Why do Mental Health Services
need to move?
Although the acilities at the City and
HackneyCentreforMentalHealth(based
atHomertonHospital)arenotold,
guidance about privacy and dignity has
changed since the unit was built 15 years
ago. We would like to develop six wards
at St Leonard’s. Two o these would be
male wards, one would be a emale ward, one would be a psychiatric intensive
care ward and one would be a mixed
gender but with separate areas or men
and women to use. The sixth ward would
be an assessment ward or older people.
Altogether there would be 115 beds.

We would like to provide other acilitiessuch as a multi-aith room and a special
amily visiting room.
We are keen to provide a sae, homely and
therapeutic environment or local people
who experience mental health difculties
i they need to come into hospital.
Why St Leonard’s?
St Leonard’s is a central point or peopleliving in the south west o the borough. The ‘Bigger, Brighter, Better’ consultationthat took place in 2006 recommended thatSt Leonard’s would be the site or the
Primary Care Resource Centre in South West Hackney.
St Leonard’s is a place that local peopleassociate with health care so it eelsright to continue that heritage. It providesthe right amount o space to design andbuild buildings that will be light, airy and spacious.
It is a great location or local people to getto and or visitors and sta rom urther
afeld to travel to. There are a range o bus routes passing by and Hoxton stationon the newly extended East London Line
will open in 2010. The existence o goodtransport networks will help us to recruithealthcare sta.
There will be minimal parking on thesite as part o the Council’s green travel
plan. We are keen or our sta to walk, cycle or use public transport to get to work to reduce any negative impact onthe environment.
We think the location will help us toattract people to come and work in localhealth services. Hoxton Square eatures
very popular day and night lie and theChinese and Vietnamese restaurants on
Kingsland Road are a draw. Local shopsand businesses should beneft rom theincrease in people working in the area andthe whole development will contributeconsiderably to the regeneration o the area.

The St Leonard’s Hospital site has
always played a big part in healthcare
in Hackney. Originally a Workhouse,
it became an inrmary in 1871. In
the Second World War, it was the rst
hospital to receive air-raid casualtiesduring the London Blitz.
St Leonard’s continued to unction
as a general hospital until 1984
and latterly has become a centre
or co-ordinating primary care and
community services in the borough.
As health services have evolved over
time, so has St Leonard’s, and more
change is in the pipeline to develop
the right kind o services to meet the
needs o the local population.
Background
In 2006, NHS City and Hackney conducted
the ‘Bigger, Brighter, Better’ consultation
which proposed that GP surgeries operate
rom ewer, more modern buildings.
It also proposed that our ‘primary care
resource centres’ be built across Hackney
to deliver a wider range o services closer
to where people live. These ideas were
supported by local people, and we are
working hard to progress these plans.
The our primary care resource centres
will be located as ollows:
North East - site not yet chosen –
North West - Woodberry Down area –
South East - Old Hackney Hospital site –
South West & the City - St Leonard’s –
East London NHS Foundation Trust is
keen to provide a modern therapeutic
environment or local people who need
inpatient mental health care.

What will be involved?
The building which is currently the
headquarters or NHS City and Hackney
is part o a conservation area. We are
committed to preserving historically
important buildings so the ront or
acade o the building on Kingsland
Road will be preserved.
We hope to demolish the buildings in the
rear o the site to make way or the new
purpose built modern acilities.
When will this happen?
We hope that the work will begin
in Spring 2010.
How long will it take to build?
It is estimated that the Primary Care
Resource Centre will take two years to
complete and the mental health unit
approximately the same time ater.
