The Winged Ox May/June 2019
I’ve been lost a time or two. What about you?
There are a couple of times that really take the cake, as
far as being lost goes… Once I was lost with a group of
college friends in Greensboro, NC. With a phone call
home we quickly navigated back to the route we were
traveling. Once I was lost with my husband, Derrick, in
Washington DC. With not much help from the orange
construction barrels and detours we successfully drove
around the entire beltway one and a quarter times.
Even our gps was confused! Eventually we made the
eight hour trek home.
Have you ever been lost? Physically? Emotionally?
Spiritually? If you’ve been physically lost, as in, cannot
find your way on the map, gps seems like the greatest
invention ever. That is, until the signal is lost. If you’ve
ever been emotionally lost, you know that no amount of
journaling seems to help you clarify your thoughts. If
you’ve ever been spiritually lost, as in cannot find your
way through the brokenness and pain of this world, you
know that there is no map or gps that can help.
Jesus simply says, “Follow Me.” “Follow Me,” you corrupt
tax collectors, rich persons, and sinners. “Follow Me:” you
who are lost, you who think you know the way, you who
think you can make it all alone. “Follow Me,” to healing.
“Follow Me,” to grace. “Follow Me,” to peace.
Our Risen Savior, Jesus Christ, simply says, “Follow Me.”
-Rev. Mary Ann Harris Siefke

year. All the years of our life Jesus says, “Follow Me.”
Retirement is no exception! Jesus calls all people to follow him.
Communion Cards
The Evangelism Committee has undertaken the task of
reviewing membership records of St. Luke. It’s a huge job, but
they’re up to the task!
Our constitution states that to maintain membership, a
member of St. Luke must commune and make a contribution
of record once every three years. In order to maintain voting
status, a member must commune and make a contribution
once a year.
Communion cards are found in the pew rack behind each
pew. No….you don’t need to fill one out each week, although
some do…and that’s fine. Please help us out by filling out one
card each year. It will help make the Evangelism Team’s job,
and that of Kathy Cole, who maintains the communion
records, much easier!!

Stewardship S T . L U K E L U T H E R A N C H U R C H
Noisy Offering
We, the people of God at St. Luke, sure do enjoy sharing the peace!
Each Sunday we greet one another with joy and honestly, sometimes it gets pretty
loud. Stewardship would like to increase the decibel level during the Sharing of the
Peace three times in the coming year. Three times we will collect a “Noisy Offering,”
during the Sharing of the Peace. During this time you are invited to drop your coins,
cash, and checks into the designated offering area to create some noise.
The offerings will be designated as follows: June 23: Musicians in Ministry Fund
November 10: Veterans Organization TBA
Bundles of Goodwill
Join us on May 16 at 7:00 PM in Memorial Hall. Enjoy a night of refreshments, fun and
fellowship as we fill "Bundles of Goodwill" for our neighbors. Our tote bundles of care
items will bless residents of St. Luke Knolls, as well as those served by the Chosen 300
Ministries hot meal program at Emmanuel Lutheran Church. Thrivent Financial will
provide the essential items for each bag.
This is like our Sunday morning Action Team projects but will include volunteers from
other churches in the area. No Thrivent products will be sold at this event as it is a
community service project. Please consider bringing a crossword puzzle or coloring
book for adults as a donation in our bundles. Please RSVP by 5/9/2019 to John
Ungerman’s office. Call Sandy Hallman at 610-970-4740.
Thrivent Action Team Projects
Five projects have been completed to date. Thrivent Financial provides $250.00 for
each Action Team.
▪ The Community Clothing Rack Volunteers organized new underwear and socks in
various sizes for their clients.
▪ Shampoo, tissues, water, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes and other items filled the
twenty “Emergency Hygiene Kits” for the Boyertown Salvation Army.
▪ Food was purchased for the Shepherd’s Café at Good Shepherd UCC in
Boyertown. They share information about our Community Clothing Rack with
people who participate in their noon meal program.
▪ Twenty-eight people (maybe more as it was difficult to count everyone busy at
work) assembled 110 goodie bags for Meals on Wheels. A large print word search
book, pen, apple, small bag of pretzels, lemon cookies and a note for “Blessings
and Joy” from St. Luke was included.
▪ The super softball team hosted their yummy Easter Breakfast. Seed money was
used to purchase food for this event. The team uses donations from this fundraiser
to buy equipment.
Thank you notes for the Social Ministry and the Thrivent Projects are on the church
bulletin board. Thank you, St. Luke for your generosity!

