Holy Family December 27, 2020
Let us imitate the Holy Family in our Chris-tian families, and our family will be a cell and a prefiguration of the heavenly family. Say a prayer dedicating your family to the Holy Family. Also pray for all families and for our country to uphold the sanctity of the mar-riage bond which is under attack.

HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY AND JOSEPH DECEMBER 27, 2020
I always like the feast of the Holy Family- snuggled in neatly between Christmas and the Solemnity of Mary. As a father, however, this feast does make me feel a bit sad each year for Joseph. He is so essential to the salvation story, yet hardly even gets mentioned in the Gospel and is never quoted. You could say he flew under the radar of the gospel writers, if, of course, radar technology even existed two thousand years ago. He earned his halo just by quietly doing what God asked him to do.
In today’s gospel from Luke, we know the story is about Jesus, Mary and Joseph, yet Joseph’s name isn’t even mentioned. The word “parents” is used twice and
“father” once, but nary a “Joseph.” And it’s too bad because he had to be hurt when Simeon addressed Mary directly and not the both of them about Jesus’ future. While it certainly wounded Mary to hear that “you yourself a sword shall pierce,” (a reference to the pain she would suffer during Jesus’ ministry) it had to be a gut-wrenching blow to Joseph to know he wouldn’t be able to shield either his wife or son from suffering. Luke notes a couple times how Mary would hold these things “in her heart.” Josephundoubtedly did so as well.
Joseph is just a wonderful example not only for fathers, but for everyone, of doing God’s will. In Matthew’s infancy narrative, for example, Joseph is given directions in a dream three times from an “angel of the Lord.” And three times he followed God’s
instructions. He took his family to Egypt (an historical enemy of Israel) to avoid Herod’s slaughter of the Innocents. In another dream he was told to lead them back to Israel and in a third, to add another eighty miles to his journey home to settle in Nazareth instead of his birthplace, Bethlehem.
After that, all he had to do was live out his life with two people who never sinned. He earned his halo by being a hero. Thank you Pope Francis for proclaiming this upcoming year as the Year of St.Joseph.

Fr. Mike will be scheduling visits on Thursday Afternoons
Been cooped up for a while and can’t get out to go to Mass or confession? Good News! Fr . Mike will begin making home visits to the home-bound and elderly of our parish. The purpose of the visits will be to hear the per-son’s confession, distribute communion and celebrate the Sacrament of the Sick with those who wish to receive that Sacrament. Thursday afternoons have been reserved on Fr. Mike’s calendar for this purpose but you can make arrangements for him to visit you anytime. To schedule a visit from Fr. Mike please call the parish office. To schedule a visit for someone else you must be a family member. Please indicate if that person is able to receive the Eu-charist and have been informed not to eat immediately prior to Fr. Mike’s visit. Otherwise, Fr. Mike will not bring Communion with him when he visits.

I’m sure most of you are not only concerned about catching the Coronavirus, but also worried abut what you’ve heard about the vaccines being produced to fight it. There is a history in our country of culturing and testing vaccines with fetal cells from aborted babies (i.e. chicken pox and rubella).
Several companies have completed their work on a coronavirus vaccine, Pfizer (with Biontech), Moderna and Oxford, just to name a few. Pfizer/Biontech and Moderna have created two different vaccines that DID NOT use fetal cells/tissue. They are developed using a synthetic molecule made in a lab. It is referred to as an “mRNA” (messenger RNA) vaccine, which is developed from the genetic code of the virus itself. The vaccine produced by Oxford DID use fetal cells.

HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY AND JOSEPH DECEMBER 27, 2020
Greeting
We pray the Sign of the Cross. The priest welcomes us. Penitential Rite
We remember our sins and ask God for mercy. Gloria
An ancient song praising God dating back to the 6th century Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, only begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, re-ceive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen Collect (Opening Prayer)
All of our prayers are “collected” into one, when the priest prays the opening prayer LITURGY OF THE WORD
First Reading (GN 15:1-6; 21:1-3) The word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision, saying: “Fear not, Abram! I am your shield; I will make your reward very great.” But Abram said, “O Lord GOD, what good will your gifts be, if I keep on being child-less and have as my heir the steward of my house, Eliezer?” Abram continued, “See, you have given me no offspring, and so one of my serv-ants will be my heir.” Then the word of the LORD came to him: “No, that one shall not be your heir; your own issue shall be your heir.” The Lord took Abram outside and said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars, if you can. Just so,” he added, “shall your descendants be.” Abram put his faith in the LORD, who credited it to him as an act of righteousness. The LORD took note of Sarah as he had
said he would; he did for her as he had promised. Sarah became pregnant and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time that God had stated. Abraham gave the name Isaac to this son of his whom Sarah bore him. Responsorial Psalm (PS 105:1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 8-9) The Lord remembers his covenant for ever.
Second Reading (HEB 11:8, 11-12, 17-19) Brothers and sisters: By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance; he went out, not knowing where he was to go. By faith he received power to generate, even though he was past the normal age --and Sarah herself was sterile-- for he thought that the one who had made the promise was trustworthy. So it was that there came forth from one man, himself as good as dead, descend-ants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sands on the sea-shore. By faith Abraham, when put to the test, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was ready to offer his only son, of whom it was said, “Through Isaac descendants shall bear your name.” He reasoned that God was able to raise even from the dead, and he received Isaac back as a symbol. Gospel Reading (LK 2:22-40)
When the days were completed for their purification according to the law of Mo-ses, They took him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, just as it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that opens the womb shall be consecrated to the Lord, and to offer the sacrifice of a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons, in accordance with the dictate in the law of the Lord. Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. This man was righteous and devout, awaiting the con-solation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Christ of the Lord. He came in the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to perform the custom of the law in regard to him, He took him into his arms and blessed God, saying: “Now, Master, you may let your servant
go in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared in sight of all the peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel.” The child’s father and mother were amazed at what was said about him; and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his moth-er, “Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be contradicted —and you yourself a sword will pierce— so that the thoughts of many hearts may be re-vealed.” There was also a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived seven years with her husband after her marriage, and then as a widow until she was eighty-four. She never left the temple, but worshiped night and day with fasting and prayer. And coming forward at that very time, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were awaiting the redemption of Jerusalem. When they had fulfilled all the prescriptions of the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. The child grew and became strong, filled with wis-dom; and the favor of God was upon him. Profession of Faith (Creed)
I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, con-substantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heav-en, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in ac-cordance with the Scriptures. He ascend-ed into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I be-lieve in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has

spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrec-tion of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.Prayer of the Faithful or GeneralIntercessions
A collection of short prayers of petition. After each petition is said the congrega-tion will respond by saying, "Lord, hear our prayer.” We pray for the Church, Her leadership, the World and it’s leadership and then we pray for our parish and local needs.LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST
The Liturgy of the Eucharist, along with communion, is the most sacred part of the Mass. Catholics will kneel during the Eucharistic prayer, but non-Catholics may remain seated.Presentation of the Gifts and Preparation of
the Gifts
The bread and wine are brought to the altar along with any monetary offerings for the poor that may have been collect-ed from the congregation. These offer-ings as well as the bread and wine (our “first fruits”) represent the offering of ourselves (our lives) to God. Preface and Sanctus
After the Preface prayer is prayed we all join in the song of praise being sung by the saints and angels as they gather around God’s thrown in heaven. Sanctus Holy, holy, holy Lord God of hosts. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.Eucharistic Prayer
At this time the congregation will kneel.Pater Noster (Our Father or Lord’s Pray-er) Our Father who art in heaven, hal-
lowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heav-en. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the Kingdom, and the Power and the glory forever, Amen Fraction Rite — Agnus Dei (Lamb of God) Communion Rite (and Prayer for Spiritual Communion)
Act of Spiritual Communion (for those worshiping at home) My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritu-ally into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.
