The Epiphany of the Lord January 5, 2020

They opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

— Matthew 2:11b

Notes from Fr. John

TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading — Rise up in splendor, Jerusalem! The LORD shines upon you and the glory of the Lord appears over you (Isaiah 60:1-6). Psalm — Lord, every nation on earth will adore you (Psalm 72). Second Reading — The mystery has been made known that the Gentiles are coheirs, copartners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel (Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6). Gospel — Magi from the east arrived, saying, “Where is the newborn king of the Jews?” (Matthew 2:1-12).

T oday we celebrate the Feast of Our Lord’s Epiphany. The Christmas season continues, and this feast reminds us that Jesus’ birth is too big for one day or one people. Jesus came for all people. God loves the

entire world and the lesson of the Epiphany is that we should love all people as well. This can sometimes be a hard lesson to learn, but it is central to who we are as followers of Jesus, Christians. The magi come from different parts of the world. Traditionally they are of different ethnic groups and places. Yet all come to welcome the new king. We also are called to welcome Jesus in our family, work or school lives. So often the Christmas story reminds us that Mary and Joseph welcomed the Christ into their lives, but this is our story. We also must welcome the Christ into our own lives. We celebrate God’s love and generosity which is beyond anything we can imagine. I would like to wish everyone a Happy new year. It seems like only yesterday we were crossing into the new millennium and now we celebrate the beginning of 2020. For me the new year is a time to reflect on the gifts and blessings that God has given. For our parishes we continue to see God at work in all of you as parishioners and the staffs at both St. Agnes and St. Kieran. We take time to remember family and friends who died over the past years, but we also welcome new members to the parishes and our

families. Children are a sign of God still active in families. Children are a sign of God still active in renewing our world. On behalf of Fr. Tom, Fr. O’Mara and myself we wish you a year of blessing and peace. As we begin the new year, I wanted to give a shout out to all of those in our shawl ministry. The Shawl Ministry began so that blankets could be knitted or crocheted for those who were ill. The minis-ters pray as they knit or sent their prayers with the completed blankets. Over the years the ministry has grown. The ministry now knits baby blankets for those who are baptized in St. Agnes and St. Kieran. They make scarves for the homeless who visit the PADS shelters or Respond Now. They also connect to our veterans who have a home in Manteno. This is truly a ministry that has grown. Thanks to everyone who is a part of the Shawl Ministry and please call Kay if you want to become a shawl minister as well. Tomorrow St. Agnes school will once again be open for learning and discovery. Religious Education classes will begin on Tuesday evening. I know for many of our children they are once again ready to get back into the swing of things. And for our parents that is even more evident. We look forward to seeing all the children this week. Finally, thanks to Santa and his crew for stop-ping by St. Kieran and hosting the delicious breakfast. I told Santa he could stop by any time especially if he brings all his helpers and food! Thanks to everyone who made the Breakfast with Santa a success.
