Pastor’s Column

Dear Parish Families,

112 years ago today, Archbishop Francis Silas Marean Chatard came down to Shelbyville to dedicate the new church building. Fr. Adelrich Kaelin was the pastor. According to his notes, talks about the new church building started in the mid-1880’s. It took a long time, but they saved up and did the unthinkable in building our church. Take a look to the right...a neat little invita-tion I found in the archives.

Today is Seminarian Tyler’s last day with us. Tyler has been an amazing addition to our parish family and has made so many deep connections and contributions here. He will be DEEPLY missed. He will also be an amazing priest. He worked HARD here. You can see evidence of that on page 10 of this bulletin!

I feel the need to say something about masks in light of the governor’s recent executive order. The Parish Council discussed and voted last Tuesday to make masks MANDATORY for the 10am Sunday Mass. Now, almost everyone is wearing a mask already, but it sounds like there are many people not coming to church on account of the fact that some people don’t wear masks and they don’t feel safe. Out of a desire to welcome folks back to Mass safely and out of respect for everyone’s health, we feel the unified wearing of masks is essential.

Like many folks, I hate masks. But I wear one and have instituted a mask rule for the office because: There’s a chance I have the virus and don’t know it.

Experts say wearing a mask protects others. We’ve lost two parishioners to the virus (early on,

back in March/April - they didn’t get it here). I don’t want to be the reason we lose anyone else.

My wearing a mask helps others feel safe and respected.

A mask can protect me from the virus. Wearing a mask isn’t that big of a sacrifice. My wearing a mask makes other people more likely

to attend Mass. I want people to have JESUS. The governor has asked for it and he is a good and

reasonable man. The countries doing the best are those that have

had more mask wearing. We won’t have to wear the dumb things forever.

It is a reasonable thing. Page 11 offers a statement about masks for all parishes in the deanery, including us. Please read it. I would like to ask this. Whether you are way PRO MASK or way ANTI MASK, let charity and love prevail. Please don’t yell at each other, or me!

Blessings and prayers, Fr. Mike

The St Vincent and St Joseph Joint Parish Picnic Committee is planning to proceed with the Annual Joint Parish Picnic on Wednesday, August 19th at 6:00pm at the Blue River Park Shelter, with some modifications to help protect from COVID-19.

We will have tables set up in the Blue River Shelter, appropriately distanced and there is plenty of space on the grassy area to have a blanket, if you choose.

It is recommended to wear a mask at the event when socializing with others. REP Registration

It is time to register your son or daughter for the Religious Education Program for the 2020-2021 school year. REP will start in September 2020.

If your child is unable to attend St. Joseph School, then he or she should definitely be enrolled in REP!

REP is for all children who do not attend St. Joseph School, preschool through eighth grade.

Freshmen in high school attend Confirmation prep at a different time.

The fee to cover textbooks and other expenses is $50 for each child, regardless of program (e.g., Con-firmation, Sunday Religious Ed, RCIC, etc.) up to a maximum of $150 per family.

Please remember that it is our DUTY as Christian parents, godparents, and grandparents, to make sure that our children are being brought up in the Catholic faith! It is a sad thing to see the faith “die out” in one’s family.

Sign up now at: http://stjoeshelby.org/rep

For more information, go to: http://stjoeshelby.org/rep

Please contact Fr. Mike or Billy should you have any questions.

News for Both Parishes Tyler’s Bookshelf

For this week’s book I am recommending The Imitation of Christ by Thomas Kempis. It is one of the most well known devotional texts in our Church, and it will meet you where you are at in your relationship with our Lord.

This book is broken into small chapters that are only a page or two long. I love this set up because I find it very beneficial in adoration. I will take it with me to adoration, look through the glossary until a chapter title jumps out at me, read the few pages, and then reflect in silence on what the Spirit may be telling me through the text.

There are tons of topics that will help you conform your life more closely to Christ. There are chapters on building up virtues in your life and resisting temp-tations. In other sections Kempis looks at different spiritualties from various religious orders, and he helps you apply pieces of these spiritualties to your own life.

Another section of the book focuses on discerning spirits and how to discover which promptings in your life are truly from God and which ones may be false goods that lead to sin. And the last section is all about the Blessed Sacrament, which I find perfect for helping us build up our love for the Eucharist, espe-cially when we are at adoration! Get the book ASAP and take it to your next holy hour! You will not regret it!

St. Joseph Parking Lot

Please do not park in front of the trash and recycle dumpsters/bins during the week.. Monday thru Friday. They are located behind St. Joseph Church on the left side near the cafeteria door.

Photos in the Bulletin!

We are making an effort to put more pictures into the bulletin! After all, a picture is worth a thousand words!

A few notes:

1) Photos look WAY better on the online version of the bulletin. They are in color there. 2) Please email photos to [email protected].

3) Next week, we will feature pictures from VBS!

Prayer Before & After Mass

Remember that it is a beautiful practice to pray before Mass and after Mass. We can tend to come in at the last moment, or sometimes even late, and leave as soon as we can. Best to offer a pious, heartfelt prayer before Mass asking Jesus to touch and transform your life. Offer another such prayer at the end of Mass, thanking God for the Eucharist.

