The wing spans of the bats had to match the arm spans of the students. This was a real head scratcher which required the use of measurement and engineering skills. Mrs. Soto was there to guide, but the students had to be independent workers and effective problem solvers to be successful. Their very spooky bats will be displayed outside the second grade classroom. Our third, fourth, and fifth grade students were treated to an exciting, educational assembly by the El Cajon Police Department. Officer Michael Murphy and his canine partner, Raico, showed the kids how canine officers are trained to identify certain smells to help their human partners in their police work. They also got to see a demonstration of Raico bringing down a "criminal" (another police officer). Students learned that when Officer Murphy is in uniform, Raico is on duty, and when Office Murphy is in regular clothes, Raico is just a dog. Each student was given a Canine Officer trading card as a souvenir. Tomorrow is our monthly Spirit Day. This month's theme is "Halloween Colors". We advertised it as orange and black, but I was reminded that purple and green are now popular Halloween colors, too. So here's the scoop: Kids can wear any color of official St. Kieran Spirit Wear or a Halloween color (black/orange/green/ purple). Spirit Days are always $Denim day, too. This means kids can wear blue jeans or other colors of denim pants or shorts for a $1.00 donation to the Missionary Childhood Association. Our first grade missionaries will visit the classrooms to collect. Please note, this is not a free dress day, it is a themed day to build school spirit, and dress accordingly. I, for example, plan to have a giant spider in my hair... Monday is Halloween. Students may wear appropriate, light-hearted costumes to school. No weapons or anything else I will have to confiscate, Tuesday is All Saints Day! In the great tradition of Catholic schools, all students are invited to come to school dressed as a saint. On Wednesday, the eighth graders will present their Living Museum of Saints after the 9:00 Mass. As always, our families and parishioners are eagerly invited to join us in any of these activities. Sincerely in Christ, Patricia Provo, Principal
