  • Pentecost Sunday Sunday, May 24th, 2015

Pentecost Sunday "'Rivers of living water will flow from within him who believes in me.' He said this in reference to the Spirit." Rivers of living water. What does this image make us think of? Something active. Something dynamic and changing, yet constant and dependable. A river with living water is not stagnant; it is not silent, but rather it speaks. This river is not mucky or full of algae. This river is clear, beautiful, refreshing, and life-giving. It draws people to its banks by providing the kind of water that sustains life and the kind of scenery that is a joy to behold.

Those who believe in Jesus will be like this river. Through the Spirit of Christ, which first came upon Christian believers at Pentecost and which came upon us at our baptism, we become a source of "living water." Instead of being motionless, dull, murky, unproductive people, we are strengthened by God's power to be dynamic, refreshing, and life-giving.

This isn't automatic, however. We must cooperate with the Spirit that has been given to us. Those of us who have received confirmation have been sacramentally gifted with the fullness of the Spirit, but that doesn't mean that the living water is flowing at full speed. As St. Paul wrote in his second letter to Timothy, we need to "stir into flame the gift of God" (1:6). The flame may be there, but if we don't fan it through prayer, virtuous living, spiritual formation, and frequent reception of the sacraments, then it will never burst forth with the full power that it could have. But let us take heart! Even this process of "fanning" is made easier when we call upon the Holy Spirit to help us. For St. Paul reminds us today that "the Spirit too comes to the aid of our weakness."

Special Collection for Victims of Nepal Earthquake

Bishop Peter A. Libasci is asking Catholic parishes across New Hampshire to take up a special free will offering the weekend of May 30-31 to support recovery efforts in Nepal following last month’s devastating earthquake.

“The generosity of the Catholic people of New Hampshire is evident by the strong and ready response they have always shown following such tragic events. I have confidence that they will again respond in a true spirit of universal love. Please inform them of my deep appreciation for their heartfelt donations and ongoing prayers” , said Bishop Libasci. “Given the reports of overwhelming devastation it seems likely that the country will need a long time to recover,” he wrote. “May our humble efforts bring some comfort to those affected, and may our prayers for the victims and relief workers give them strength as they begin to rebuild.”

Donations collected during this free will offering will benefit Catho-lic Relief Services, the international humanitarian agency representing the U.S. Catholic Church. CRS is already on the ground providing relief and assistance in coordination with Caritas Nepal. For more information about CRS efforts in Nepal, or to donate online, please visit www.CRS.org.

Ministry to Visit the Homebound Has Grown! We reach out to approximately 50 people now, most once a week, several once a month. These people are all located around the Nashua area, however they are no longer able to make it to mass. We could use more help with this very important task, bringing Communion to the sick. If you would like to join us in these efforts, please call Carmen Dussault at the rectory office. She will be happy to go over the schedule and procedure with you. Thank you!
