COORDINATING PRINCIPAL’S REPORT WHERE IS GOD IN SUFFERING?

Staff recently had the opportunity to attend a twilight retreat hosted by a Jesuit Priest and theologian, Richard Leonard.

Father Leonard is the author of several books, including one entitled ‘Where the Hell is God?’ His retreat was based on this book which takes up the age-old question of God and the existence of suffering and evil.

He was moved by a terrible accident that left his lovely sister a quadriplegic. This certainly changed her life and that of her mother who has been her carer since the accident. It also prompted Richard to reflect on the hard questions that suffering raises. At the risk of doing an injustice to his wise, insightful book, I share with you the following thoughts from his talk and his book:

Our God is a God of love and does not punish us or directly send us pain, suffering, hardship

or disease;

God does not send us accidents to teach us things, though we can all learn from the

experience of life, good or bad;

God does not will earthquakes, floods, droughts or other natural disasters. He does not

change nature, however, He can change a human heart that wants to change;

Free will is the greatest gift that human beings have been given. We can use this great gift to

choose good or evil. God does not will evil. He wants us to be happy, faithful, hopeful and

loving;

God created a world that is less than perfect, else it would be heaven.

Suffering, disease and pain are realities of our world. Some of these we

create when we choose not to share our wealth equitably or try to solve

differences by war and aggression, and

Our God grieves with us when we despair and delights in our goodness

and creativity.

If you are interested in a further explanation of these thoughts, the book is available through our school libraries. It is a short easy read of 67 pages.

Mr Jim O’Brien Coordinating Principal

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Thanks to Great Examples of Leadership at the College this term. On behalf of the College community I would like to thank Mr Chris Kalchbauer for his tremendous work over the past 5 weeks as Acting Assistant Principal of the College. On occasion, Chris had the added responsibility of running the College when I was absent due to a family bereavement. Similarly, to Mr Adrian Ryan who so efficiently filled the role of Administration Coordinator and to Mrs Tanya Daley, who so seamlessly carried the role of Flinders House Coordinator during this period; a sincere thank you.

Senior Soiree A big thank you to Mrs ClaudetteStace, our Creative Arts Coordinator, for her fine leadership in this very important learning area in our College.Please see our feature on the Senior Soiree in the ‘CAPA News’ section of this newsletter. Darwin Music Tour Many thanks to the following staff who assisted Mrs Sharon Green on the Darwin Music Tour Mr Greg Hollis, Mrs Wendy Welsh, Mrs Debbie Hill and Alex Small. Recently the College received a letter from Sally Winch, Principal of Manunda Terrace Primary School, Northern Territory. I commend her letter to your reading.

Morning Sharon, and Band Members and their families, and accompanying teachers, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to you for visiting Manunda Terrace Primary School last week. The performance from your students was outstanding, and several of my staff said that it was the best performance the school has ever had!! I think the interactive nature of it, and the fact that it was ‘real’ students who were performing, provided the appeal. The quality of the performance was sensational, but the informality and inclusivity, was really the highlight. As you would know, Manunda is one of the lowest ICSEA rated schools in Darwin, and your performance was a fabulous opportunity for enjoying and engaging with all that music can offer, delivered by an amazing and talented group of young people. Again, many many thanks to the students, and adults, who performed for our school. We are very grateful to you, and would most certainly welcome you back at any time. Safe travelling, and happy music making! Sally Winch Principal Department of Education, Northern Territory Government

Congratulations to: Bailey Armstrong, Flynn Armstrong, Zac Bell-Allen, Brendan Fuller, Hannah Garven, Billy Hart, Odessa Mullin, Shannon Neville, Eloise Pepper, Jessica Prohm, Tahlia Rakete, Corben Rees, Jackson Roche, Grace Slater, Lachlan Smith, Lily Smith, Jarrod Stewart, Rebecca Turner, Katelyn Wall, Clare Walsh and Mackenzie Xerri who participated in this tour. Year 9 Canberra Excursion On behalf of our whole college community I would like to thank all staff who recently attended The Year 9 Canberra excursion. By all reports this was the best excursion to happen to date. My particular thanks to Mr Jason Warneken and Mr Richard Battiston who coordinated the trip and to the following staff members Mrs Diana Walsh, Miss Amy Chaloner, Mr Greg Hollis, Miss Hannah O’Brien, Mr Jeremy Buckley, Miss Ann-Marie Healy, Mr Kim Eichmann, Mrs Joanne Middleton, Mrs Penny McKee, Mr Mitch Robins and Ms Jackie Howard who accompanied them. Finally, I wish all members of St Joseph’s Regional College community: students, families and staff, a very safe and enjoyable break.

