Dear Parents, Guardians, Families, Students and Members of our College Community.
This week Cunningham Block has been a hive of activity with our annual Book Fair. It
would be accurate to say that the post-Christmas sales in Perth have nothing on the
large number of families who were in attendance purchasing a book or two for their
children. In this technological world of the twenty first century it is heartening to see
how much excitement and enjoyment books still bring to children. The presence of
Clifford the dog at the Junior School Assembly and around the playground also
brought a great deal of joy particularly to our younger students. The Book Fair has
been an enormous success and this is due to the tireless efforts of a group of parents
who generously donated their time and effort. Thank you: Maria Jackson, Sharelle
Ball, Donna Thomas, Andrea Wiseman, Kylie Leusciatti, Sam Loveridge, Helen
Anderson and Amanda Thompson. The students and staff really appreciate your
efforts. Our school is also very grateful to the many families who purchased books.
The funds raised from this event will be used to buy additional resources for our
literacy programme.
The College Uniform Committee was re-activated during the week to consider the
proposal of navy pants being included as part of the uniform for secondary girls. This
committee consisted of students, parents and staff. The outcome of the meeting was
that navy pants will be an optional uniform item for all girls from Year One to Year
Twelve. The College skirt/pinafore will still be the official uniform for all girls and the
pants are not instead of this item. Over the coming week Mrs Anderson will obtain a
sizing kit and parents and female students will be provided with details regarding
fitting times and the placement of orders. The cost of the pants, approximately
$35.00, will need to be paid at the time of ordering. Thank you: Meg Lynch (Year
Twelve), Amelia Theodore (Year Ten), Mrs Mielens (Head of Junior School), Mrs
Palmer (Secondary Pastoral Care), Mrs Anderson (Uniform Shop Coordinator), Ms

Mulcahy (Parent) and Mrs McLean (Parent) for arriving at a decision that will see all girls a
lot warmer and comfortable during the day.
The students in Years Seven and Eight are keen to have a bush/adventure playground that
they can use during recess and lunchtime. A committee is being established to develop a
concept plan and costing for such a proposal. The committee needs the involvement of
parents to help turn the plan into reality. Parents in Years Seven and Eight who are
interested in being involved in this project are asked to contact me.
This Saturday night (28 May) is the Sacramental Commitment Mass for students receiving
the Sacrament of First Communion in June. The Mass commences at 6.00 pm in the Holy
Family Church. I look forward to seeing all our students and parents at this important
liturgy.
Applications are arriving at a steady pace for families seeking a position for their child at
St Joseph’s College for 2017. Some classes are almost at capacity for next year so please
ensure applications have been lodged for siblings.
Wishing all in our community a safe and rewarding week!

St Vincent de Paul Annual Winter Appeal Continues
Frederic Ozanam, patron of Ozanam House, assisted the poor and disadvantaged through
the charitable organisation he founded in 1833: the St Vincent de Paul Society. Ozanam
House honours this linkage through a Liturgy and supporting the Society’s annual Winter
Appeal. Here is how you can ‘share the love and share the load’ this winter through
donations of:
FOOD ITEMS: canned food (including mini meals like steak and onions or chunky beef
stew), tinned tuna or sardines, tinned fruit and cans of soup; small packs of cereal,
two-minute noodles and packets of soup;
CLOTHING: warm socks for children and adults;
BEDDING: clean used or new pillows and pillow slips; blankets, warm wraps, sleeping
bags;
MONEY: donations of money are very welcome and may be handed in during Home
Room gatherings.

Book Fair Scholastic Book Fair is done for another year and what a fabulous Book Fair it was! The chaos started last Friday, with our merry band of helpers setting up the fair and the children getting a chance to browse through the books. We were also lucky enough to have a visit from Clifford the dog. He came to the Junior School Assembly and helped to give away 20 x $5 vouchers to spend at the Fair. It was very exciting - and very noisy!

Book Fair
We had another very successful Book Fair. Special thanks goes to Mrs Amanda Thompson
and her group of hard working mums for the amazing effort they made in ensuring this
year’s event went off without a hitch. We were very fortunate to have a visit from Clifford
the dog and the students enjoyed his presence at last week’s assembly.
Calendar Changes
Unfortunately, due to calendar clashes at one of the schools involved in the Inter School
Cross Country Carnival we have had to change the date. Please be advised that this event
will now take place on Thursday 30 June (Week 10) at Great Southern Grammar. The Inter
School team will be announced shortly after our own carnival which takes place on Friday

