Before he was arrested, but knowing what was going to happen, Jesus

spoke with his disciples and promised them that the Father would send an Advocate, the Holy Spirit, to be with them always. Tonight, at the Vigil Mass for Pentecost, we focus on the anticipation of this gift. Therefore, this evening we pray for the Holy Spirit to come down upon us and sanctify our lives and our world. Jesus charged his disciples to go out to all nations, baptizing, proclaiming the gospel, and making dis-

ciples. But he told them to wait in Jerusalem, that they would receive power from on high. In today’s first reading, the disciples receive that power. Immediately, they can speak in tongues. Everyone gathered in the city can understand them. Luke, the author of Acts, names sixteen cities, regions, and cultures to give the idea that every nation on earth was represented. With the Holy Spirit, the disciples could now communicate with people of all nations, and therefore could carry out Jesus’ mission. June 9, 2019 31

From the beginning, God has promised not to leave us. In Genesis, God spoke to Jacob in a dream, saying, “Know that I am with you . . . I will never leave you” (Genesis 28:15). In John’s Gospel, Jesus promises his disciples, “I will not leave you orphans” (John 14:18). Now, in one of the Gospel passages we may hear today, Jesus promises “another Advo-cate to be with you always” (John 14:16). Is there any doubt that God will never leave us? God is with us. And we are with God.

Today our Jewish friends celebrate Shavuot, the Feast of Weeks, commemorating the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai. They recall how their ancestors entered into a cove-nant with God by promising obedience to the Law. This covenant, this promise of God’s enduring presence with humanity, begun with Noah, given on Mount Sinai to Moses, given in a new form at the Last Supper to the apostles, now given in the upper room to the disciples, continues to be extended to us today.

Is lit for the eternal rest of Raul De La Garza, Sr.† June 9, 2019 through Saturday, June 15, 2019 "The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the

glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is the light." - Revelation 21:23

. . Y no te abando-naré” (Génesis 28, 15).

The Weekend Collections for June 1-2, 2019: $ 5,947.83

On 6-29-30-2019 we will be having the Peters Pence Second Collection

for the Archdiocese of SA.

Summer just got better!! Join us for Vacation Bible School for Children 4-12 years of age. July 8th-12th from 6pm-8:30pm

Registration begins this Monday, June 3rd. You can come by the parish office to register between 8am-5pm (we close from 12pm-1pm for lunch). A small donation of $10 will be re-quested at the time of registration.

Summer is a much-needed treat. In the midst of fun, it’s a good idea to pay attention to our spiritual life. Thankfully, we can continue in the carefree style of summer and still enjoy a growing relationship with God. In the midst of fun, it’s a good idea to pay attention to our spiritual life. Thankfully, we can continue in the carefree style of summer and still enjoy a growing relationship with God. Our tips for staying on track are below. 1. Stick to quick reads. Summer is the perfect time to invest in a devotional. Ask friends for recommendations based on the type of study you’d like to do then visit your local bookstore, place an or-der online, or download an electronic version. The key is to buy something you’ll actually have time—and make time—to read. Shoot for one- to two-page readings with a central theme you can meditate on throughout the day. 2. Write out your prayers. Get in touch with your inner teen—the one who expressed her emotions freely and dreamed without hesitation. That girl knew how to journal. Grab a pen and a notepad, and jot down your prayers. You can write in paragraphs, make lists, or even draw. Embrace the season by indulging your creative side. Open up your heart and mind to what God has to say and what He wants you to do. 3. Maintain a schedule. If you have school-aged kids, you know the joy that is the end of summer and a return to normalcy. June and July’s ever-changing activities can feel chaotic. Our relationship with God keeps us grounded—a foundation we desperately need during these hot months. While everything else is off kilter, maintain a schedule in your devotional life. Pick a time of day when you can have a moment alone. Do your best to take those minutes—few as they may be—as often as you can. This structure will add balance to your summer. 4. Act on your beliefs. Use days off to your family’s benefit. Talk about one thing you could do together to minister to someone else. This might mean partnering with an existing ministry or coming up with your own idea. Consider your family’s unique pas-sions and abilities and ask God to guide your actions. You might help build a home, serve food, clean up a street, mow a yard, or organize a neighborhood sale to benefit peo-ple in need. Whatever you do, be sure it’s a stretch for both you and your kids. When you step outside your comfort zone to help someone else, you experience God’s love in a whole new way. What a wonderful thing to do together as a family! Of course, it’s also okay—and encouraged—for you to relax. Go on a trip, read a beach book, and watch the sunset. Do a fair amount of nothing.

Blessing of Graduates Let us unite our hearts in prayer

and entrust to the hands of the Lord those who will be graduated tomorrow.

May God who began this good work in you carry it through to completion,

enabling you to use your talents to the fullest. May God give you the grace to make wise choices

and to be faithful to your commitments, always confident in the support

of those who love you. May God bless you

with discomfort at easy answers, half-truths, and superficial relationships,

so that you will live deep within your heart. May God bless you with anger at injustice,

oppression, and exploitation of people, so that you will work for justice,

equality, and peace. May God bless you with tears

to shed for those who suffer from pain, rejection, starvation, and war,

so that you will reach out your hand to comfort them and change their pain into joy. May God bless you with the foolishness to think

that you can make a difference in the world, so that you will do the things

which others tell you cannot be done. May your integrity be a gift to the world

and may the Spirit of God be with you always. Amen.
