Service Team from St. Luke’s
To Go to Honduras
A service team from St. Luke’s heads to El Hogar
Agricultural School farm outside Tegucigalpa,
Honduras, on February 14, 2014. The trip to will
be a week long – Friday to Friday. The service
team envisions broadening the rela#onship with
El Hogar, as approved by St. Luke’s Vestry.
The full name of the ministry, El Hogar de Amor y
Esperanza, means, “The Home of Love and Hope.”
It provides shelter, educa#on and opportuni#es
for the poorest of the na#on’s children. The
ministry began in 1979, when two Episcopalians
began providing shelter for homeless Honduran
children. It now operates an orphanage, a trade
school, and an agricultural school, providing for a
total of about 260 students and is affiliated with
the Diocese of Honduras. For more informa#on
on El Hogar and ways to be a part of this ministry,
visit the website at www.elhogar.org. The
website gives detailed informa#on on the service
team experience at www.elhogar.org/get-
involved/service-teams/.
There currently are eight members of St. Luke’s
on the team. Room and board per team member
is $200 for the week, other costs will be airfare. If
you don’t feel able to go to Honduras, you can be
part of the service team by making a contribu#on
to the St. Luke’s team effort. Each team is asked
to donate a $2,000 team project fee, and help to
offset expenses would also be appreciated.
If you are interested in being a part of this
service team, please contact Andy Storjohann
(208-660-0066) or Fr. Pat (208-659-2325).

Lessons and Carols
Sunday, December 1, at the 10:30 a.m. service
The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols originated in England on Christmas Eve, 1918, in the chapel of King's College, Cambridge University. Consisting of nine scripture readings alternating with carols sung by the choir, it narrates the Incarnation.
Although primarily an Anglican tradition, the service has been widely used by churches of various denominations throughout the world. We will use an abbreviated version of Lessons and Carols, incorporating congregational singing, on the first Sunday of Advent, December 1.
Contact Susan Pierson (208-762-9878) with any questions about St. Luke’s music programs.

ST. LUKE’S KENT KIMBALL TAKES THE PODIUM
It’s 2001, London. St. Paul’s Cathedral. Travelers Kent and Norilee Kimball are transfixed by
the thrilling sounds of an unfamiliar Haydn Mass. Kent to Norilee – “Someday I’m going to
conduct that.”
Fast forward to November 2013. The Worship Theater of the KROC Center, Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. The
Northwest Sacred Music Chorale’s new Ar#s#c Director raises his baton and … Voila! It was Kent
Kimball, wringing every ounce of nuance and emo#on from the singers and instrumentalists arrayed
before him, conduc#ng Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass in the Chorale’s first concert of the 2013 – 2014
Season.
Though Kent’s mother was a talented pianist, organist and composer, his dad -- a newspaperman and
publisher -- was skep#cal of his third son’s ability to earn a proper living from performing, and urged a
more prac#cal, lucra#ve course of study. Ergo, a degree in Business Administra#on, which has, in fact,
served him and his family well. About the same number of hours in music, however, tes#fies to the
younger Kimball’s persistence in exploring and fine tuning his first love. Growing up and living in the
Southern California area as a student and young man offered Kent opportuni#es and privileges of
studying under such greats as Robert Shaw, Roger Wagner and Charles Hirt – “the greatest choral
directors in North America.”
During a s#nt in the Navy, between predic#ng weather and later flying, Kent sang in the Naval Air
Training Command Choir based at the Naval Air Sta#on at Pensacola, but performing throughout the
country at all kinds of events. At #mes the Choir shared the field with the Pageant of Flags and the Blue
Angels; perhaps these experiences account for his insistence on an almost military precision in his
singers.
He brings to the Chorale a breadth of experience in sacred and secular choral music, madrigal and
chamber singing, big band sounds and opera and musical theater, and a commitment to excellence that
is infec#ous.
We live in an era where many churches are totally without a choir or the resources to present the
world’s loveliest and most s#rring music. Kent sees the Chorale’s tradi#on of marrying the talents of its
60-some-odd members with those of the many professional musicians available in our area as a unique
forum, where the “Great Works” can be brought to life for audience and performers alike.
Each piece of music is defined by key, mode, tempo, #me signature and a host of other aspects which
contribute to its character. Each concert conductor brings parts of himself to the performance in choice
of instruments, in interpreta#on, and in involving both performers and audience in the living thing that
is great music. Kent’s style, of course, varies with the composi#on. He approaches a gentle, spiritual
and moving piece with a reverence that borders on prayerful. Then again, with more forceful, dynamic
or energe#c pieces – well, if a baton counted as a weapon we’d have an armed luna#c in a tux.
What does Kent Kimball bring to our community through his leadership of the Chorale? “Great music
done well has the power to inspire us, to bring us wonder, to change us.”
Well said. Amen.

Blue Christmas/Longest Night Service Saturday, December 21, 5:30 p.m.
The bright, busy season of making merry with family
and friends is upon us. Advent oAen is a #me of joy,
an#cipa#on, excitement and happiness. But for
many, this is NOT the “most wonderful #me of the
year.” This #me of joy and expecta#on oAen can be
overshadowed by the pain and hurt many people
experience during this season, when the world's
merriment puts their grief, loneliness or sorrow in
stark contrast.
Blue Christmas/Longest Night is a worship service
that typically takes place on or near the winter
sols#ce, which is the longest night of the calendar
year. It is a service that offers comfort, hope and
healing for anyone struggling with loss, depression,
isola#on or grief during the Advent season. This
service also may comfort persons separated from
loved ones by distance, military deployment, the
break-up of a family, and even those who are
displeased with the commercializa#on of Christmas.
St. Luke's will offer this service on
the winter sols#ce, Saturday,
December 21 at 5:30 p.m. For
more informa#on, please contact
Carla Noonan (208-659-1707 or