God Bless

Mr Jim Dempsey College Principal

NEWS FROM THE ACTING ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL This week Year 11 students received their Half Yearly report for the Preliminary Higher School Certificate Course. As with all reports these give an overview of performance as well as future directions for students. It is hoped that students use the information in the reports to set goals for themselves and have associated discussion at home to reinforce success and clarify directions for further development. Students from Year 11 were also acknowledged for their performances at the Academic Award ceremony today. It was wonderful to see so many students who are aspiring to set the highest possible standards and achieving their personal best. I congratulate all students who received an Excellence, Application and Community Service Award at the ceremony. Half Yearly Semester One reports will be distributed to Year 7 to 10 on Friday, 18th July following the Academic Award ceremonies. These ceremonies will take place in the College Hall and the times are listed below. All parents are welcome to attend any of the ceremonies.

Year 10 9.00 am

Year 9 10.00 am

Year 8 11.10 am

Year 7 1.35 pm A reminder to all parents that students will return to class at the end of the ceremonies as it is a normal school day. It is important for everyone that students begin Term 3 on the right note and in a positive manner. I remind parents that all students are to return to school in full winter uniform. It is important that each student is ready to commit to their studies meeting all expectations from day one. This week Year 9 students travelled to Canberra. These are valuable experiences as they provide students with such meaningful and fulfilling learning experiences beyond the classroom and instil confidence in individuals as they undertake new and different challenges of life. Once again I thank the teachers for their generosity and willingness to support the students in this worthwhile event.

Page 5: St Joseph's Regional College Newsletter T2, Wk9 27th June 2014

During Term 3 from Wednesday 30 July the Leadership Team at the College, will begin the interview process for Year 11, 2015. Each student who has applied for enrolment at the College will be interviewed so that greater insight may be gained into the student and the support they may need in their education. I look forward to meeting the parents and students of Year 11, 2015.

A reminder to all parents and students that Monday 14th July is a normal school day with the College Athletics Carnival being held on Tuesday 15th July. This day is a compulsory activity and I encourage all students to fully participate in our Carnival.

Throughout the past two weeks there have been a number of activities that highlight our Catholic College – the Street Retreat in Brisbane, Year 10 Reconciliation Program, Year 8 and 9 Chris Doyle Retreat, Diocesan Sporting Activities, Year 11 Senior Soiree, Year 12 Successful Transition Evening, Year 11 Mass, Year 9 Canberra Field Trip, Year 10 Dance Assessment, Year 10 Nambus and Vinnies Out of Uniform Day. These events certainly highlight our Catholic College and give us much to celebrate as a Catholic community.

As we conclude the Term, I wish to take this opportunity to thank the students, parents and staff of St. Josephs Regional College for helping to make this College the wonderful community that it is. Thank you for your support and allegiance and I feel privileged to be part of this wonderful community.

Finally I thank staff, parents and students for their support and wish everyone a safe and relaxing holiday. Mr Chris Kalchbauer Acting Assistant Principal

FROM OUR LEADER OF CATECHESIS AND EVANGELISATION

Year 11 Mass – “We are called to serve”

Year 11 participated in their annual mass on Wednesday, 25th June, reinforcing the College theme for 2014 of Witness, by answering the call to help others in the St Agnes Parish. This was in the form of some very generous donations of food items and monetary contributions to Sr Marjorie and her wonderful team of volunteers at the Soup Kitchen. The call to serve was reinforced very strongly by the students that recently attended the Street Retreat in Brisbane - Christa Morrow, Danya Gobius, Kimberly Ross, Michael Riley, Cameron Bird and Zac Parnell.

