NEWSLETTER # 10 13th June 2017
THE MOST HOLY TRINITY: Year A The love of God for the world – his love for us – is at the heart of these beautiful words spoken by Jesus to Nicodemus. The nature of that love is explained twice, as if Jesus was speaking to two different groups of people. The first four lines speak to believers, offering them the opportunity to reflect upon the basis for their belief - “God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son…”. The next three lines speak to those who are conscious of themselves as sinners, or those who are finding believing difficult – “For God sent his Son into the world not to condemn the world…” . Jesus speaks to both groups who would have been present in the crowd, those who were already believers and “in love” with God, and those who felt that their wrongdoing was a barrier to being loved by God. But Jesus addresses his words to one person, Nicodemus. At different times during his lifetime Nicodemus was likely to identify with both groups of people. We are the same – during periods of our lives we are firm in belief and our awareness of the love of God; at other times we are weighed down by our sense of our own failure, and feel that God is distant. We condemn ourselves, perhaps even projecting our self-condemnation onto God as if it was his condemnation. Jesus did not come to condemn but to save… Our understanding of this truth can be deepened enormously by taking it as a personal guideline in our dealings with others. It is so easy to condemn others, and we can be tempted to do it when we are having difficulty living with our own sense of worthlessness and low self-esteem. When we feel the urge to condemn others, our mindset can be radically changed by seeking instead to help the other person. This can be as simple as defending a person we know, or whole groups of people we don’t know, when others are condemning them. Jesus does not condemn us. When we refuse to condemn others we are following him. These actions deliberately chosen can have an effect not just on others, but on us as well, helping to free us from self-condemnation. It is the Holy Spirit who enables us to follow the Son whom the Father sent. God continues to love the world, and each one of us individually.

Principals Piece:
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
Our sincerest condolences to the Toni family for the loss of Geoff. We ask that you keep the Toni
family and all other families in our community suffering from a loss in our prayers. Thank you to our
wonderful school community for the love, support and generosity you have shown and will continue
to show.
Mid-Year reports come out this term for Yrs 4-8. We are also slowly moving away from anniversary
reporting for Yr 0-3 children. We will keep you up to date with this information. National Standards
provide an aspirational benchmark for children. We have developed a curriculum graph with reports
to inform you of where your child is at in the national curriculum levels and what their next steps are
to continue their progress. The graph for the report is not designed to go up all the time, as a
curriculum level takes at least two years to cover. So please do not be alarmed if this is the case with
your child. After the reports come out we invite you to make an appointment with your child's teacher
if you so wish. Teachers will also follow up with families if needed.
After 18 months of trial and error with school uniform providers, we now have some samples of the
proposed new uniform in the office. We have worked alongside the children to get their opinions, and
gathered information from parents a while ago, to put together some new options. There will still be
clear distinctions in uniform for our Intermediate children as well as warmth and comfort. We also
believe that NZ Uniforms based opposite Founders Theatre will provide parents with the customer
service required. It would be wonderful for you as parents to pop in and see the new proposal and
give us some feedback.
It is important that all children arrive at school for the start of the day by 8.45am. Children should not
be at school before 8am. Please be mindful that school finishes at 2.45pm and the classrooms are still
busy at these times, so please be respectful.
The requests we make for parents not to drive down the driveway have not been adhered to. It is very
dangerous with our children moving between school and church/hall. There will be a barrier placed
halfway down the drive from now on to protect our children. This does not mean you drive down
the driveway and park.
At St Joseph’s, the teachers have been working on a Learner Profile. These are the dispositions which
we want our children to leave St Joseph’s with to follow our vision and prepare them for a successful
future. This will also guide aspects of our school curriculum. These dispositions are: faithful, effective
communicators, effective self-managers, resilient, competent thinkers.
As part of our Health and Safety policies and procedures we have been making sure parents have
signed our Code of Conduct, have their licences and registration checked, and have current Police
Vetting. This will continue as we move through the year. Could I please ask that if you are wanting to
help with transport or trips, you provide the teacher in charge with the appropriate information. If
you can't, then we will not allow you to help. This is for the safety of all concerned. As of July 1st the
requirements change for Police Vetting and you will have to pay. This fee is around $10. Please make
sure if you haven't completed the Police Vetting form that you do so before July 1st.
School and home are a partnership and we want to work together for each child to reach their
potential. If there are any concerns throughout the year with your child, please contact your child's
classroom teacher first. If you are not satisfied, then you should make contact with the Team Leader. If
you are still not satisfied with things, then make a time to come in and see myself or Tracy Svendsen.
God Bless,
James Murray

YEAR 2-8 REPORTS & PARENT INTERVIEWS
As the way that we teach changes, so does the way that we share information about students learning.
Student Led Conferences and online platforms such as Seesaw and Blogger are examples of this. Also, it is
great that many parents talk to teachers regularly as the year progresses. Likewise, teachers contact
parents if they have learning concerns to discuss.
Students in Year 2-8 will bring home their mid-year report on Friday 23 June. This report will include
current achievements and next learning steps in the core curriculum areas of Reading, Writing and Maths.
It will show the curriculum level that your child is currently working at in these subjects at this mid point of
the year.
As we now have several ways of sharing information about your child’s learning, we anticipate that parent
interviews may not be needed for all students as, after reports come home, parents may feel they have
enough information about their child’s learning.
If you do want to meet with the class teacher for a parent interview to clarify any aspect of their school
report, teachers will be available on Tuesday 27th and Wednesday 28th June. Bookings for 10 minute
interviews with the classroom teacher can be made through the School Interviews website, detailed below.
Your child may be taught by other teachers for some subjects, particularly Mathematics and Reading. If the
classroom teacher is not the best person to discuss the particular subject with, please contact the relevant
teacher directly to make an appointment, either during the allocated Parent Interviews afternoons or at
another time. Your child should be able to tell you who teaches them for each subject; if not please ask
their class teacher.
Booking Information
Remember, you may want to wait to see your child’s mid-year report
to decide whether you require an interview or not.