I want to thank everyone for buying Girl Scout cookies at

more than my goal was, so thank you all so much for helping
me achieve my goal.

SPARK Activate Faith Early Believers
Acts 2:43-47, 4:32-37
God’s people are one big
happy family. Biblical scholars
believe that the Gospel of
Luke and the Book of Acts were
written by the same person.
Together those two books tell
the story of Jesus and then his
first followers as they became
the Christian Church. The stories
in both Luke and Acts emphasize caring for others, being
generous, sharing life together, and living in community.
Family Prayer
Thank you, God, for all
that you have given us.
Give us generous hearts
that we may share all
you have given so that
everyone has enough.
In the name of Jesus
Christ we pray, AMEN.

Troop Eagle Recap Troop 36
Eric Then from Gilbertsville, Pa was the
87th Eagle Scout from Troop 36 and the
4th Eagle Scout in last 6 months!
Eagle Scout Poem
Fond parents watch their boy where he
Stands, apart from his comrades
today, as they place on his
camp-battered tunic a badge –
An Eagle, the emblem of right.
It seems just a few short months have
Passed since he joined with the
Youngster next door. How proud he
Was then of his Tenderfoot pin
As he told them the message it bore.
How proud he was then of his
tenderfoot pin
As he told them the message it bore.
But the years have gone by as he
Struggled along to learn what the
Scout Law’s about; He practiced
Them daily, the Oath and the Law
Until now he’s an Eagle Scout.
You may smile in your worldly old wisdom at this
And say, “Why it’s only a pin.”
But I tell you no honors he’ll gain as a man
Will mean just as much to him.
The red, white, and blue of the ribbon you see
Are the symbols of honor and truth.
He has learned how to value these fine attributes
In the glorious days of youth.
And the outflinging wings of the Eagle that rests
On the breast of this knight of today,
Are the things that will lift him above petty deeds
And guide him along the right way.
Yes, it’s only a pin, just an Eagle Scout Badge,
But the heart that’s beneath it beats true.
And will throb to the last for the things which are good.
A lesson for me…..and for you.

Verse of the Year “Tenderhearted” S T . L U K E L U T H E R A N C H U R C H
Scripture is surprising sometimes. Often, the Bible Stories of our youth gain new
meaning as we age. Often the stories we think we know by heart yield something
new. I have loved the story of the Exodus for as long as I can remember. Every
year, for as long as I can remember, I have watched the Ten Commandments, on
television during Holy Week. However, a few years ago, this story gained new
meaning and yielded something new.
I will not soon forget, sitting in a second floor classroom at Trinity Lutheran Seminary
for Exodus class. During this class, Visiting Professor of Old Testament,
Rev. Dr. Terrance Fretheim, pointed out that it was God who hardened Pharoah’s
heart. God. You know, the God of love and grace. Our God hardened Pharoah’s
heart! I was most certainly surprised! That certainly shook the Exodus story up for
me, more than just a little bit.
But God who hardens hearts also softens them, even breaks them. As the text of
the beloved hymn, “Here I Am, Lord,” reads, “I will break their hearts of stone, give
them hearts for love alone.” God can take the hardest of all hearts and turn it into
tender hearts, capable of love.
Children of God are tenderhearted when:
We put away bitterness.
We turn from wrath and anger.
We are kind.
We embrace God’s love and grace,
For all people.
25So then, putting away falsehood, let all of us speak the truth to our neighbors,
for we are members of one another. 26Be angry but do not sin; do not let the sun go down on
your anger, 27and do not make room for the devil. 28Thieves must give up stealing; rather let
them labor and work honestly with their own hands, so as to have something to share with the
needy. 29Let no evil talk come out of your mouths, but only what is useful for building up, as
there is need, so that your words may give grace to those who hear. 30And do not grieve the
Holy Spirit of God, with which you were marked with a seal for the day of redemption. 31Put away from you all bitterness and wrath and anger and wrangling and slander,
together with all malice, 32and be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another,
as God in Christ has forgiven you. 1Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children, 2and live in love, as Christ loved us and
gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
Ephesians 4:25-5:2
Look for your very own “Choose Kind” button in the narthex!
And be kind to one
another, tenderhearted,
forgiving one another,
as God in Christ has
forgiven you.
Ephesians 4:32