College Notices P & F Cont…
On Monday our fair opened to a fabulous response! Clifford and his happy helpers greeted our students as they arrived at school, (and they were there each morning saying hello) and there was an excitable buzz about the place! We broke all previous sales records on Monday, which we found very motivating and were out to set records all round then - which we did! I don't have the final figures yet, but I can tell you that we will have an awesome amount in credit vouchers to spend, putting new resources into our children's classrooms. A huge thank you to Clifford and his helpers. You did an amazing job and I hope you will all be back next year to help us again. To our happy mums, who gave their time tirelessly - things like this could not happen without you. Maria, Sharelle, Donna, Andrea, Kylie, Sam and Helen - thank you so much, you are very much appreciated with all that you do. To our fabulous Groundsmen - you do such a great job and nothing is ever too much trouble for you. Thank you so much. And to all our students and their parents, grandparents and caregivers, thank you so much for supporting our Book Fair. The students were on their best behaviour and the thanks and support that we are given from everyone makes everything so worthwhile. Thank you to all of you for making the Fair so successful! Streetsense Peformance
On Monday the Junior School were fortunate enough
to have the “Streetsense,” performance visit them.
The performance was the first in the new Matheu
undercover area and from the moment the
performance started, everyone knew they were in
for a treat.
Linda, ‘Streetsense’s’ solo performer, from the
opening number delivered the message of road
safety and good habits to get into safety wise either
at home or out and about. The older students may
have thought that they had heard this message
before but Linda mesmerised them with her juggling
and balancing skills which everybody was left in awe
by. Audience participation was also very popular with a certain male staff member wearing
a bike helmet not of his preferred colour without knowing it.
The Junior School Staff and students would like to thank Linda for visiting the College and
entertaining us with her informative show and amazing skills.
Mt Barker Lions Club
Last Year the College purchased the train carriages from the Mount Barker Lions Club. In
March of this year the College lent the train carriages to the Porongorup Wine Festival for
the weekend, as the event was held in the Mount Barker district. The College made a small
donation to the Mount Barker Lions Club in recognition of the many community projects it
supports in that district. St Joseph’s College has many students from this district whose
families will benefit from the work of the Mount Barker Lions Club.

Year Ten Outdoor Education Expedition Report
After fourteen weeks of undertaking an Outdoor Education elective, learning first aid,
minimum impact techniques, equipment, clothing and food selection, menu planning for the
wilderness, and cooking lessons with trangias (camp stoves), students were ready to test
their new found skills on an overnight hike.
Students had prepared logbooks which were used to select clothing, equipment and food as
well as pack their rucksacks, so when they turned up to school they were (hopefully) ready
for the experience.
The weather forecast was somewhat ordinary to say the least (you can always tell when an
Outdoor Education expedition is coming up on the calendar), but considering this, spirits
were incredibly high. Fortunately, most students seemed to have prepared their gear well
for the wet and windy conditions forecast.

Chaplain’s Corner Fr. Christian Saminal, OSJ This coming Sunday is the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi). It is a great celebration for our Church because it gives us an opportunity to receive Jesus with His own body and blood. But, why do we eat Jesus' Body and drink His Blood? People always fall short, even Moses fell short! In the olden times, when people sinned and

After driving to Shelley Beach, we headed upwards to the lookout for a great view over
Shelley Beach and out to the West Cape Howe cliffs. Once the team located the trail, we
were off on the Bibbulmun Track for the commencement of the 26 kilometre hike.
After some superb views over our pristine coastline in perfect sunshine, a welcome
break was had at Torbay Hut, with weight from the packs being transferred into hungry
student bodies, and then it was off to Cosy Corner for the lunch break.
Continuing along the beach after lunch, we detoured
along a trail behind the dunes after Perkins Beach due to
abnormally high tides making beach conditions
somewhat tricky. Dropping back down on to the beach
after the Perkins Beach rocks, we continued on to Torbay
Inlet Campsite. Here we found the atrocious weekend
weather had caused some inlet overflow in to our camping area, and the updated
overnight forecast was for gale force winds and heavy rain so we returned to the College
for a camp out in the gym. Everything was as per normal camping…except for a lack of
tents and long-drop toilets (much to the relief of several in the group!).
After breakfast on Day Two which varied between fried eggs and bacon, noodles, cereal
and “pancakes”, students were ready to take off for the return bus ride out to Mutton
Bird to complete the final 12km leg to Sandpatch. (Students had a slight let off as again
the beach section was eliminated).
The on and off rain ensured that students finally got to really have their raincoats tested
and the usually amazing views were unfortunately obscured for most of the day.
Considering this, students continued on in good spirits and made it to Sandpatch in
exceptionally quick time.
Smiles all around. Hopefully, having dealt with some discomfort, pushing through the
aches and pains with determination and a sense of humour, is something they will look
back on and treasure, somewhere down the track. Well done team! A special thank
you to Mr O’Donnell for his support during the expedition.

messed up, they hurt their relationship with God. However, God wanted to forgive His people, and to show that they were sorry; they had to make their own sacrifices. So, each time they fell short, they would make sacrifices as their "time out." Greatly, because of the unconditional love of Jesus, He changed this blood sacrifice when He died on the cross. He became the ultimate sacrifice and we remember that He died to forgive our sins. He was the final sacrifice, so we don't make blood sacrifices any longer. We relive Jesus' sacrifice in each celebration of the Mass. At this point, let me share with you the thoughts of St. Thomas Aquinas, as he said: “Since it was the will of God’s only begotten Son that men should share in his divinity, he assumed our nature in order that by becoming man he might make men gods. Moreover, when he took flesh he dedicated the whole of its substance to our salvation. He offered his body to God the Father on the altar of the cross as a sacrifice for our reconciliation. He shed his blood for our ransom and purification, so that we might be redeemed from our wretched state of bondage and cleansed from all sin. But to ensure that the memory of so great a gift would abide with us forever, he left his body as food and his blood as drink for the faithful to consume in the form of bread and wine… Christ himself, the true God, is set before us as our food. What could be more wonderful that this? No other sacrament has greater healing power; through it sins are purged away, virtues are increased, and the soul is enriched with an abundance of every spiritual gift. It is offered in the Church for the living and the dead, so that what was instituted for the salvation of all may be for the benefit of all.”
