Children’s Christmas Choir The children of St. John’s Parish and School, grades 1 through 12, are invited to sing at the 5 p.m. Family Mass on Christmas Eve. Led by Mrs. Cara O’Shea, children will rehearse on Sunday, December 2nd, 9th, 16th and 23rd from 11 a.m. to 12 Noon in the Chapel. They will prepare the beautiful music of Christmas while also learning some basic music principles and techniques. It is important for children to try to attend all rehearsals in order to be well prepared to serve as Music Ministers. For questions or more information contact Cara O’Shea, Director of Music Education, SJE School. [email protected]

Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe November 25, 2018

Jesus Christ is the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead and ruler of the kings of the earth. — Revelation 1:5

CHRIST IS KING: Today, we end the Liturgical year “B” by proclaiming loudly and strongly that Christ is KING. This is what all readings from years A, B, or C remind us about at the end of every liturgical year. Dear Parishioners, I know that Kings are no longer appreciated because of the idea that power is in one person or family forever. Our Declaration of Independ- ence says, “All people are created equal”. No wonder those elected president have to prove it and be a presi- dent for a period of 4 years and if lucky 8 years and they are gone. But some presidents behave just like kings. That means holding the right of life and death over whomever they want, keeping their power for a very long time, unless driven out by wars. These kinds of people surround themselves with military rules, turn into horrible dictators, acquire all kinds of wealth and they have no respect at all for their citizens whom they oppress unless you are a member of their family or a very close friend. This is the kind of situa- tion that is very common in many African and Asian countries plus some South American countries as well, where democratic governments exist only in words. Adding to this, a king or president is limited by the territory of his/her country, by his/her life expectancy or as much as people tolerate them. This is not so with Jesus Christ. Jesus is a King who died for us, and rose from the dead, a universal King who has no limit at all . He is the King of kings and His kingdom will never end. Unlikeother kings, Jesus is the humble King who says, "Learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart". Most of all, a King who calls us to His eternal Kingdom in Heaven. Let us, dear Parishioners, turn to Christ our King. Let us worship Him. Let us follow His commandments. He leads us to the true peace, true life, true joy and hope that we all yearn for. Viva Christo Rey!! Long Life to Christ the King!! God bless, Father Bernardin MUGABO

Christ is King - On the final Sunday of the liturgical year we celebrate the feast of Christ the King. It’s easy to understand today’s scriptures as events that happened long ago and far away, or predictions that will come true somewhere, some day. But they invite us to claim Christ as our King here and now. Jesus’ words to Pilate in the Gospel remind us that his kingdom transcends time and place. And the prophecies from Daniel and Revelation give us reason to be faithful to Christ our King right here and right now. By concluding the year with this feast we are proclaiming our faith that Jesus Christ is the one and only King over all seasons, all peoples, and all of creation. No matter what nation we belong to or what language we speak, he “has made us into a kingdom” (Revelation 1:6)—one people united in love and peace for all eternity. Copyright © J. S. Happy Thanksgiving Weekend to all !! Vocations: A few weeks ago when I spoke on vocations – some people asked if they could have a written copy of the mission of the Sisters of Mercy. Here it is: “To connect the rich to the poor; The healthy to the sick; The educated and skilled to the uninstructed; The influential to those of no consequence; The powerful to the weak; To do the work of God on earth.” (From the book Tender-Courage by Sr. M. Joanna Regan, RSM) Vatican-Council 11 reminded us that by virtue of our Baptism each one of us is called to holiness of life. Our Diocese of Sacramento wants all par ishes to have a Vocation committee. If you have an interest in being part of such a group – contact the RE office. Training will be provided by the diocese.

Pope Francis’ November intentions: “That the language of love and dialogue may always prevail over the language of conflict.” Prayer for our Deceased : “Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, in your compassion and your love – we entrust to your merciful Heart the souls of our beloved departed who have gone before us in faith: ____________________ We hope in your promise that all who seek You will find eternal life, a place of refreshment, light and peace, forever and ever. Amen.” Please contact the RE office above for registration/ information materials re. the following programs: RE/CCD/CFF: Sunday morning classes, beginning at 8:55, for public-school children grades K through Jr. High & beyond. Nave and Narthex: The Altar Society has traditionally been responsible for keeping order and special cleaning tasks in the worship space at SJE. With the renovation of our church our parish has been given a clean slate to work with to provide a reverent peaceful space in which to gather, prepare for mass and worship together as well as share information about our faith and community events. To accomplish this goal, the Altar Society has formed a Worship Environment Work Group. The group is working to provide elements to beautify spaces and present informational materials in a way that is visible, accessible and organized. Also being created is a “Giving Wing” in the Narthex to offer a consistent place for donations of goods for Saint Vincent DePaul and the other organizations we support and make it easier for the volunteers picking up those donations. We recognize that things have looked somewhat bare and are committed to improvements as soon as possible. If you have any question or comments, please email us at [email protected] .

During the Christmas season our bulletin company is requesting early bulletin transmissions so please call the rectory (916-483-8454) to find out the dates we will need to have your articles here. Thank you.
