PASTOR’S CORNER Last week’s second reading from the Letter of St. James offers great insight on how to promote peace in our world and overcome disorder. He reminds us that “the wisdom from above is first of all pure, then peaceable, gentle, compliant, full of mercy and good fruits, without inconstancy or insincerity.” Right now Pope Francis is receiving a very warm and heartfelt welcome to the USA as people of all backgrounds gather and hunger for the message of peace which he brings as a pastoral leader of our world. A reflection offered by Pope Francis entitled Do We Just Tend Our Own Vegetable Patch offers us wisdom and encouragement:

“Is self-interested love pleasing to Jesus? No, it is not, because love should be freely given, like his is. What are the relationships like in our parishes, in our communities? Do we treat each other like brothers and sisters, or do we judge one another? Do we speak evil of one another? Do we just tend our own vegetable patch? These are the questions of charity!”

God bless our Pope Francis and all of us with God’s wisdom from above! —Fr. Ed Stafford

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION At first glance, the situation of the penitents in the early church is shocking: isolated and labeled, their journey back to fellowship at the Lord’s table seems arduous and even cruel. However, at no time in the process were the penitents lacking the support of the community. Penances were performed for all to see, and we can tell from the homilies of the day that people earnestly desired to see the sinner benefit from the remedy. Tertullian reminded the penitents that they were living among their brothers and sisters, fellow servants of the same Lord, still in the embrace of the Spirit. He tells them that when they extend their hands in blessing to the faithful, it is Christ they touch. He tells them that when they see tears in the eyes of believers, it is Christ who is interceding for them with the Father. There is a treasure of our tradition woven into this history: these people knew profoundly that the prayer of Christ’s body, the church, was the prayer of Christ himself. Prayer was not merely support for a person down on his or her luck; it was effective and necessary. The treasure we can see even through the tangles of history is this: the Spirit of God is poured out on the church, and brings grace, forgives sin, makes us holy, and always calls us to fullness of life.

APPALACHIAN EXPERIENCE ~ June 13-20, 2015 Aaron Hluch, Bill Bash, Bill Curtin, Chris Rector, Dan & Seán Fejes, Ezra Bard, Hannah Mann, Mike Shilling, Nathan Bell, and Vince Festa made up the 11 participants. This year St. Joe’s volunteers had two main jobs and multiple small ones. One of the groups’ jobs consisted of both “gooping” roofs and sealing decks for a few participating families. A white substance was able to be painted in a few layers on top roofs to seal them from water leakage. The cost is much lower than replacing the roof and it still does a really good job. On a few of these same sites participants sealed decks and porches with the Appalachian Experience’s classic honey gold stain. The dirtiest job was probably the renovation of a house’s back room and plumbing system. The group

at that house had to completely rebuild the room’s floor, refortify that room’s back wall, place protective paneling on the lower side of the back of the house, and fix the leaky, backed-up plumbing. At these sites, volunteers were either taking preventative measures or ensuring the homes’ longevity and durability. The last job was actually many jobs. The group started with repairing a bathroom

then once that was done moved to the gutters of another house. After that the group moved to a porch to stain it. Lastly, they washed a porch and then started to stain it, but it started to rain so that pretty much concluded the week.

Throughout the week there were a number of activities in the evenings so that the group could get the full experience of the Appalachian area in and around Clintwood, Virginia. The group talked with a coal miner, went to Breaks Interstate Park, drove to Birch Knob at the top of a mountain, went to Fourth World Movement, a non-profit organization, and much more. The experience was a huge part of the trip and the group learned a lot. The group had a good time this year and will enjoy this trip for years to come.

For more information about next year’s experience, June 18-25, 2016, please contact Dan & Seán Fejes (330-274-2481 or [email protected]). Look for complete details including history, fundraising efforts, links, photos, and more on our parish website (look for Appalachian Experience

BLESSING OF PETS Saturday, October 3

10:00 a.m. in the Pavilion

Bring your pets for this special blessing in honor of our patron saint of animals.

POPE FRANCIS’ NEW ENCYCLICAL On Pentecost, 2015, Pope Francis issued his encyclical letter on Earth, our common home. In his opening paragraphs the Pope cites St. Francis of Assisi who called the earth our Sister. “Praised be to you, my Lord, through our Sister, Mother Earth, who sustains and governs us…”The Pope writes, “This sister now cries out to us…” In six chapters the Pope explains the predicament of our Earth: what is happening, how we got there, and what must be done. We’d like to form a study group to read, reflect, and act upon this important teaching from our Holy Father. Please contact the Parish Office by October 4 (Feast of St. Francis of Assisi) if you are interested in participating.

THE PRESENCE OF GOD In all our thoughts and actions we ought to remember the presence of God, and account all lost in which we think not of God.

—St. Bernard of Clairvaux

The Catholic Parishes of Portage County are once again sponsoring a monthly Dinner & Doctrine series for Catholics of the area to be held at The Aurora Inn (30 Shawnee Trl.). The evenings include a buffet dinner beginning at 6:00 p.m. (with a cash bar) followed by a guest

speaker, 7:00-8:00 p.m. The first presentation will be Tuesday, October 13, featuring Fr. James Daprile, Pastor of OLPH in Aurora. His topic for the evening will be “Beautiful Crucifixions: Disillusion or Deliverance?”. Tickets are $25.00 per person and advanced reservations are required by Monday, October 5, with your ticket purchase through Parish Office (330-274-2253).

COMMUNION PROCEDURE NOTE We will discontinue the use of bread for consecration that has been made by parishioners, effective the end of this month. We will use the hosts made available through our religious article suppliers. The homemade bread is somewhat cumbersome as particles and residue are often a problem. It is not possible to reserve those consecrated hosts if there are any remaining after distribution. Also, it has been expressed by some persons that they have trouble swallowing this type of host. — Fr. Ed Stafford
