Dear Parents:

Parent Survey Result:Thank you to the approximately 83 parents who responded to the annual survey. I am pleased to say that overwhelmingly parents seem very happy with the School in each and every aspect surveyed with the vast majority of questions rating strongly in the satisfaction plus range. As usual the Leadership and Executive teams will be reviewing these results and factoring in any improvements for 2020.

BenchThank you to our wonderful corporate volunteers from BENCH who raised $12,000 for St Lucy’s Bursaries by walking a 21km coastal challenge. We would also like to thank them for helping us at our Volunteers Morning Tea and Christmas Carols Event.

Year 6 Graduation Liturgy:On Thursday 5th December we held the Year 6 Graduation Liturgy to farewell many of our students as they leave us to go off to other places for Year 7. This is always a time of mixed emotions as we reflect on the amazing journey of learning each child has experienced whilst at St Lucy’s yet also tinged with sadness as we say goodbye.

We congratulate each child, whether leaving or continuing with us as they move in to Year 7 in 2020. Each child has achieved amazingly whilst they have been with us over their years. Final Liturgy and Dominican Awards Assembly:Today we welcomed familes to our final liturgy and awards assembly. Congratuations to everyone who received an award and to our new School Leaders for 2020: Karuka Uthayakumaran, Patrick Sweeney and Campbell Dietz. Please see page 5 for our end of year awards.

Volunteer thank you morning tea and Christmas Carols performanceOn Wednesday we had volunteers, donors and special friends attend a morning tea where we thanked them for their dedication to St Lucy’s students. St Lucy’s wouldn’t be what it is without our these amazing volunteers.

Thanks in particular, must go to the class staff as well as the very talented Creative Arts Team who produced a wonderful Christmas Carol event for our guests. Please enjoy the photos from both the morning tea and Christmas Carol performance on page 2.

Christmas Carols and end of year sausage sizzleNext Tuesday 10th December, on the students last day of school, we invite parents and carers to join us at Christmas carols at St Lucy’s (11.30am) followed by a sausage sizzle and picnic on the oval (12.30pm). At the conclusion of the concert, parents may collect their child.

Christmas Greetings:As this is our final Newsletter for the year, let me take this opportunity of thanking you, our parents, for all your support throughout this year. Also, on your behalf, we want to thank the staff for all their work above and beyond to assist the students in all their learning and social skills development throughout 2019. First day of Term 1 will be 30 Jan 2020 and we look forward to seeing our students after a nice holiday break. We all trust that peace and goodwill amongst all the world will reign in 2020 as we remember God’s special gift of Jesus which brings us salvation at Christmas, and we especially pray for all our fire fighters during this time.

Albertus Magnus was a Dominican who became a doctor of the Church. He was renowned for his knowledge in theology and shared this through many appointments as a lecturer in many European universities. The Rose of Lima Prize for:• Care and compassion for others• Love of God• Prayer and faithfulness• Integrity

Catherine of Siena entered the Dominican Family in her late teens, and became a renowned mystic writer. She was an advocate for the poor and sick, often visiting homes and hospitals to care for them. Catherine also became a peace activist, and was instrumental in restoring the Papacy to Rome during deeply factional times.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION AND PASTORAL CARE

Whole School Advent Liturgy: On Monday we began our week with a beautiful Advent Liturgy that was prepared by the Wobbegong Staff and Students. Thank you to Miss Abendanon, Mrs Ledlin and Mrs Manzatti who assisted in providing the special symbols for this liturgy, and helping to prepare the booklet and presentation. The children loved seeing the Advent Wreath and Nativity Scene come out – no doubt there is much excitement in your households, too!

Year 6 Graduation: This week, the St Lucy’s school community celebrated the end of the Primary School years with our Year 6 students. Fr David helped lead the beautiful liturgy which was prepared by the Stage 3 staff. It allowed us all the opportunity to reflect on many memorable moments shared with these special students throughout their time at St Lucy’s. Their families and friends also enjoyed having the chance to share in the excitement and sacredness of this occasion, as we thanked our Year 6 students for the gift they have been to us, and wished them well for their future!

End of Year St Lucy’s Liturgy: To begin our end of year assembly on Friday this week, we held our St Lucy’s liturgy whose Feast Day falls on December 13th. The theme of the liturgy was ‘light’ which was the basis upon which we reflected on the wonderful year it has been, and the ‘light’ that has been cast upon this special community!

Farewell to Mrs Maria Genford: Last Thursday at our Staff Meeting, we thanked and farewelled the lovely Mrs Genford. Maria has been a wonderful colleague and

educational assistant at St Lucy’s for the last 17 years. She has played a massive role in ensuring the liturgical and religious life of the school has been upheld over the years, as well as to bring much cause for celebration amongst the staff with her beautiful Birthday morning teas, legendary Halloween and Melbourne Cup day events, never to be outdone Book Week costumes, as well as the organiser of many a successful Footy Tipping competition. As well, she has always shown dedication, compassion and tremendous amounts of care to the students and families she has encountered throughout her time here . As she heads towards her very deserving retirement, we send her our every best blessing as she enjoys time with her family, especially in her newest role as a grandmother! We wholeheartedly thank her for the gift she has been for our community for so many years!

C3 Community Church Wahroonga: We have been so wonderfully supported throughout the year by our friends at C3. They have provided four shopping trips for parents and carers, supplied beautiful Christmas hampers and supported our Mum’s Night Out events and Men’s Evenings.

They extend a warm invite to all our families to attend their Christmas Carols event on Sunday 15th December from 4.30pm within the grounds Wahroonga Public School, aka ‘The Bush School’. There will be jumping castle, Kindy farm and other wonderful treats available to enjoy!

CREATIVE ARTS NEWSIt has been a wonderful year of creativity and artistry at St Lucy’s! The students have all developed technical skills and become more confident in the Creative Arts Studios. They are naturally gifted, spontaneous and joyful!

We are looking forward to sharing Christmas Carols with you all on Tuesday 10th. Take a look at some students putting the final touches on their Nativity backdrop!

The January Holiday Program is filling up but we do still have some places available…

Congratulations to our Theatre Project students for producing some wonderful short films this year. Their final film production is called ‘Australia’s Got Circus’ and follows a group of clowning hopefuls on their journey to being circus performers, and the judges who will critique them! The students had a great time with this new medium for performance and we look forward to sharing some clips with you soon.

Theatre Project, Dance Project and Art Project will recommence in Term 1. If you are interested in any of these projects for your child, please send me an email. alip@stlucy’snsw,edu.au. In the meantime, have a wonderful, merry and safe Christmas FULL of Art, Music, Dance and Drama.

THERAPY NEWSDear families,It’s been quite a year! December is always a time for reflection, and it’s incredible to think back on this year, with all its challenges, achievements, excitements and disappointments. It really has been a year that’s contained a bit of everything. It will also be my last year at St Lucy’s. I’ll be moving on at the end of this year. I will greatly miss the time spent with the students, staff and families in this wonderful community. May you be happy. May you be well. May our paths cross happily a little further down the track.

Speech Pathology

At this time of year, the main message we all need is “Happy Christmas”. If we’re signing, we can use the sign for happy (see here http://www.auslan.org.au/dictionary/words/happy-1.html), and the sign for Christmas (see here http://www.auslan.org.au/dictionary/words/Christmas-1.html).

The sign for Christmas and Santa Claus are the same, and the origin of the sign is a reference to Santa’s long, bushy beard.
