I am a practicing Roman Catholic who thinks that perhaps m any of the sain tssuffered from a well developed form of mas ochism ! I agree on MOST of thepoints but wish to point out that number 8 and number 12 are ones that Icompletely disagree with com pletely BECAUSE of four reasons : 1. Too manyCatholic saints have openly preached or were quoted as we were as lowly asworms!. If I am created in the im age and likenes s of God (The Old and NewTestament) and if I am a s on/daughter of God I refuse to use reverse pridewhich this false hum ility IS IN REALITY! 2. Self-Esteem does NOT come fromtodays psychology movements but what God the Father said aboutman/woman made in his image! 3. Common Sense, so sorely lacking inmany fields of todayeven in religious teachings!! 4. And how manyconversations do YOU know between two or MORE people dont EVER useor refer to the I or ME . You are right that humility does not mean you have to denigrateyourself, but neither does it mean you have to prais e yourself. Thepoint is to truly get to the place where you have died to the s elf andnone of that stuff matters. If you think this list is hard, check outCardinal Merry de Vals Litany of Humility, or St. Benedicts Rule onHumility. They are more extreme even than this list. The goal of humility is death to the self and if you are guilty of #12 (which I mostass uredly am) then you are experiencing the oppos ite of humility,which is pride.

who has made m e in His image and likeness and who gives m e His giftsand grace to do His will and His work. Not to acknowledge Gods goodness ,mercy and love is pride.

I also agree that hearing praise with satisfaction is not always a lack of humility. I think it takes s ocial grace to accept a com pliment graciousl y andshows maturity.

And everyone needs to be told once in a whi le that they have done a good jo b,or are a ttractive.

You know, its not that is bad if the love of your life calls you beautiful andyou feel happy, but it is a bad thing if we are l ooking constantly for other peoples prais es. We should be careful to not become too fond of thosekind of words, because the world not always congratulates the goodthings we do. Sometimes we need to go against the public opinion for the sake of what is correct.

Signs, like little indicators. HELP us identify.. dosent say rules andregulations. Keep it in proper perspective. Im s ure the awareness isthere that we are all h uman beings , and will alwa ys be far from perfect,as a matter of fact, perfectly imperfect I think its a good guideline tokeep in mi nd in s triving to be a better more balanced pers on. Not to gotoo far above or below but to try and find an even keel with how we carryourselves and treat others. I will never master the art of humility.butif I keep workin to do just a little better then im heading in a gooddirection.

after 2 years of training to become a reader in the church of england i wastold that my vicar would not supp ort me any more she told me i had nohumility.if i wanted to continue with my course i had to s eek a new church i havetried really hard to forgive her but i cant forget the words s he s aid to m e.and now i have the opertunity to carry on with my course and after readingthe writings of St. Josemaria which can hel p us identify a lack of humili ty inourselves. i dont think i can carry on i feel guilty of each one of these 17signs.

I think the main point/ overarching theme in all of these, is that all good com esfrom God. As Saint Jos emaria us ed to say, God is the painter and we are thepaintbrushes. Knowing that all our talents, gifts etc come from God, helps usto be humble. That while we co-operate with God, all good does come fromHim.

Also he is nt talking abo ut the first reaction i.e. that a though t comes i nto our mind but more dial oguing with that thought.. The first mi ght be a tem ptationthe second is p robably a sin i f we indulge those thoughtsdwell on them,draw on other mem ories for sel f-confirmation etc etc

Also, he never said i n 5. a truth, he sa id poin t of view i.e. som ething wh erethere is a legitimate subj ectivity involved. For example, economic is sues .

Some context and knowledge of how the author writes wi ll help intepret thesepoints and I encourage you all to do so b ecause he will one day be a doctor of the Church! Just watch you read it here first :) Also remember this is atranslation from Spanis h, which sometimes can slightly alter meaning!

If a person s aid accomplis hed all that list are they then still humble? Itseem s the best approach is to recognize Christ as the hum ble one and arewe jus tified and sanctified by his grace and mercy.

Absolutel y. I dont think St Josem aria is saying that we s hould nt do exactlythat. In fact, if you go to his other writings you will see that he is very clear on

this point. However, that doesnt mean we should stop struggling to lovethough i.e. make som e personal effort to love (although we all know thatChrist does pretty much all of the work in conforming us to Hims elf)!:)

16 how ab out job interviews?Praising ourselves is not good, but if som ething is achieved it is andespecially with education it needs to be acknowledged in many situations.But yes humility is i mportant.
