion with the heavenly liturgy, anticipating our eternal life when “God will be all in all.” The Sacred Mystery is more than a mere memorial or commemoration of the Last Supper. Truly, the Mass is an invitation to make present and real the continuous sacrifice of the Cross, by which Our Savior offers His Body and Blood on the altar for the redemption and forgiveness of all. The more we love God, the more we adore Him, the more we receive His true and magnificent Being into our very bodies and souls, the more He will ask of us. For with great and powerful love, comes great and powerful sacrifice. Therefore we must prepare ourselves with a contrite and stout heart to receive Him. We must allow the Precious Blood of Christ to refine us, as gold is purified in fire, so that united to His suffering, we might more deeply feel the joy and splendors He has prepared for us. “There is nothing so great as the Eucharist. If God had something more precious, He would have given it to us.” -St. John Vianney *Image taken from the cover of “Holy Sacrifice of the Mass Explained” by Father Mark Gregorczyk
