Dear Families and Friends,This past year has been one of signifi cant achievement on the Hilltop. The new Science Wing and Black Box Theater opened their doors in September 2014 to a talented and motivated student body. Together with their teachers, students explored and ultimately defi ned those spaces, developing new rhythms, patterns and traditions that quickly became part of the fabric of St. Luke’s School.

In addition to these new facilities, the St. Luke’s endowment grew by more than $2.5 million in 2014-15, through prudent management and generous contributions from members of our community. While our endowment remains modest in size, its growth in recent years has improved the School’s competitive position and we remain committed to growing it aggressively over the next decade and beyond.

The loyalty and generosity of our St. Luke’s community has led to the success of these initiatives and another year of exceeding our goals for both the Annual Fund and the Senior Gift. Many of you have given your time, talent, and treasure to St. Luke’s, thereby leaving a legacy for the future of our school. Put simply, it was a great year. On behalf of St. Luke’s students, faculty, and trustees—we thank you.

The Class of 2015 FieldSt. Luke’s families recognized a true need. After years of overuse, the lower athletic field was in poor condition and needed to be replaced. Donors to this project include the families of the Class of 2015, who dedicated their Senior Gift to this cause, as well as several non-senior families and trustees. Together they contributed significant funds to install high-grade synthetic turf on the lower field, immediately enhancing the value and effectiveness of the athletic program. The Class of 2015 Field was dedicated during Homecoming festivities on October 17, 2015.

S. Philip Klein Emerging Leader Award Endowed Fund Established in 2012 to recognize St. Luke’s students who are of good character and possess strong leadership potential. On an annual basis, a recipient will be presented with the opportunity to attend an Outward Bound program between the 9th and 10th grades. The intent is that award recipients will challenge themselves, further personal growth and understanding, and learn leadership skills at an Outward Bound program that will benefit themselves, the St. Luke’s School community, and ultimately the larger world. Goldstone Faculty Enrichment Fund Supports Two “Dream Grants” in 2014-2015In its fourth year, the Goldstone Faculty Enrichment Fund provided grants to Daphne Teittinen-Schreck, Director of Educational Support Services, and Pat Raffaele, Physical Education Teacher. Thanks to a generous donation by former St. Luke’s parents Steve and Liz Goldstone, this “Dream Grant” allows faculty to submit a proposal describing a personal project or journey that will enrich their lives. A team of peers reviews all proposals and selects winners. This year’s winners had edible and potable wishes come true. Teittinen-Schreck, a New Year’s newlywed, will take cooking courses at the Culinary Institute of America with her husband Dan. Raffaele, or “Raff” as he’s known on the Hilltop, has a longstanding passion for craft brewing. An early brewing attempt literally floated away after a storm flooded his basement. Raff is determined to return to his passion. Now, with some help from his friends-and the Faculty Enrichment Award-he will purchase new equipment and begin crafting his perfect brew. “I heard there were so many incredible entries,“ said Raff. “I was thrilled to be selected and still find it a bit unbelievable.”

Goldstone Faculty Enrichment Endowed Fund Established in 2011 to provide grants to teachers and administrators to pursue personally rewarding experiences, be it travel, summer study, or the opportunity to pursue a passion. Head of School’s Discretionary Fund Allows for Full-Time Fifth Grade Science TeacherEach year, the Head of School funds one or more strategic projects with income from this endowed fund. During the 2014-15 school year, the Fund was able to support the long-shared vision of the St. Luke’s fifth-grade team to hire a full-time science teacher. This addition has enabled St. Luke’s to build an integrated and dynamic fifth-grade science curriculum, fully aligned with the broader fifth-grade program. Capturing this opportunity to deliver a carefully designed, collaborative and forward thinking science curriculum has been critical to maintaining the best possible program for St. Luke’s students. According to Head of Middle School Gareth Fancher, this addition has been a “home run.” St. Luke’s is thrilled to have Chris Mantz as the first full-time fifth grade science teacher.


The Tracy B. Duncan Innovation Award Recognizes St. Luke’s Faculty Who Foster InnovationThe intent of the Fund is to recognize the legacy of Tracy Duncan, SLS Trustee from 2007-2014 and SLS parent of Buell ‘09, Annabelle ‘12, and Christian ‘14, whose exemplary service directly fostered a culture of innovation and collaboration at St. Luke’s. Michael Mitchell, Upper School Science Department Chair, and Jonathan Shee, Upper School World Languages Department Chair, were the inaugural recipients of the award. The 2015 award recipient is Dale Griffa, Upper School Music Department Chair. Traditional teaching of music puts the director up in front. Dale Griffa turned this dynamic on its head by stepping back and putting the students front and center with the Sing-Off. Every student in choir had the experience of forming an a cappella group, selecting and arranging its music, and choreographing, rehearsing and performing it to an audience in competition. The results spoke for themselves in outstanding student performances once again in the Sing-Off’s second year. They reminded us how even small innovations, when successful, tend to snowball into something bigger over time.

The St. Luke’s community is extremely grateful to John Richards Tweedy ’49 for including us in his will. We can be proud to call this generous and accomplished man one of our own. John attributed St. Luke’s for providing the foundation for further success in college and business. He sponsored a hole at the alumni golf outing, dedicated to the memory of Dr. Kidd, who he credited for instilling a love of literature in him. In 1995 Mr. Tweedy wrote to Headmaster Richard Whitcomb about his recent retirement. “I continue to read Shakespeare which would make Dr. Kidd very surprised and happy and I often reflect on how much my years at St. Luke’s have enriched my life right up to and including today.” John made his first gift to St. Luke’s in the late 1970’s and continued to be a loyal Annual Fund donor throughout his life. Upon his death John left 15% of his estate to St. Luke’s School. Other beneficiaries included PETA, the North Shore Animal League and Richards Memorial Library.

The St. Luke’s Parents’ Association consists of all parents and guardians of students enrolled in St. Luke’s School. Its goal is to engage and involve the entire school community through educational, informational, social and fundraising projects. In 2014-2015 donations to the P.A. helped provide funding for professional development, non-tuition essentials for students on financial aid, and investments in capital projects including a record-breaking year for the new lower turf field themed Wishing Tree.
