Welcome to the Spring 2015 edition. What a difference a year makes, this time last year the front cover photowas of the chalets at Millendreath underwater. The milder winter hasbeen welcome for most as you can still get out and about and enjoy thebeautiful area in which we live. In this issue Dave Keeble has a greatpiece called ‘spring observation’ which makes interesting reading; thecover photo is inspired by this piece. Easter is just around the corner andincluded is a tasty Easter recipe. As usual ANYTHING you want toinclude in the Summer issue please send it to me before the 19th May.

Holland Road Post BoxWe have been advised that the private post box in Holland Road will nolonger be emptied by the Royal Mail. The Parish Council did appeal thedecision but was unsuccessful as the Post Office demanded £940 peryear plus VAT. Unfortunately the Parish Council do not have the fundsneeded to continue to provide the box therefore it will be removed.

New Street LightsTwo new street lights part funded by the Parish Council should by nowhave been installed on the B3253 and on the one way road leading toHolland Road, this resulted in a road closure which we hope did notcause too much inconvenience. Hopefully walking to the shop, bus stopor postbox should be safer.

Parish Council Meetings. You are always welcome to attend the Parish council meetings which areheld in the Memorial Hall, Holland Road, No Man’s Land. Whilst exploring the Internet the other day I came across thisdescription of the Parish in 1870, it makes interesting reading, remember the church was in the parish then.

In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer ofEngland and Wales described St Martin like this:

MARTIN (ST.), a parish in Liskeard district, Cornwall; on Looe bay andthe river Looe, 4½ miles SSW of Menheniot r. station, and 6½ S by E ofLiskeard. It contains the town of East Looe; and its Post town is Looe, under Liskeard. Acres, 3,199; of which 130 are water. Real property, exclnsive of East Looe, £2,802; inc. of East Looe, £4,622. Pop., exc. ofEast Looe, 343. Houses, 71. Pop., inc. of East Looe, 1,497. Houses, 276.The manor was known, at Domesday, as Lant Martin; and it took its namefrom St. Martin du Tours. About 250 acres are under wood. The coast isnoticed in the articles on East Looe and West Looe. The living is a rectoryin the diocese of Exeter. Value, £481.* Patron, alternately the DowagcrCountess of Sandwich and the Duke of Cleveland. The church stands onhigh ground above East Looe, and is ancient but good. The town of EastLooe, jointly with that of West Looe, forms a selparate benefice. There isa Wesleyan chapel, a national school, and charities £4.

A 100m section of Seaton sea wall, originally constructed to pre-vent beach sands drifting across the highway, was extensivelydamaged following a series of storms at the end of 2013 and into2014. The damage reduced the level of the beach by approximate-ly three meters and has left the B3247 without sufficient support orprotection against further storms. To address these concerns, CORMAC Solutions Ltd started workon the 23 February 2015 to construct a new retaining wall. The wallwill be made of 10m long driven sheet piles with a reinforcedconcrete capping beam which is anticipated to be completed inJune 2015.A new parapet wall will also be built to minimise wave overtoppingand provide pedestrian safety.Traffic lights will be required throughout the construction period forsafety reasons.

Despite an outside temperature of 1°C there are signs in the garden thatSpring is on the way. Daffodils have been in flower since early Decem-ber, Primroses blooming as well as the expected Snow Drops. Althoughthis piece is to be included in the Spring edition of the Parish magazine,at the time of writing it is just 10 days in to February so a little imaginationis required to get in to the mood.On the 24th January I once again took part in the RSPB Great GardenBird watch which is an annual survey to assess the number of wild birdsthat frequent our gardens, parks and other open spaces. Anyone cantake part - it only takes one hour, once a year and is very rewarding. My own count started at 08.00 hrs and it was very slow to get going withno birds on the feeders at all. No need to worry though as gradually allmy regulars started to arrive. It is necessary to keep alert otherwise youmay miss a fleeting visit from a not so regular visitor such as my GreatSpotted Woodpecker.A bird more common to my garden is a Buzzard that roosts in the smallwooded area to the south west of the house. It is not just because it isgood cover, he is very adept at catching the frogs that are now gatheringin the pond to spawn. Not included unfortunately on my tick list is a birdthat I hear regularly but rarely see – the bird is the Tawny Owl – such an

17

iconic sound. Many ‘spooky’ films include it’s call – the classic ‘kee-wick’‘hoo-hooo’ – it is in fact two birds, male and female calling each other, thefemale with the ‘kee-wick’ and the return ‘hoo-hooo’ from the male. Some years ago a Tawny Owl broke cover during daylight and alightedin an Elm tree in the garden. I was alerted to the bird by the sounds ofother birds alarm calls, some flying at and mobbing the owl. After a verynoisy couple of minutes the owl melted away in to cover and peacereturned. The Tawny Owl (featured on the cover of this publication) is holding itsown regarding numbers in the wild but not so our other once fairlycommon Barn Owl. This very handsome bird is very much on thedecline, if any reader out there has seen a Barn Owl locally I would liketo hear the details. It should be just a matter of weeks until we can all get out and about toenjoy the sights and sounds of our beautiful countryside – we should allappreciate nature because it can be very fragile.

Apart from crabs, squat lobsters, starfish, anemones, pipefish, sea slugsand sucker fish, it was a very low tide (thebest for rockpooling) so we reached are-as of kelp to find 'mermaid's purses' (eggcases) and the little dogfish that emergefrom them. And the following day one ofour volunteers even stumbled across a 1metre shark in the shallow waters!
