Pastor’s Desk

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Our summer visiting priest Fr. Godfrey Bamuganyire will be returning to his parish in Uganda on August 9th. Next weekend he will be telling you at all the Masses a little bit more about his parish and asking your assistance in a special Second Collection that we will take next weekend. As you can imagine, there are many needs in his large and sprawling parish, both in terms of the parish buildings and in transportation to his 31 mission chapels, not to mention the direct needs of his people for some of the basic necessities of life. As you have been with so many others in the past, bring an open ear and an open heart which will guide your generosity!

Our latest total of pledges for our Archdiocesan Sharing God’s Blessings Annual Appeal is currently $74,639, which is 80.3% of our goal of $92,953.00. Pledge forms are available at the exits of the church. Please help us reach our goal with a five month pledge or a one time gift. Every parish family should consider making some type of gift this year!

Msgr. Richard Arnhols, Pastor

Reflection on Today’s Readings

How do you pray? At times we pray as Jesus taught: your kingdom come, give us what we need, forgive us, help us forgive, do not test us. However, sometimes our prayer focuses mostly on ourselves. Some days, we have the consciousness of Abraham. We are persistent in asking God to live up to the divine promise of mercy toward others. When our focus is on ourselves, our vision narrows and we tend to give up when we don’t get what we want. When our focus is on God and openness to the good that God offers, we often find God present even when the answer is not what we’d asked. God always answers our prayers. Sometimes the answer looks different than what we ask and sometimes the answer is “no.” Jesus says ask, seek, and knock. Then we will receive, find God present in every situation and doors will be opened. He doesn’t say that we will receive what we asked, unless we ask for the Holy Spirit. Not that we will find what we seek, unless we seek to do God’s will. Nor that the door on which we knock will be opened unless that door is the heart of Christ. In his 2015 Lenten letter, Pope Francis asked the Church to pray to the Lord, “Make our hearts like yours.” If that is our prayer, we will find God with us in every life circumstance. We will have Abraham’s courage to be persistent before God. We will find God’s power alive in us. Buried with Christ in baptism, we were also raised with him. Pray as he taught. Ask, seek, and knock today. “God, our Father, we are totally dependent upon you for every breath, and you invite us into relationship with our brothers and sisters and all creation. Make our hearts one with the heart of Christ so that we might know and live your will for us and for our world. Amen.”

Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!

“Ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” Luke 11:9

Jesus assures us that if we ask Him, God will take of what we need. The problem is that in our culture we often confuse what we really need with what we simply want. Many people need very little. However, we usually want so much more. A good steward only asks God for what he needs.
