ST JOSEPH’S PARISH NEWSLETTER
Serving the people of South Taranaki in Hawera, Normanby and Manaia
28th Sunday Ordinary Time Year A
11th October 2020
Respect Life Sunday
Respect Life Sunday 2020 on 11 October invites us to value and protect vulnerable members of our families, communities, society and nation in all we do. Quoting Pope Francis, the theme reminds us: “We are all frail, all equal, all precious”. It reminds people of the value of each member of the human family. While our society sometimes shows it considers some lives to be worth more than others, we reject that idea. We are one human family and there is a special place in our family for the most vulnerable, the poor, people experiencing illness or disability, unborn lives and people rejected by society. Respect Life Sunday falls a week before the New Zealand General Election, in a year in which we face old and new questions about the way we value lives through the Covid-19 pandemic, abortion legislation and the euthanasia referendum.
Almighty God, awaken in our hearts your own love for the most vulnerable members of
our society. Recognising our own fragility and vulnerability, help us to protect all
people, from before birth to the natural end of our lives, and eliminate discrimination
and exclusion because of illness and disability. Amen

Pro Life Facts: Recently the Ministry of Health announced the establishment of their Abortion Services team, responsible for planning and oversight. Although presenting as an ordinary bureaucratic medical service, the fact is that this medical service kills preborn children. For more information on pro-life issues, visit www.voiceforlife.org PRAYERS FOR OUR LOVED ONES WHO HAVE DIED: We remember and pray for all those who have died recently, especially Kearney O’Connor & Henrica Bruynel and all whose anniversaries are at this time including Paul Dwyer, Doug
Johnson, Frank Gilligan, Jim Leslie, Margaret Crompton, Brian Hughes, Alf Kalin, Edna Dodunski, Tom Mills, Gesildo Martelletti, & Terry Bigham. Mass has been requested by SVDP for Kearney O’Connor. May they rest in peace
Next weekend our parish will be holding the Pontifical Mission (MISSIO-NZ) Church Appeal. This year we are invited to partner with the needy Church in the Philippines. They reach out to those who have been affected by poverty and disability. They give them hope and support to live a fulfilling life.
Zyrhrie Costales is a seven years old girl but weighs only 7kgs when the team of Sr Maris found her. In recent months Zyrhrie has also been diagnosed with cerebral palsy. The reach-out program of the diocese of San Jose, Nueva Ecija in the Philippines led by the Canossian Sisters and their teams worked hard to help bring integral development of mind, body, and soul of the children of the Diocese. Zyrhrie represents the many children who longs to live with top health. The Missionary Canossian Sisters and their team need your help. May your generosity be an expression of your care for those less privileged. May your gifts be an expression of your response. Give from your heart. Please use your Planned Giving Special Envelope. If you are not on planned giving, please place in an envelope marked Mission Sunday, and if you would like a receipt, please include your name and address. Te Ahi Kaa O Mātauranga The Hearth Place of Learning. Te Ahi Kaa O Mātauranga is the Palmerston North Diocese Young Adult Community. Based in the Palmerston North CBD, this is where 20-35 year olds can spend a year focusing on prayer, hospitality, formation and service. Expressions of interest are now open for 2021.
