Message from our Pastor
Todays Readings First Reading — The glory of the L shows through Israel, a light to all nations, that salvation may reach to the ends of the earth (Isaiah 49:3, 5-6). Psalm — Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will (Psalm 40). Second Reading — All those who call upon the name of the Lord are called to be holy (1 Corinthians 1:1-3). Gospel — John the Baptist testifies: The one who comes after me, on whom the Spirit comes down and remains, is the Son of God (John 1:29-34). Called To Be Holy With this Sunday we begin Ordinary Time. The readings tell us about God’s relationship with Israel and John the Baptist’s relationship with Je-sus. Israel’s relationship with God is so close, so intimate, that it is through Israel that God’s “salvation [will] reach to the ends of the earth” (Isaiah 49:6). But we know from John the Baptist that for Israel to accomplish God’s will, it must also recognize that Jesus is the Son of God. During these weeks we also get to know Jesus. We begin to understand more deep-ly our relationship to Jesus and what that relationship means for us, who are “called to be holy” (1 Corinthians 1:2). Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Welcome
Dear Parish Family, This weekend, the Church is asking us to remember the important gift of life and calls this “Respect Life Sunday”. Wednesday will mark the 47th anniversary of the famous supreme court case of Roe vs. Wade that made abortion legal in the United States. Since then, over 60 million babies have been killed in their mothers’
wombs. It is a terrible crime against life and we are all called to pray that this destruction ceases. We join to pray for a greater respect of all life and we ask the Lord to bless all of us as we try to courageously stand up for those who have no voice. As a parish, we have lots of opportunities to support Pro-Life ministries and one of those is our baby bottle boomerang project. Whatever money we raise, we can help families choose life and get the help they need for their pregnan-cies. We join all of our hearts and prayers for the gift of life so we can preserve this precious gift God has given each of us. Fr. T.J.
There has been an increase in reports of individuals impersonating Fr. TJ soliciting donations, normally in the form of gift cards. Please note, our priests would never make such an appeal. If you receive a fraudulent text or email, file a complaint with the attorney general’s Consumer Protection Division by calling toll free 1-800-621-0508.
Please remember the recently deceased and their families in your prayers:
Katherine Irwin (wife of Richard Irwin and mother of Courtney and Chris Irwin) Nora Castelnuovo (wife of Richard and mother of Carolina) Kathleen Barry Barbara Nelson (mother of Janice Nelson McCabe) Elvira Guadalupe Rodriguez (Mother of Norma Ybarbo) Duane Edward Hundl (husband of Sherry Hundl) Christopher (Chris) Golla (husband of Janet Golla) Jo Ann Seevers (Mother of Mary Jo Logue) Marcy Carr (sister of Al Wehe) William L. Stewardship of Treasure
Current Loan Debt: $ 7,534,389
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT OUR CAPITAL CAMPAIGN
Why should I support both the Archdiocesan Ignite campaign and our capital campaign? The Archdiocesan Ignite campaign supports the archdiocese in
several areas: Renovation of St. Mary’s seminary, address infrastructure issues
and add a new dormitory Future disaster recovery fund for parishes Rebuilding parishes and schools Catholic school education endowments for all Catholic schools
in diocese Faith formation endowment
Our capital campaign will help us reduce or eliminate our debt of $7,534,389.
Who will be asked to give to the campaign? Will we strive for 100% participation? Every parishioner will be asked to participate through a sacrificial
gift to the campaign, and every parishioner will be given multiple opportunities to do so. The role of our campaign leadership will be to help develop a strategy to appropriately engage the community and encourage sacrificial participation in the campaign from all par-ish families.
How can this capital campaign unite our parish? As Christians we are all called to be part of Christ’s body and our
parish family is part of that body here at St. Martha. Family members by virtue of being part of a family all have responsibilities in that family. And so, with our parish family…we have a responsibility to each other to respond to our Lord’s call of discipleship by providing opportunities for living out the Gospel while joyfully embracing spir-itual transformation. Our capital campaign can be an opportunity for transformation as we learn what God’s will is for each of us.
For the weekend of Jan. 11 & 12 your Stewardship Gifts of Treasure resulted in:

“BRING YOUR GREATEST GIFTS TO THE LORD”
2020 DIOCESAN SERVICES FUND Our 2020 Diocesan Services Fund (DSF) be-gins next weekend. Christ calls us to serve one another and reach those who are sick or in
need, to bless and serve them. Your compassion and generosity is needed by the Archdiocese. When you share your greatest gifts with the Lord, you enable us to reach out to people in this parish and throughout the entire Archdiocese through more than 60 important ministries. All regis-tered parishioners will receive a letter from Cardinal DiNardo, along with a personalized pledge card, inviting you to Bring Your Greatest Gifts to the Lord. Pray about your DSF 2020 commitment, then complete the en-closed pledge card and return it via mail in the special envelope provided or bring it to Mass and drop it in the collection basket. If you prefer, you may go online at www.archgh.org/dsf to make your donation. Your gen-erosity will allow our Catholic community to continue many vital pro-grams and services. THOUGHTS FROM THE LOFT What is a Sacrament? “The sacraments are efficacious signs of grace, instituted by Christ and entrust-ed to the Church, by which divine life is dispensed to us. The visible rites by which the sacraments are celebrated signify and make present the graces proper to each sacrament. They bear fruit in those who receive them with the required dispositions” (CCC 1131). To break down the words of our leaders, these Sac-raments are not only representative of what they seem to do, but also do what they symbolize. When you are baptized, the water pouring over your body sym-bolizes the washing away of your original sin from your soul…AND YOUR SOUL IS LITERALLY WASHED! How cool is that? In the same way, both species of the Eucharist represent Christ’s body, blood, soul, and divinity…AND IT IS Christ’s body, blood, soul, and divinity. Not only were these sacraments created by Christ, but it is Christ himself who continuously performs these dispensations of grace. Fr. TJ did not baptize your child, Christ did (through Fr. TJ). Fr. Jonathan did not forgive your sins, Christ did (through Fr. Jonathan). Fr. Ralph did not transubstantiate the bread and wine into body and blood, Christ did (through Fr. Ralph). The grace we receive from these sacraments are the only real and physical ways we come into contact with God. Yes, we can find beauty all around us and, in turn, find God. But these 7 holy gifts are the only way we receive a foretaste of that heavenly reality promised to us by the new covenant. Pax, Matthew Mondragon “fides quaerens intellectum” – St. Anselm

Novena Prayer: Celebrate the Gospel of Life O Mary, bright dawn of the new world, Mother of the living, to you do we entrust the cause of life: Look down, O Moth-er, upon the vast numbers of babies not allowed to be born, of the poor whose lives are made difficult, of men and wom-en who are victims of brutal violence, of the elderly and the sick killed by indifference or out of misguided mercy. Grant that all who believe in your Son may proclaim the Gospel of life with honesty and love to the people of our time. Obtain for them the grace to accept that Gospel as a gift ever new, the joy of celebrating it with gratitude throughout their lives and the courage to bear witness to it resolutely, in order to build, together with all people of good will, the civilization of truth and love, to the praise and glory of God, the Crea-tor and lover of life. — Evangelium Vitae

Amen.
