Dear friends in Christ,
Today in the Gospel we hear one of the accounts of an appearance of the Risen Lord to His disciples. As they were making their way from Jerusalem to Emmaus, they were discussing along the way all that had tak-en place in recent days, that is, that Jesus suffered and died on the Cross but also the promising news that He is alive. Given the uncertainty that they were experiencing, it is not surprising that they were over-joyed as they came to recognize that it was the Risen Lord who was accompanying them along their jour-ney.
It goes without saying that many people do not know what to think given the present uncertainty in light of the pandemic. Yet the Gospel today assures of that even though we may be tempted to lose hope, we ought never be afraid for God is faithful to His promises. Jesus is truly Risen and remains with us by His Spirit that He has given us.
As you have been walking or driving by Saint Joseph Church you undoubtedly have seen the two sets of sequential roadside signs that have gone up alongside Maryland and Meramec Avenues and made possible by an anonymous donor. If you haven’t seen them, I respectfully draw your attention to what is written on them:
Have no anxiety- The peace of God will guard your hearts (Philippians 4:6-7)
Pray without ceasing (Thessalonians 5:16)
Be still- And know that I am God (Psalm 46:11) Be faithful in prayer (Romans 12:12)
God is with us even through the most difficult times of our lives. Indeed, the Scriptures tell us not to be anxious but to trust in Him. We are called to listen to Him in our hearts by committing ourselves to pray-er so that we can personally experience His love for us. May the Risen Lord bless us all, especially those who are suffering at the present time, and may He give us all His deep and abiding peace.
In Christ,
Father Bené
St. Catherine of Siena Imagine the pope receiving a young woman still in her twenties who ad-dresses him as “my sweet Christ on earth,” then orders: “Get back to Rome where you belong!” Amazingly, Gregory XI complied! Yet this was but one astonishing incident in the extraordinary life of Catherine of Si-ena, a truly unique medieval woman. Youngest of twenty-five children, Catherine refused marriage and became a Dominican Tertiary at sixteen, cloistering herself at home in contemplative prayer, austere penances, and mystical experiences, culminating in “spiritual espousal” to Christ. Then, incarnating the Dominican ideal of “passing on to others the fruits of contemplation,” Catherine left her solitude to care for the poor, nurse the sick, comfort the dying, and bury the dead. Increasingly re-nowned for converting souls and healing bodies, she was sought after to broker peace during civil wars and Church schisms. All this, and like Jesus, whom she called “my Divine Spouse,” she died at thirty-three! Four hundred letters and her spiritual classic The Dialogue inspired Paul VI to name her, together with Teresa of Ávila, the first women Doctors of the Church. ~Peter Scagnelli, © J. S. Paluch Co.

"In a world where there is so much noise, so much bewilderment, there is a need for silent adoration of Jesus concealed in the Host. Be assiduous in the prayer of adoration and teach it to the faithful. It is a source of comfort and light, particularly to those who are suffering." ~Pope Benedict XVI

What can we do for you?
We all know that this is a try-ing time for us all and that many people are in need of a little extra help. PLEASE let us know if there is anything we can do for you, big or small. It can be hard to ask, but we’ve had many parishioners offer help and after all, we are family! So give us a call at 314-726-1221 or send us an email at [email protected] and we will try and con-nect you to someone who can help out
Thank You Thanks to all who have been a ‘silent partner’ in some of the areas for the clean up of the grounds and for some dona-tions of plants that we have received. AND thanks for all the offers to help. Right now, because of the virus, we are
not having a spring cleanup. I may need help later once the stay at home is lifted. But thanks for be-ing such a wonderful community!
Continued Need for Food
Thank you so much to all parish-ioners who have donated food to the St. Vincent de Paul pantry. Everyone has been so generous and it is greatly appreciated.
We are taking the food to those parishes with the greatest need and they are so grateful. Food was delivered this week to St. Augus-tine, St. Bridget and Blessed Teresa parishes.
The need continues and we hope you will donate more food so we can help people who are desper-ate for food.
Thank you again for your generosity and God Bless!
Parish Online Rosary Want to join your fellow parishioners in praying the rosary even if we can't be together in person? We will be hosting a weekly Zoom rosary on Wednesdays at 7pm.
Let us know you are interested by sending an email to [email protected] and we will get you the link. If you are in-terested, but that time doesn't work, please let us know as well, we might expand or alternate times in the future if it goes well!
Blood Drive
Like a lot of life’s most pre-cious resources, blood is perishable. We can’t stock-pile it. You may make the difference between life and death for a patient in your community – and it only takes about an hour of your time!
We are hosting a blood drive on May 27 from 3pm to 7pm in the Parish Hall. To sign up, go to rcblood.org/appt and enter our sponsor code, sjc-church, in the box or call 1-800-RED CROSS.
