OUR MISSION: TO LIVE AS JESUS TEACHES
The Gospel today tells us that the Baptism of Jesus was a major turning point in his life. His public life began with his Baptism by John the Baptist in the Jordan. John preached a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. Jesus submitted himself entirely to his Father’s will: out of love he consented to this baptism of death for the remission of our sins. Through Baptism a Christian enters into the mystery of Jesus’ death and resurrection and in humble repentance offers himself/herself to God. As St. Gregory of Nazianzus spoke well of this mystery when he preached: "Let us be buried with Christ by Baptism to rise with him; let us go down with him to be raised with him; and let us rise with him to be glorified with him" (CCC 537). The greatest of gifts is ours in Baptism: God's very own mystery of life and love. A life that overcomes death from sin, a love that heals and gives joy and a life dedicated in the service of God and others. As you dip your fingers into the font and make the sign of the cross each time you enter the church, remember your baptism that reminds you of spiritual sacrifice of holiness of life and, most fully, the Eucharistic sacrifice. Thank you for making my three weeks of Christmas vacation so meaningful and joyful. I am amazed and truly grateful by your continued prayers, care, and support in my vocational journey. Thank you again for giving the op-portunity and privilege to serve and minister with you. Goodbye to rainy California and Welcome back to snowy Boston! Salamat po!
Gratefully, Greetings from India
Deacon Jimmy Dear Parishioners, I had a safe trip thanks to your prayers. I reached my home state of Kerala on December 30. Straight from the air-port I went to the hospital to see my older brother Joseph Alengadan whose open heart surgery was the next day. Being a Catholic hospital I was given special permission to see him on the eve of his surgery, and also accompany him from his room to the surgery room on the day he had the procedure. I was also by his side soon after he regained his consciousness. It was a great blessing for me to support my brother Joseph with my presence and prayers. The doc-tor himself a very good Catholic removed three blocks and now he is recuperating well. I sin-cerely thank all of you for your valuable prayers. The hospital is run by the diocese, and has many nuns who are nurses. There is also a beautiful chapel where many people pray all the time. New Year's Day I spent time with the orphans of Sneha Bhavan (Home of Love) run by the Sale-sians of Don Bosco. It was a wonderful experi-ence. The orphans are well taken care of and they are very appreciative of every token of TLC (tender loving care) I given to them. I wish you all many blessings for you and your families in 2016. Fr. George Alengadan Pastor

JUBILEE OF MERCY – WHAT CAN I DO?
On Christmas Fr. George spoke about two important actions the Diocese of Oakland is taking during this Jubilee Year of Mercy. Following is an excerpt of a letter from our Bishop Barber that offers more information. Read his letter and the steps our par-ish can take, visit the website and view the video he recommends, read the current issue of the Catholic Voice (available online at www.catholicvoiceoakland.org) and consider how you are being
called to respond. Contact Fr George or Fr Thi if you are interested in helping. “This year as we reverence the newborn Christ child in the manger, and receive Him in Holy Communion, many of our people will be asking “What can I do for the Year of Mercy?” “How can I share the Divine Mercy I have received?” “Where can I help?” Our diocesan “Year of Mercy” website has many suggestions (www.jubileeofmercy-eb.org) for practicing spiritual and corporal works of mercy, but I would like us as a Diocese to consider working together on two crucial, corporate, works of mercy: 1. Creating a Safe-House for victims of human trafficking. Many of the girls selling themselves on our streets or on the internet have no where to go – they have no route of escape. The majority of them are mi-nors. The District Attorney of Alameda County, Catholic Charities, and the Diocese are teaming up to open a Safe-House using one of our former convents. Here we will provide safe shelter, medical attention, educational possibilities, and most important: a loving and caring home. This is a ministry no other church or social agency is providing. All the local television, radio and newspapers covered our announcement. For more information, please watch this short video: https://youtu.be/MUmRtZgJiW4 2. Co-Sponsor a refugee family with Catholic Charities. Last September I was in Rome and personally heard the Holy Father ask every parish and monastery in Europe to sponsor a refugee family. Wouldn’t it be great if we become the first Diocese in the USA where every parish co-sponsored a refugee family? I say “co-sponsor” because it’s hard for a parish to sponsor a family all by yourself, but together we can combine to spon-sor a number of families. Catholic Charities has long experience. Whatever your parish is able to provide: whether it’s furnishing a small apartment, providing clothes, cooking a meal, meeting the family at the airport, providing rent, etc. will be welcomed and be considered “co-sponsorship”. CCEB already sponsors over 200 refugees a year in the East Bay, in full cooperation with the U.S. Department of State. In my Christmas Eve homily at the Cathedral I will be inviting every parish in our diocese to co-sponsor a refu-gee family together with Catholic Charities. Let’s do this together in the same spirit in which we would wel-come Mary and Joseph as they looked for a place at the Inn. If we would welcome the Holy Family to our par-ish and provide a place where Mary could give birth to the Christ child, shouldn’t we do the same in the name of Jesus to those who come to us for help? “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me.” (Matt 25:35).”
