This weekend we celebrate the Epiphany or how the three Magi came to visit the newborn Jesus with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh as we hear in today’s Gospel. The gold represents how Christ was a servant King, the frankincense how he is the eternal High Priest and the myrrh how he would sacrifice his life for all of us. This is also a time of year associated with asking God’s blessing upon our homes. When Pope Francis began the Jubilee Year of Mercy he reminded us that all of our homes doors should be portals to mercy. Pope Francis said, "To pass through the Holy Door means to rediscover the infinite mercy of the Father who welcomes everyone and goes out personally to encounter each of them. This will be a year in which we grow ever more convinced of God's mercy." We need to ask ourselves if when people enter our homes they have the opportunity to encounter God’s mercy. When a visitor enters our home we would normally greet them and welcome them so that they feel loved. Pope Francis has asked us during this Year of Mercy to also make a special effort to welcome those who enter our churches or spiritual homes. During this Year of Mercy our Bishop Joe Vasquez encourages all in our diocese to make a pilgrimage to one of the five parishes throughout the diocese where he has designated holy doors. This is an opportunity for us then to experience God’s loving care for us as a peo-ple because we see ourselves on a journey together. These parishes are St. Mary Cathedral in Austin, St. Mary in College Station, Sacred Heart in Waco, Holy Trinity in Corn Hill and St. Joseph in Mason. Visiting these parishes and entering through the designat-ed holy doors allows one to receive a plenary indulgence when one prays for the Pope’s intentions, receives communion and goes to confession within two weeks of entering the doors.

********************************************** We are currently working on some deferred maintenance projects around the parish for the rest of this fiscal year. Any contributions that come in that is above what we need for operating expenses will be applied to these maintenance projects. Our parish building committee has been working hard on planning for our parish’s future. Please mark your calendars for the weekend of January 23/24 because we will have a meeting after all Masses to present the parish building needs and some options for the future. I want to hear your feedback on these options for our future so I hope you can attend one of these meetings. We also will celebrate the paying off of our parish debt that weekend. I encourage you to use the home blessing prayers and blessed chalk you will receive this weekend to bless your homes. We also have the home blessing prayers included in this weekend’s bulletin. May you know of Christ’s blessing in your homes this Epiphany! Fr. Charlie

EPIPHANY HOME BLESSING WITH CHALK

It has been a tradition in the Catholic Church to hand out

blessed chalk at the Masses for Epiphany, and then use the blessed chalk as part of blessing one’s home in the New Year.

The home blessing

can be done as follows:

Use the blessed chalk to write:

20+C+M+B+XX

above the doorways:

20XX for the year; C, M, B for the 3 Magi – Casper, Melchior, and Balthasar – and for Christus Mansionem Benedicat, Latin for “May Christ Bless this House.”

As you are writing,

pray the following prayer: Lord God of heaven and earth, you

revealed your only-begotten Son to every nation by the guidance of a star.

Bless this house and all who inhabit it.

Fill us with the light of Christ, that our concern for others

may reflect your love. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Prayer of Pope Francis for the Jubilee Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: “If you knew the gift of God!” You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God. Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy, you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen.

“«Lumen requirunt lumine».
