12th Sunday in Ordinary Time –A-
Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a German Lutheran pastor.
He was born in 1906 and died in 1945. He was a
founding member of the Confessing Movement that
arose in Germany in opposition to the Nazi regime. In
1937 he published a book entitled in German “The Act
of Following.” It was eventually translated into Eng-
lish under the title “The Cost of Discipleship.” It even-
tually became a classic of Christian thought. It was
required reading during my first year of graduate
school in theology. One of the most quoted parts of
the book deals with the distinction between what he
calls “cheap” and “costly” grace. Cheap grace is grace
without discipleship and the cross. Costly grace com-
pels a person to submit to the yoke of Christ, to follow
in his footsteps even if it involves the cross of suffer
and death.
Bonhoeffer lived what he wrote and preached. His
staunch resistance to the Nazi dictatorship, including
vocal opposition to Hitler’s euthanasia program and
genocidal persecution of the Jews, led to his arrest in
April 1943 by the dreaded Gestapo. He was impris-
oned for a year and a half and later transferred to a
Nazi concentration camp. While there he was accused
of being associated with a plot to assassinate Hitler.
He was quickly tried and executed by hanging on
April 9, 1945, just as the Nazi regime was collapsing.
Today’s readings offer us examples of this kind of in-
tegrity, the cost one might have to pay because of it
and the source of strength needed to be faithful to it.
Jeremiah’s prophetic message of condemnation met
with resistance from both the political and religious
officials of his day. Even his friends turned against
him. His very life was in jeopardy. Still, he was not
deterred from his commitment. Rather he relied on
God alone: “The Lord is with me like a mighty cham-
pion.”
In the Gospel we see Jesus exhorting his disciples to
stand firm in the face of similar persecution. He tells
them to proclaim the Gospel fearlessly and to acknowl-
edge their commitment to him, regardless of the price
they may have to pay for their steadfastness. Jesus as-
sures them that even though they may have to endure
physical suffering, the God who is attentive even to
sparrows will certainly care for them.
Few of us will ever find ourselves in situations like
Bonhoeffer, Jeremiah or the first disciples of Jesus. But
we are all called upon to acknowledge our Christian dis-
cipleship by publically witnessing to our Christian val-
ues of love, compassion, mercy, human dignity and jus-
tice for all. In so many ways, our society seems to dis-
dain such values. It even ridicules those who stand for
them. Still, this is the kind of integrity expected of all of
us. Our world is in desperate need of it.