The message in their reflection reinforcing the simple things we as Witnesses of Christ can do for others was received with such positivity; which was a reflection of the atmosphere during mass. A massive thank you to Mr David Lewis (Yr 11 Pastoral Coordinator) and Mrs Helen Gilbert (Assistant Leader of Evangelisation) for their tremendous work in the preparation for the celebration for this mass. Also to Mr Andrew Blackmore for some wonderful musical accompaniment which was performed by our Year 11 music students. A big thank you to our College Chaplain Fr James Foster for celebrating this special mass with us. As a College faith community we thank Sr Marjorie for her work in the community, respectively she was sure the recipients of the very generous donations at the Soup Kitchen will be extremely thankful for the offerings made by our Year 11 students.

YEAR 8 CAMP TO SOUTH WEST ROCKS In Week 9 of Term 3 all Year 8 students will travel to South West Rocks for a 4 day camping experience from Tuesday, 9th September til Friday, 12th September. This is an important and valuable part of the Year 8 PDHPE Outdoor Recreation program. During class time, students will participate in lessons and activities that will prepare them for this excursion. The cost of the camp will be $90, which will cover transport to and from South West Rocks, camping fees, snorkeling and the use of common equipment for cooking and cleaning etc. Students will need to provide their own tents, food and sleeping equipment for the camp with breakfast and lunch being provided on the Friday. Students are encouraged to take stock of any family camping equipment over the holidays and, if needed, keep aware of local camping store sales. Should you have any questions or concerns please contact the College office.

WALKATHON – 8th August 2014

This year’s Walkathon will be held on Friday, 8th August 2014 and is a major fundraising event for the College, giving students the opportunity to raise funds for items they feel will enhance their learning and make their time at SJRC more enjoyable. In recent years money raised has purchased outdoor seating, BBQ tables and chairs, sporting and musical equipment, comfortable lounge style seating for the library, F5 Open Learning and Student Services rooms. In addition to these items $$$$ have been put aside over the past three years toward the purchase of a College mini-bus to be used for sporting, cultural and community service activities. This will in turn reduce the cost for parents.

All students are strongly encouraged to raise money and next week will be given their Sponsorship Envelope. There will be prizes for students who raise the most money in each year group, PCs that earn over $1000, the highest earning PC and all students who raise over $50 go into the draw for a $500 gift voucher at a store of their choice. Every $50 earns an extra ticket in the major prize.

Families and local business are also welcomed to sponsor with monetary donations or with suitable prizes for the students. Please contact Mrs Joanne Williams in the office if you would like to become a sponsor. Alternatively if you would like to discuss a major sponsorship of a College Mini-Bus please phone Mr Chris Kalchbauer at the College.

Thank you for encouraging your sons and daughters to seek sponsorship, in addition to completing the healthy 10km walk, as it provides opportunity to purchase items which could not otherwise be purchased for students.

Athletics Carnival- Tuesday, 15th July 2014

A warm invitation is extended to all parents and grandparents to our 2014 Athletics Carnival which will be held on Tuesday 15th July which is in week one of next term Opens Girls Soccer Diocesan Final – 24th June 2014 at Coffs Stadium

Our Opens Girls Soccer team held Trinity to a nil all draw (in the second half) of our final today. Unfortunately Trinity had already scored 4 unanswered goals in the first half. Our girls impressed as they refused to give up and fought hard till it was time to go to the service centre. The lack of training showed only in my inability to spell or pronounce players names.

Our best attacking chances came down the touchlines with Helena Right, Gabby Amen and Pamela Gibson all causing Trinity trouble. Karen Radko kept her head (away from the ball) to everyone’s relief. Lauren Cook and Maggie Caughlin were strong in the midfield. Our defence took a while to settle against a very strong side but can be proud of their efforts in the second half. Darius, Kira, Bindi, Taneesha, Tyler and Zoe were all rock solid. Tara Besseling was brave in front of goals and made some spectacular saves. Lizzie Frazer led the team well, in singing on the bus, knowing every word to every song on Star FM and most of the dance moves.

I would like to thank the girls for the spirit that they have played (and for all the driving tips). They are all outstanding ambassadors for our school. Thanks also to Taylor Kennedy for her assistance and expertise coaching.
