Page 10: St. John’s E.M High School · *both ten thousand and thousand places have same digits. * so go to next highest place i.e., hundreds place. * the number with more hundreds is greater

Case1: Comparing numbers with different number of digits. Rule: A number with more number of digits is always greater than a less number of digits.

Example:

Case2: Comparing numbers with same number of digits. Rule:

Start by comparing the digits from the left most place till you find different digits.

Compare these digits to decide the greater and smaller of the given digits.

Page 11: St. John’s E.M High School · *both ten thousand and thousand places have same digits. * so go to next highest place i.e., hundreds place. * the number with more hundreds is greater

Example 2

In this example * both the numbers have equal number of digits. *both ten thousand and thousand places have same digits. * so go to next highest place i.e., hundreds place. * the number with more hundreds is greater , 7>3. So 59,731 is greater than 59,320. 59,731 > 59,320

Observe some more examples on comparison which are given below . 1) 9,999 < 10,000 2) 38,492 > 3,849 3) 40,500 = 40,500 4) 81,349 > 81,249 5) 90,909 < 90,990
