As I prepared for Thursday’s update on our sister parish, especially its efforts to build a school, I summarized all the messages sent via WhatsApp between Father Harold and me. Given that many of you were not able to attend, I thought it might be helpful to “paint a picture” of what has taken place since his July visit. Don’t worry, though, because I won’t use a thousand words! This won’t compare with the photos, but perhaps another time you will get to see what life is like in the parish and school. Quite amazing!

At the beginning of August, we sent money transfers for the July gifts and his mission appeal, which totaled almost $6,000. He has saved most of the mission appeal for future building needs. As August ended, we sent the gifts for the month: $994 ($331 for the regular “tithe” or 1% of our parish cluster’s income + $350 for teacher salaries + $313 in special gifts from parishioners that includes a monthly gift from the SJW Men’s Club of $100). The amount of our monthly gift varies based upon church support and special gifts received. During September Father Harold assured us that Hurricanes Irma and Maria did not cause any significant damage to St. Lucie Parish, good news indeed! Totals for the following months were: September - $928; October - $1,829 (Special gifts spurred by hurricanes?); November - $1,401; December - $1,705 (Included $200 from Women’s Club. Merry Christmas!); January - $1,610; and February - $1,161 (Includes $405, half of proceeds from Women’s Fall Brunch). Father Harold purchased drums and two microphones for parish worship using some of the special gifts.

Starting in September, there has been an ongoing conversation about building a church and/or school. Initially Father Harold was interested in building a church first, but it would cost more, $130,000; a school is estimated at $68,000. He has a classmate, now an engineer, who is willing to donate his time and that of his staff if food is provided. (Do you think we can swing a deal like that here?) The first plan was to build it in four stages, but that changed to three stages, and the first one requires $21,000; Father Harold has about $5,000 in a parish account and we have held about $10,000 for our sister parish. Our Finance Councils recommended that we wait to send any money until we see what can be raised this Lent and then try to begin the first stage, if not the first two stages. At the end of February, our Lenten project has raised about $2,000. Loyola Catholic School has chosen this project as their Lenten almsgiving, too, which will be a big help and a great way for one school to help another. You may recall that in October they had 187 students and some were turned away; Father Harold gave priority to children aged 6-14 and encouraged parents to send girls to school, too. They now have 235 students and he is doing all that he can to provide education for the children in his community. Let’s continue to pray for our sister parish, especially its hope for a school, and contribute what we can to help make their dream come true!

Sincerely in Christ,

What is the campaign goal and how long will it last? The feasibility study conducted last Fall estimated that St. Joseph the Worker has an ability to raise a minimum of $500,000 over a three-year period, above and beyond our annual giving. Our goal is to raise at least this much or more. Our faith goal is $820,000 to cover the cost of all projects.

At this time, the plan is to distribute and collect pledge cards in April. Every parishioner will be invited to volunteer for the campaign and make a three-year pledge above and beyond their regular giving.

Please pray for God’s guidance throughout this process as well as the campaign volunteers and entire St. Joseph the Worker community. This is an important moment in our church’s history and we thank you for your interest!

There is a breakdown of items/costs listed on the envelopes, but please remember ANY donation will help. Thank you!
