John XXIII was a pope in the Roman Catholic Church from 1958 to 1963. John XXIII was one of the most-popular popes of all time. He began a new era in the church with his openness to change. He was made a saint of the church in 2014. John XXIII was born Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli on November 25, 1881, in Sotto il Monte, Italy. He was one of 13 children. His father was a farmer. At the age of 11, Roncalli began to study for the priesthood in the northern Italian town of Bergamo. He moved to Rome for religious studies and became a priest on August 10, 1904.
In 1905 Roncalli became the secretary for the new Bergamo bishop. He helped the bishop with many new projects and also taught at the seminary in Bergamo. In 1915 Roncalli was drafted to serve in World War I (1914–18). He served as a chaplain to wounded soldiers. In 1921 Roncalli was asked to serve in the Holy See, the government of the Roman Catholic Church, located in Vatican City. Roncalli was appointed to be the Vatican diplomat to Bulgaria in 1925 and then to Turkey and Greece in 1935. In 1944 Roncalli was made nuncio (the highest Vatican diplomat) to France. In 1953 Roncalli became a cardinal, which is a special type of bishop in the church. Roncalli was elected pope on October 28, 1958, and chose the name John XXIII. Since John was old, it was expected that he would not do much as pope. However, soon after his election, John announced a meeting of church bishops. This kind of meeting had not happened in almost 100 years. He thought the church needed reform. He was the first pope to admit this since the Reformation in the 1500s. The meeting was called the Second Vatican Council. It began in 1962 and ended in 1965. The Second Vatican Council made many changes to the church. John also wrote important church letters, including Pacem in Terris (“Peace on Earth”). The letter was addressed to all humankind and was about the importance of world peace. The letter was read all over the world and was praised by politicians and churchmen. John was a very open pope who spoke of love and service to others. He met with leaders of other Christian groups and preached harmony with Jews. He was the first pope to receive a Japanese Shinto high priest at the Vatican.
John died on June 3, 1963, in Vatican City. He was canonized, or made a saint, on April 27, 2014. His feast day is October 11. https://kids.britannica.com/kids/article/Saint-John-XXIII/610293

MASS INTENTIONS Pastor’s Corner Weekly Message from Father Manno
Newman Family, How do we know who we truly are? Discovering who we are -- in the light of the truth of who Jesus is -- is one of the most important tasks we can undertake during our spiritual journey. Given this, why does it often feel so hard to find ourselves? Why does it feel like we so often don’t know ourselves at all or even understand why we do the things
we do? Perhaps it is because we don’t venture close enough to the Light! Think of it this way: when you are driving at night in the car, your windshield looks so clean! It looks perfect! It doesn’t need any polishing at all! Nothing to worry about here. Carry on! But then you go to bed and as soon as you wake up in the morning and begin to drive again, all of your windshield’s previously invisible dirt and imperfections become very visible, indeed. In fact, the higher the sun gets in the sky, the more brightly it shines, the better able you are to see all the grime on your windshield. This, though it sounds paradoxical, is an excellent analogy for spiritual life! The closer we grow to God who is “the true light that gives light to everyone” (John 1:9), the more apparent our weaknesses and vices will become. This should not be cause for discouragement or anxiety, but should rather be taken as a sign of hope! Jesus loves us so much that He refuses to let us remain imprisoned by our iniquities! And so He gently reveals our chains to us, takes them in hand, and asks, “Will you let me break these? May I free you from them for all eternity?” All we must do is courageously say “yes” to His merciful invitation and then submit to His healing power (knowing that it might hurt a little but that He will never abandon us in our pain). Once we do this, we will be able to look into the divine mirror, gaze upon our reflection with newly illumined eyes, and say, “Oh, there you are!” just as one of the Lost Boys said to Peter Pan in the movie ‘Hook’ when finally Peter had once again embraced the truth of who he was. God bless, Fr Manno