St. Vincent News

Sr. Joan’s Corner

Dear Parishioners,

God came to earth in the form of Jesus for many reasons. One of them was to show us how to live with and love one another. This weekend’s Gospel reading is a good example of this. The Gospel be-gins with “When Jesus heard of the death of John the Baptist, he withdrew …” John was his cousin, friend and mentor. Jesus wanted to be by himself to grieve John’s death. In these days we have much to grieve. Jesus shows us how we are to do it even though at that time he didn’t get his chance.

When Jesus sees people hurting and he reaches out with compassion to heal them. We cannot heal like Jesus did, but we can relieve much suffering of others just by listening and doing what we can. In the Gospel we see the disciples coming to Jesus asking him to send the crowds away because they knew they will need food. Jesus tell the disciples, …”give them food yourselves.”

In the midst of this world, in the United States and even in Shelby County there are many, many people who go to bed hungry. It seems like an insurmounta-ble problem and I often wonder what we can do about it. Our St. Vincent de Paul Society is one way that we have tried to do our part to solve this problem.

This week as you pray, pray for those who are hungry and pray for those who are working to alleviate hunger in our world and in our county. And if you are so moved to get involved, come to a St. Vincent de Paul meeting at 6:30 p.m. on the 2nd or 4th Monday of every month. They are beginning to meet again. Jesus says, “give them food your-selves” and then he helped them do it and there were twelve baskets left over.

Outdoor Mass On Sundays

St. Vincent will continue to have 8:30am Sunday Mass outside at Mary’s statue. Remember to bring your lawn chairs, social distance and wear a mask. In Case of Rain and we have to have Mass inside and only about 50 people can safely be in church, please know that you can hear and/or see Mass in the St. Vincent’s Hall and can hear Mass in your car on the radio station 105.3. Holy Communion will be distributed at these places during communion time. You may also watch Mass livestream in your home.

Keep Your Rosary in Your Pocket

Pray to our Blessed Virgin Mary! We celebrate her intercessory power, especially as it happens through the Rosary. Please make an effort to keep a rosary in your pocket all the time.

Did you know?

Each week, we are including a fact about slavery in the bulletin as a reminder of our fundamental duty to treat all as brothers and sisters in the Lord. The Catechism teaches that “enslavement of human beings, their being bought, sold and exchanged like merchandise, [is] in disregard for their personal digni-ty. It is a sin against the dignity of persons and their fundamental rights to reduce them by violence to their productive value…” (CCC 2414).

Discriminatory business policies kept white people economically ahead. Black Codes were enacted to stop African Americans from owning their own busi-nesses. Business Licensing Fees under the Black Codes in 1870 were $0 for White entrepreneurs and $100 for Black entrepreneurs.

Thank You Seminarian Tyler!

O Jesus, Eternal High Priest, I offer You through Your Immaculate Mother Mary, Your Own Precious Blood, in all the Masses throughout the world, as petition for graces for all seminarians, Your future priests. Give them humility, meekness, prudence, and a burning zeal for souls. Fill their hearts with the gifts of the Holy

Spirit. Teach them to know and love the Church, that they may always and everywhere speak, act, and think with her, the glorious spouse of Christ. Teach them generosity and detachment from worldly goods; but

above all, teach them to know You and to love the One and Only Eternal Priest. Good Shepherd of Souls, hear this my prayer for saintly priests.

Amen.

Bulletin Advertisers Needed

Did you know that our St. Joseph and St. Vincent Bulle-tin is printed at no cost to our parishioners? We have recently switched printers and are printing it locally. We are looking for your help to offset the printing cost by purchasing an ad. We are happy to announce St. Jo-seph and St. Vincent Church’s offices are selling ads for the Bulletin. If we are able to secure enough advertis-ers, we will be able to provide the Bulletin and some-times, print it in color for special occasions at no cost to parishioners. If you would like to place an ad in our weekly Bulletin, there are 3 different sizes and prices for a six month ad: Small ad (business card size): $ 400.00 ($15.39 a wk) Quarter page ad: $ 750.00 ($28.85 a wk) 1/2 page ad: $1350.00 ($51.92 a wk)

Statement from the Batesville Deanery Regarding the Governor’s Executive Order

As you know, Governor Eric Holcomb issued an Executive Order on July 24, 2020, which requires the use of face coverings for everyone over the age of 7 in places open to the public. Since our parishes are open to the public and since social distancing cannot be completely observed inside, the priests and PLCs of the Batesville Deanery believe that the unified use of face coverings in our churches and other parish buildings is in the best interest of all. Effective July 27, everyone entering a church, adoration chapel, school build-ing, parish office, or other parish building in the Batesville Deanery should wear a face covering of some kind until the Governor changes the expected practice. Those who have medical concerns should speak with their pastor or PLC. We appreciate every-one’s assistance in following the guidelines of the Arch-bishop and the Governor.
