T oday we celebrate the Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. The theme of food continues this week. In the first reading the Israelite community has been freed from Egypt and is now on the journey to the promised land.
After all the signs and miracles that they have experienced, they still grumble. They worry that they will die without food. That God is now going to forsake them. God responds to their grumbling by giving them manna to eat. Each day the manna appears like frost and provides for the needs of that day. What a way to build reliance. They couldn’t hoard or stockpile. It was all about trust. We also are called to put our trust in God’s providence. Hard to believe that we are once again in August. Just a reminder that by now everyone should already be enrolled in Religious Education classes or St. Agnes School. Waiting will only make your life more stressful and there is a chance we won’t have room for your children. Registration for both the school or RE classes have been ongoing since May. Please contact Mrs. Hamilton in the school office at 756-2333 or Mrs. Klopp in the

Congratulations to Sr. Mary Grace Richey OSF who made her Perpetual Profession of Vows this past Thursday at the Mother House in Mishawaka. Sr. Mary Grace teaches third grade at St. Agnes. Several of us were able to go to the ceremony and join her in her celebration. Please keep Sr. Mary Grace in your prayers. Two upcoming events to put in your calendar would be the St. Agnes Golf Outing on September 9th. And the St. Kieran Parish Picnic on Sunday September 16th. The Joe Dee Golf Outing will be held at Cardinal Creek Golf Course and all proceeds go to the St. Agnes School. The St. Kieran parish picnic will be held right here on the St. Kieran grounds and is a chance to get together with family and friends from the parish. We look forward to seeing you at both of these events.

WE NEED YOUR HELP WITH THE PARISH PICNIC!
We are looking for parishioners to volunteer just an hour of time to help at the St. Kieran Parish Picnic on Sunday, September 16, from 11 AM to 3 PM. Volunteers are needed for food serving, kids games, prize table, train station, and set/clean-up. The following slots are available:
11 AM to 12 PM (Noon) 12 PM to 1 PM 1 PM to 2 PM 2 PM to 3 PM If you can work the final slot and can stay to help clean up, we will greatly appreciate the help. All of the food for the picnic will be prepared by Mr. Bill Barker—volunteers will only serve.

Joshua Shlosberg served St. Kieran Parish for fifteen years, sharing his gifts as Music Minister, Lector, Minister of Care, and Eucharistic Minister.

1944 to 2018
Joshua was laid to rest on July 12, 2018, at Mepkin Abbey, the Trappist Monastery in South Carolina where he served ten years as a Brother (1992 to 2002.) It was his desire, after being diagnosed with lymphoma in October, 2017, that his ashes be interred in the Abbey cemetery, among the graves of the deceased brothers.
The Mass of Resurrection in the Abbey Church, planned and presided over by the Abbot, featured “Amazing Grace” and classical offerings by musicians on violin, cello, oboe and organ. At the conclusion of the Liturgy, the urn containing Joshua’s ashes was carried from the Church to the Monks’ Cemetery—a hillside overlooking the Cooper River. After chanted prayer and blessing, the urn was placed in the prepared site, and all present each placed a shovelful of clay into the grave as a final farewell.

Registration for 2018-2019 Religious Education classes is ongoing. Several classes have already been filled and the remainder of the classes are nearly full. Although the registration deadline is August 31, you should not wait any longer to register your children. Call the Religious Education Office at 708/754-0713 to check availa-bility. We will need some new teachers and adult aides for the upcoming year. If you think this worthwhile ministry might be for you, call Teri Klopp in the Religious Education Office. She will be happy to discuss requirements and expectations with you.

Our St. Kieran 10:00 am Mass Choir is a great group of singers! We are always looking for new members. You don’t have to know how to read music, just love to sing!
Practices are every Thursday evening from 7:00 – 8:30 pm.
Our first practice is Thursday, August 30.
Our first Mass of the year is Sunday, Sept. 9.

RESURRECTION CHOIR The St. Kieran Resurrection Choir is a special group of volunteer singers that offers comfort and support at funerals. If you would like to join this wonderful ministry, please see Joanne Rossbach or call the Rectory. There are no practices and no requirements for attendance. Members are called several days before a funeral and come to sing when they are available.

Chime Choir All are welcome to join our Chime Choir (ages junior-high and older). The chimers play about once a month at a weekend Mass and for special occasions. No musical background at all is needed. Prac-tices are every other Monday evening from 7:00 – 8:00 pm, beginning August 27. If you are interested, please talk to Joanne Rossbach or call the Rectory. A special thank you to the Knights of Columbus (Chicago Heights Chapter, Council 997) who continue to support our music ministry!
SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE AUGUST 11/12, 2018
A new academic year will soon begin for our grade school children in the greater community of Chicago Heights. Families who struggle with meeting the daily needs of their children are even further stressed when school begins and supplies, clothes, and equipment are needed. In an effort to help our families with the extra costs of supplying their children with what they need to begin the school year, we are asking our parishioners to help out by purcha-sing needed supplies for both our children AND their teachers. Needed supplies are listed below and can be brought to St. Kieran Church the weekend of August 11/12 where they will be distributed within the following week to our local community schools in District 170 and to the students at St. Agnes Catholic School, our sister parish. St. Agnes has hosted a Shawl Ministry group for a number of years. They are a small group of knit-ters and crocheters who make baby afghans for families who are baptizing, shawls for the sick or homebound and neck scarves for PADS guests. A lot of the work may be done at home, but they meet once a month for about an hour at St. Agnes, usually on the last Thursday of the month at 10 AM for a cup of coffee, company, and to pray while they work. If you’re interested in joining the group, please call Ann at 756-2635 or Kay in the parish office at St. Agnes at 709-2694. P.S. Plenty of supplies are available, so please think about coming to learn how to knit or just for the fellowship!
