"Why 'Gay Games' ?”
St. John’s, Bem
United Church Of Christ
“…no matter who you
are or where you are
on life’s journey, you
are welcome here in
the United Church
of Christ…”
“…no matter who you
are or where you are
on life’s journey,
you are welcome here
in the United Church
of Christ…”
From the Pastor’s Keyboard… “Prepare”
Joy to the World; the Lord has come! Let Earth receive her King!
Let every heart prepare him room; and Heaven and Nature sing!
Bombs explode in Paris and gunfire erupts, killing hundreds and injuring more.
Syrian refugees in need are turned away from states and countries because of fear.
Every day, 16,000 children die because of diseases/complications caused by contaminated water.
Schools are threatened by violence, causing our children to face desperate realities daily.
Long-standing racial tensions are revealed, causing wounds to be reopened and hostilities mount.
Society has become so polarized that it seems no common ground can be found.
It seems like the vision of God’s perfect Kingdom as proclaimed in the popular Christmas Carol “Joy to
the World” is very far from realization this Christmas. (We will discuss the origins of this Carol in
worship on December 13- you may be surprised at what you learn about this favorite Hymn!)
And yet, in the midst of this fractured world, Jesus is born; bringing HOPE for Salvation, LOVE in
abundance, PEACE for all mankind and JOY to the World. The potential that this child brings with his
birth is enough to bring RECONCILIATION to all of humanity; NEW LIFE to everyone who chooses to
embrace his WISDOM.
Just as Jesus brought these gifts to the first century world, renewing humanity with the essense of who
he is, today he brings the same gifts to us. Just as that first century world had the choice of turning him
away or embracing him, so do we. This Christmas (and all year long) don’t tell the Christ child that
there is “no room”; let him into your heart, and bring NEW LIFE to your old self; and then share that
NEW LIFE with this tired and fractured world. -Pastor Rick

THE UCC IN SOLIDARITY WITH PARIS from www.ucc.org
As the people of France grapple with the horror of the latest deadly terrorist attack that left 129 dead,
placing candles, flowers and messages outside a Paris cafe, one of several locations targeted by ISIS
Friday night, leadership of the United Church of Christ denounced the violence that is terrorizing
countries around the world.
"Across the United Church of Christ, we join our hearts with people of faith, conscience and good will as
we pray for those who are grieving the tragic loss of life in Paris, Beirut, Syria; and all worldwide who are
impacted by terror and violence," said the Rev. Dr. John C. Dorhauer General Minister and President.
"We pledge anew to never shirk from the call of our peaceful Creator to work for a better way, a better
future, rooted in peace, shalom, salaam for all humankind."
The Common Global Ministries Board of Directors of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the
United Church of Christ, meeting this weekend in Cleveland, condemned the terrorist attacks in Paris and
Beirut, asserting "We reject the use of religion to justify violence."
In a statement, the board said, "We will continue to be among the many voices of churches and faith-
based organizations—Christian, Muslim, Jewish, and others—that steadfastly oppose such violence, and
that detest the employment of sacred texts to justify such acts. We walk with the people of Lebanon and
France, of the Middle East and Europe, and of the entire world, accompanying them in their times of
tragedy and despair, hoping with them for release.
NEW DIRECTIONS AHEAD FOR THE MMS CONFERENCE
Relying on the Holy's Spirit's guidance and acting upon the unanimous recommendation of the
Conference Minister Search Team, the Conference Council unanimously voted to recommend to the
Conference to extend a call to the Reverend Doctor Geneva (Ginny) Brown Daniel for the position of
Conference Minister of the Missouri Mid-South Conference. On November 14, over 300 delegates from
churches all over the Conference, as well as Authorized Ministers of the Conference, affirmed this
decision by approving Dr. Daniel as our next Conference Minister.
From the official MMS Conference Press Release:
“Dr. Daniel brings sixteen years of pastoral experience in two UCC churches - the first in Maryland
and then in Houston, Texas. She served as Moderator of the South Central Conference while serving
the Houston congregation, and previously served on the Board of the Mid Atlantic Conference, and
was Moderator of their Annual Meeting. Dr. Daniel is highly sensitive to the needs of pastors, local
congregations and conference settings. She embodies a wide array of skills that we believe will serve
our Conference's future. She is an excellent preacher and writer, a skilled conflict manager, a trained
leader in stewardship, church development and growth. Ginny brings expertise in adaptive leadership,
public relations, systems theory and administration. She is warm, engaging, courageous, inclusive and
deeply spiritual. The Search Team and the Conference Council are drawn to Dr. Daniel’s clarity of
vision, her pastor's heart and her enthusiasm for the creative energies present in our Conference. For
these reasons, and many more, we believe that she is well suited to leadership at the Conference level,
and specifically to come among us as we imagine the future possibilities for the Missouri Mid-South
Conference.”
Dr. Daniel will begin her ministry with us on December 1, and will work with our current Interim
Conference Minister, Dr. Allen Fluent, until the end of the year to aid in transition. She will be working
out of the St. Louis office at Eden Seminary, and will spend much of her time on the road. We will be
inviting her to Bem Church for our fellowship events this Spring, and hope to see her soon.
Please keep Dr. Daniel and the Missouri Mid-South Conference in your prayer as we celebrate this
Pentecost moment of New Life and New Directions!

ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL IN SOFA ROOM An Adult Sunday School Class has been meeting in the Sofa Room each Sunday morning around 9:10 or
so; casual discussion about issues of faith over coffee (and sometimes donuts). Topics center on concerns
of the gathered class members, and focus on Biblical application. What does the Bible have to say to us
today, and how can we utilize this Wisdom in our lives? Come and be part of the discussion!
(In December, we will be looking at the two Creation stories in Genesis 1 and Genesis 2.
SUNDAY SCHOOL CHRISTMAS PROGRAM The Sunday School Christmas Program will be Sunday, December 20 at 6:30pm. Our Sunday School
kids will be practicing each Sunday morning during the 9:00 Sunday School hour; they will also have two
dress rehearsals on Thursday evenings (December 10 & 17). Make sure your kids are here Sundays in
December for our Christmas Program rehearsals!
2016 NURSERY SCHEDULE Tina Wnuk will be calling people in the coming weeks to coordinate a Nursery Schedule for the coming
year. Our policies call for us to have two ADULTS in the nursery each Sunday morning. Many times in
the past couple of years, Nursery Volunteers do not show up, leaving everyone else in awkward positions
as we scramble to cover their shifts. In 2016, we will see a different staffing pattern, ensuring that every
Sunday will have full coverage. Our children deserve no less than our best efforts to provide for them.

Hope Peace Joy Love
The ultimate weakness of violence is that it
is a descending spiral,
begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy.
Instead of diminishing evil, it multiplies it.
Through violence you may murder the liar,
but you cannot murder the lie, nor establish
the truth.
Through violence you may murder the
hater,
but you do not murder hate.
In fact, violence merely increases hate.
So it goes.
Returning violence for violence multiplies
violence,
adding deeper darkness to a night already
devoid of stars.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness:
only light can do that.
Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do
that.

Dear Family,
I have the best church family a girl could ask for! Thank you for sending all the goodies and especially
the mug! I really appreciate you sending this care package along with well wishes. School is difficult
and it is always nice to get a taste of home! Love, Alyssa LaValle
Dear Pastor Rick,
Thank you so much for the Care Package! It was such a good feeling to have a surprise package waiting
for me! It's just what I needed to get me through this last couple of weeks before fall break!
Love, Bre Baker
Thank you to my church family,
Thank you so much to my church family for all of the cards, meals, and prayers that you have sent while I
have been under the weather. They were all very much appreciated! Please keep me in your prayers for
continued recovery! Love, JoAnn Glaser
Dear Friends,
We are deeply grateful for your support. Because of your compassion, Families who have lost their
homes to tornadoes, floods, earthquakes and other disasters are getting help with blankets, emergency
food and shelter and with rebuilding their lives and livelihoods. People struggling against crushing
poverty and harsh climates are learning sustainable farming practices that will help them keep food on the
table and take it to market. Vulnerable children have access to clean, safe water and the nutritional food
essential to growth, development and life itself. On behalf of all the people who feel more hopeful and
less alone because of your generosity, we thank you.
Rev. John L. McCullough, CEO Church World Service
CROP WALK THANK YOU AND FINAL NUMBERS Thank you to all who participated in the 2015 CROP Walk! Our Bem Church total amount raised was
$3538; the community total was $10,778. We had over 100 participants from 9 different churches
involved. This money will be used to help relieve people in distressed situations worldwide; and 25% of
it will go to Helping Hands Food Pantry and Gerald Area Community Outreach. We are truly making a
difference, praying with our feet! Thank you especially to Glen Mercer, who helped organize the event
and was the Bem Church fundraising coordinator. Glen has always been a great champion of the CROP
Walk. Thank you to Glen for his dedication to the CROP Walk!
CHOIR PRACTICE AND CHRISTMAS CANTATA The Bem Church Council has contracted once more with Cheryl Bohl for special choral music and a
Christmas Cantata again this year! She is working with all members of Bem Church who are willing to
participate in musical offerings, including our regular church choir. We have had some spectacular
anthems the past few Sundays! Be here and enjoy the praise! We will be practicing our Christmas
Cantata Wednesdays in December after our Advent Worship Services. The Cantata will be December 20!
