United Way Donations to St. Kevin’s
Thank you to the parishioners who have chosen to support St. Kevin’s Parish by
donating through the United Way. These monies are not reflected in the Sunday
collections reported in the bulletin, as the monies come directly from United Way.
In 2018 the parish received $2,512.86 from these donations made to United Way and
as of May 2019 an additional $1945.57 had been received. Of these monies,
St. Kevin’s Parish has chosen to support several worthwhile charity organizations as
follows:
Maison McCulloch Hospice $500
Elgin Street Missions $500
Campaign Life Coalition $100
Coming Soon - Volunteer Information & Feedback Meetings
A heartfelt thank you is extended to all who generously offer their talents and time
to support the work of our various parish Ministries; your leadership, commitment,
and participation is key to nurturing faith in our parish community.
As we plan for the future, it is a good time to reflect on the past year. During the
upcoming weeks, volunteers will be invited to attend a meeting for their specific
Ministry. The goal is to provide an opportunity to share your ministry experiences
and offer any feedback / suggestions you may have relevant to your volunteer
service. The meetings will also be used as a forum to introduce volunteers to new
Diocesan policies or initiatives.
It is important to ensure that we have a safe and constructive environment for every-
one in our Parish, and your ideas and inputs are valued. We hope that you will be
able to join us for these volunteer information & feedback meetings.
A Message from Father Jackson
Friends, as you might know, foreign priests working in our diocese are here based on
a contract between the Bishop of Sault Ste. Marie, and his counterparts in another
diocese or congregation, in other parts of the world like India or Africa. These
contracts are made for a specific period of time. I come from the diocese of
Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu, India and my contract is for 9 years, which ends in April
2020. My home diocese is calling me back, and so I have to wrap up my ministry at
St. Kevin’s Parish/the diocese of Sault Ste. Marie, on Easter Sunday, April 12, 2020.
Bishop Marcel is planning to bring in the next pastor while I am still here to ensure a
seamless transition; so that I could walk him through all the works we do here at
St. Kevin’s.
It’s been an amazing experience and a joy, working for the faithful of this diocese at
various parishes for the last nine years. I am returning home with a great wealth of
Canadian values, love and friendship, which will provide an additional source of
strength for myself, in my future ministry at my home diocese in India.
Thank you so much; and kindly keep me and all your priests in your prayers.
Fr. Jackson Arul

Job Opportunity - Website Co-ordinator
St. Kevin’s Parish is seeking an individual who would be interested in maintaining
the content of our parish website. Currently the Bulletin & Parish Calendar are
updated by the parish secretary, but many of the other areas of the website do not
contain current information. The role of the website co-ordinator would be to
communicate with the various parish groups to have information submitted for
publication, reviewed by Father Jackson, and posted to the website. Training is
available for the software used by the website, and we are willing to pay the
co-ordinator for their work hours (compensation to be discussed); initially more
time will be required, but we anticipate that once the site is updated, maintaining it
will only take a few hours a month.
Applicants are invited to submit a letter of interest to the parish office, listing their
experience & applicable skills for this position. Please contact the office for more
information or speak to Father Jackson.

A Message from the Alzahran Family
Over the holidays, Laurie Jones received a message from the Alzahran family, that
they requested be passed on to the parishioners of St. Kevin’s. Their family was
sponsored by the Capreol-Valley Refugee Sponsorship group, and came to Canada
from Syria in January of 2016; St. Kevin’s parish supported the project by providing
the family with a home at Our Lady of Peace rectory for almost 3 years.
Below is the message and a short update from Laurie on how the family is doing.
“Please tell everyone at your church Merry Christmas to them all from the Alzahran
family. Please tell them they were very very nice to us and we will never forget that.
I would like to thank everybody who made my kids smile, and everybody who drove
my kids everywhere, and drove me to the mosque. It was so kind of you all. I swear
when I go to Capreol I feel at home. - Abdulhakim Alzahran “
Abdulhakim left his home, his land, his business, his relatives and his country to find
a safe place for his children. He wants you to know that he will never forget all of
you who made that possible. His children are all doing well in school and university,
and Abdul now has a full time job as a truck driver with Manitoulin Transport.
Happy New Year everyone - Laurie
Your Pop Tabs are Purchasing Wheelchairs!
It takes many, many, many pop tabs and many containers like the one
we have here at church, to purchase a $6,000 wheelchair; approximately
14 million tabs, which is nearly 9,500 pounds! To purchase a $10,000
wheelchair requires approximately 24 million tabs or 16,000 pounds.
Over the course of a year and a half, approximately 7 full containers
have been collected from pop tabs collected by St. Kevin’s parishioners.
Collection containers are all over the city of Sudbury, and many people
are collecting. Please continue to save and contribute. Simply put a jar at
one of your groups, it’s that easy. One wheelchair has already been
purchased for the Hospice.

People are like stained-glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun
is out, but when the darkness sets in, their true beauty is revealed only if
