It is my hope we can have a lot of fun with this and make some money to lower our parish debt. I was so pleased that our own Monica Pugh wrote the following article: for our newsletter, “Catholic Mirror,” and the “Winter- set Living” magazine. It’s No Bull, It’s Father Dan’s Heifer! Old Macdonald may have had a farm. But Father Dan has his own cow! He has a cow? How did he get a cow? And why does he have a cow? Father Dan has loved cattle since an impressionable visit to his uncle’s farm as a young boy. “I had a toy farm set and I would play for hours and hours,” he says. “I learned all the cattle breeds.” In mentioning his love for cattle to some parishioners, it was suggested he get a cow for the parish. So Pat Corkrean, Jim Pottebaum, and Father Dan visited Bill Adams farm. Father Dan really wanted a Belted Galloway, but because of their temperament, he was advised against it. So a bred Black Angus heifer was chosen. This choice worked well for Father Dan since he loves the color black. Parish kids in religious education will have the opportunity to help name the heifer that is due in March or April. All parishioners will have the opportunity to guess the arrival date of the calf in a one-dollar lottery. The winning guess also wins the opportunity to name the calf. “It’s a fun thing to do for our parish,” he says. “We’re excited about our heifer.” The heifer is currently in Pat Corkrean’s pasture. In November, it will be on the auction block for St. Joseph’s annual auction. “If there’s not a white spot under her chin, they may have to paint one for the auction,” he says with a grin. I will be selling chances for our contest to predict the date of the calf ’s birth at our Super Bowl party Feb. 2 and at the parish Trivia night Feb. 8. The winner will receive $100.00 cash and the honor of naming the calf. If more than one person picks the right date we will split the winnings. Let’s have some fun!!

St. Moses

Feb. 7Died: 372

Arab hermit and bishop who is called “the Apostle of the Saracens.” He lived in the desert regions of Syria and Egypt, caring for the local nomadic tribes. When the Romans imposed peace upon the Saracens, Queen Mavia, the Saracen ruler, demanded that Moses be consecrated a bishop. He accepted against his will and maintained the peace between the Saracens and Rome. The Saracens were a nomadic people of the Syro-Egyptian desert so designated by the Romans. St. Scholastica

Feb. 10Died: 543

St. Scholastica, sister of St. Benedict, consecrated her life to God from her earliest youth. After her brother went to Monte Cassino, where he established his famous monastery, she took up her abode in the neighborhood at Plom-bariola, where she founded and governed a monastery of nuns, about five miles from that of St. Benedict, who, it appears, also directed his sister and her nuns. She visited her brother once a year, and as she was not allowed to en-ter his monastery, he went in company with some of his brethren to meet her at a house some distance away. These visits were spent in conferring together on spiritual matters. On one occasion they had passed the time as usual in prayer and pious conversation and in the evening they sat down to take their reflection. St. Scholastica begged her brother to remain until the next day. St. Benedict refused to spend the night outside his monastery. She had recourse to prayer and a furious thunderstorm burst so that neither St. Benedict nor any of his companions could return home. They spent the night in spiritual conferences. The next morning they parted to meet no more on earth. Three days later St. Scholastica died, and her holy brother beheld her soul in a vision as it ascended into heaven. He sent his brethren to bring her body to his monastery and laid it in the tomb he had prepared for himself. She died about the year 543, and St. Benedict followed her soon after. Her feast day is Feb. 10.

St. ValentineFeb. 14Patron of Love, Young People, Happy MarriagesDied: 269

Valentine was a holy priest in Rome, who, with St. Marius and his family, assisted the martyrs in the persecution under Claudius II. He was apprehended, and sent by the emperor to the prefect of Rome, who, on finding all his promises to make him renounce his faith ineffectual, commanded him to be beaten with clubs, and afterwards, to be beheaded, which was executed on Feb. 14, about the year 270. Pope Julius I is said to have built a church near Ponte Mole to his memory, which for a long time gave name to the gate now called Porta del Popolo, formerly, Porta Vale-tini. The greatest part of his relics are now in the church of St. Praxedes. His name is celebrated as that of an illus-trious martyr in the sacramentary of St. Gregory, the Roman Missal of Thomasius, in the calendar of F. Fronto and that of Allatius, in Bede, Usuard, Ado, Notker and all other martyrologies on this day. To abolish the heathens lewd

superstitious custom of boys drawing the names of girls, in honor of their goddess Februata Juno, on the fifteenth of this month, several zealous pastors substituted the names of saints in billets given on this day.

The Origin of St. Valentine The origin of St. Valentine, and how many St. Valentines there were, remains a mystery. One opinion is that he was a Roman martyred for refusing to give up his Christian faith. Other historians hold that St. Valentine was a temple priest jailed for defiance during the reign of Claudius. Whoever he was, Valentine really existed because archaeologists have unearthed a Roman catacomb and an ancient church dedicated to Saint Valentine. In 496 AD Pope Gelasius marked Feb. 14 as a celebration in honor of his martyrdom. The first representation of Saint Valentine appeared in a The Nuremberg Chronicle, a great illustrated book printed in 1493. [Additional evidence that Valentine was a real person: archaeologists have unearthed a Roman catacomb and an ancient church dedicated to Saint Valentine.] Alongside a woodcut portrait of him, text states that Valentinus was a Roman priest martyred during the reign of Claudius the Goth [Claudius II]. Since he was caught marrying Christian couples and aiding any Christians who were being persecuted under Emperor Claudius in Rome [when helping them was considered a crime], Valentinus was arrested and imprisoned. Claudius took a liking to this prisoner – until Valentinus made a strategic error: he tried to convert the Emperor – whereupon this priest was condemned to death. He was beaten with clubs and stoned; when that didn‘t do it, he was beheaded outside the Flaminian Gate [circa 269]. Saints are not supposed to rest in peace; they’re expected to keep busy: to perform miracles, to intercede. Being in jail or dead is no excuse for non-performance of the supernatural. One legend says, while awaiting his execution, Valentinus restored the sight of his jailer’s blind daughter. Another legend says, on the eve of his death, he penned a farewell note to the jailer’s daughter, signing it, “From your Valentine.” St. Valentine was a Priest, martyred in 269 at Rome and was buried on the Flaminian Way. He is the Patron Saint of affianced couples, bee keepers, engaged couples, epilepsy, fainting, greetings, happy marriages, love, lovers, plague, travelers, young people. He is represented in pictures with birds and roses.

St. Isabel of FranceFeb. 26

Sister of St. Louis and daughter of King Louis VIII of France and Blanche of Castile, she refused offers of marriage from several noble suitors to continue her life of virginity consecrated to God. She ministered to the sick and the poor, and after the death of her mother, founded the Franciscan Monastery of the Humility of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Longchamps in Paris. She lived there in austerity but never became a nun and refused to become ab-bess. She died there on Feb. 23, and her cult was approved in 1521.
