Daily Bread Soup Kitchen, located in the Hall of Christ’s Lutheran Church, 26 Mill Hill Rd, Woodstock, NY. The Daily Bread Soup kitchen is changing their staffing schedule. Instead of Saint John’s Parish having the months of May and Octo-ber to staff the soup kitchen, the Board of Directors is looking for individual people (from all the local churches) to work at the kitchen one day a month (for example, the third Wednesday of every month) from September through December. If you are able to volunteer one day a month for four months, please contact Barbara Runz at 973-222-5489 or 845-657-4022. You may also email to [email protected]. Thank you so much for considering this great pro-ject.

AUGUST is St. John’s month to stock and staff the Woodstock Good Neighbor Food Pantry.

Support Our Local Elementary Schools! Our Local schools are seeing more children

who are unable to afford school supplies due to the economy. St. John’s Parish and St. Augustine Chapel have been blessed with your kindness and generosity the past few years. All of your thought-fulness has made their lives a little easier by helping to provide them with back to school supplies. We are looking for all who are able to provide items to help us.

We have provided a suggested back to school shopping list for when you purchase a backpack. We will have a school supply collection box in the back of the church for all of the donated items. We will need all of the supplies by August 18th for the distri-bution the following week to the local elementary Schools. (Woodstock, Bennett, and Phoenicia)

Please help us start the elementary school year with a smile. Thank you, Altar Servers

STRENGTHENED BY THE BREAD OF LIFE

Today we resume the “Bread of Life” discourse from John’s Gospel that began two weeks ago. He makes refer-ence to the Jews’ ancestors who ate manna in the desert. These days we would think primarily of Israel wandering in the desert, but faithful Jews would also have known the story of Elijah that we hear today. Strengthened by food and drink in the desert, the angel of the Lord sends him on his forty-day and forty-night journey (the biblical number for a preparation time). Like the food given to Elijah in the desert, Jesus tells his listeners that he is bread for the life of the world. It is very important that we not stop listening to Jesus after his promise of eternal life—a marvelous prom-ise, but this “reward” is not the only reason we feast on the Bread of Life. We also come to the table to be made strong for the journey of mission, that the whole world might have life in the fullness of Christ. We are compelled, if we have eaten of the bread of life, to go forth in service to all. Blessings, Father George
