He has appeared on “EWTN Live” and “Life on the Rock” Catholic programs during which he dis- cussed the importance of the Eucharist, the Priesthood and the Blessed Virgin Mary. He has also been interviewed by Catholic Newspapers and Periodicals such as the National Catholic Register and Religious Life Magazine. During the Parish Mission, Fr. Treasures From Our Tradition

Saturday’s feast of the Presentation is a day for the blessing of candles. Why does liturgy require candles? In the first years of the church, worship was often at night, and candles and torches were carried from place to place within the worship space as needed. Candles were also a mark of festivity and hospitality when people gathered for prayer in homes, and later on in large buildings with thick walls and dark corners. But even after gaslight and electricity, can-dles were kept. Part of the reason has to do with the warm, clean light of a candle’s flame. Candles are a good sign of the partner-ship of God and creation: wax made by bees, gathered and fashioned by hu-man hands into something beautiful and useful. In order for the light to shine, the candle surrenders itself, al-most as if it is pouring itself out so that the light can flood into the world. The candle of baptism, placed into our hands, and carried again and again, speaks silently of that same wisdom. If you would save your life, you must lose it. You must pour your life out like Christ so that you may be filled with the light of his love.

DID YOU KNOW? Learn How to Help Children Suffering From Trauma With mass shootings, natural disas-ters, and the social climate today, our children are living in a world that can be very scary at times. Children who have suffered from trauma, through abuse, loss, or another tragedy, may have differ-ent ways of viewing the world through the distorted lens of their fears and worries, and often need the help of trusted adults to guide them through their emotions. Many children use denial as their first coping method, so getting them to talk about what's happened and explore how they're feeling and what scares them now is important. Consider consulting some-one with expertise in child development - a psychologist, counselor or experienced teacher might have suggestions as to how best to support a child in the after-math of a frightening experience. For a copy of the full VIRTUS® article "A Parent Handout for Helping Children Heal," vis-it http://www.la-archdiocese.org/org/protecting/Pages/VIRTUS-Current-Online-Articles.aspx.

Broken Bridges When we cannot forgive, we break the bridge over which we must pass if we would ever reach heaven; for every-one has need to be forgiven.

—George Herbert

—George Herber
