Notes From The Pastor’s Desk

EASTER SUNDAYWWW.SJBDE.ORGAPRIL 16, 2017

A Joyous Easter to everyone! This is our most solemn feast because we celebrate the miracle of Christ’s Resurrection from the dead. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia is a Hebrew expression of praise to God. It has been preserved, untranslated, by the Early Christians as a superlative expression of thanksgiving, joy, and triumph…precisely at this great feast of Easter.

This feast touches each one of us at the deepest level because, weak as we humans are, we needed Divine intervention to save us. Not only did God accomplish this by sending His Son to instruct us but took on the penalty of sin upon Himself and laid down His innocent life for every one of us. The old order of sin and corruption is gone and in Christ’s Resurrection we are raised to the highest dignity.

May you share the endless Joy of what we celebrate today…A Blessed Easter! You are remembered in our Masses.

Fathers Piekarski, Martin & Gerres; Deacons Bailey, Wuebbels & Fontana;

and the staff of Saint John the Beloved Parish

Remember the Celebration of Divine Sunday on April 23rd in Saint John the Beloved Church. Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament begins as 2 p.m. followed by confessions to 4:30. Chaplet of the Divine Mercy will be prayed at 3 p.m. and Benediction follows at 4:45, followed by Mass at 5 p.m.

The Time Capsule, that was created to mark the end of the 60th anniversary of the Parish and 40th anniversary of the church itself, was buried at the foot of our new baptismal font. The capsule contained artifacts

from our jubilee and present history. Included were the signatures of present friends and parishioners. Before Lent, the capsule was interred and the new baptismal font was erected on top. The ceremony was completed with our school children. Their teacher, Kathleen Kenney, was also present and is connected to the origins of this new marble, mosaic and brass font. This very font is where Miss Kenney was baptized at its original location of Christ Our King Parish that closed in the Fall. Indeed, there is a connection of the past, present and future in the Waters of Baptism. The font is dedicated to the memory of Christ Our King Parish

Parish Life continues to contribute to the community but is looking for new members to donate their time, ideas and enthusiasm. Whether a new parent in the school or a recently retired parishioner; all women of the parish are invited to join this endeavor! Please consider giving your time to a wonderful cause and it’s a great opportunity to meet a few new friends. The time commitment is up to you, monthly meetings are encouraged but not required. OUTREACH DONATIONS

Our Outreach Volunteers are often asked what donations we need the most in the Food Closet. We are blessed to have so many generous Parishioners who regularly donate the food items we need, as our closet often needs replenished. We are fortunate at this time to have a decent supply of peanut butter, pasta, tuna, and canned vegetables.

We are most in need of the following items: Rice, Beans, Cereal, Pasta Sauce, Macaroni and Cheese, Toilet Paper, Laundry Detergent, and Shampoo.

As always, thank you for your very generous support of our Parish Outreach, as we work to help our neighbors in need.

During the Easter Season, we will be singing … The Regina Caeli (“Queen of Heaven” in Latin). It is an ancient Marian Latin hymn sung or prayed as a tribute to our Lord’s Resurrection and to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Although its origins are unknown, it has been traced back to the 12th century. Traditionally, it is sung or prayed during the Easter Season from Holy Saturday until Pentecost, especially at noon or at the conclusion of Night Prayer.

Latin:

Regina cæli, lætare, alleluia:

Quia quem meruisti portare, alleluia, Resurrexit, sicut dixit, alleluia,

Ora pro nobis Deum, alleluia.

V. Gaude et lætare, Virgo Maria, alleluia.

R. Quia surrexit Dominus vere, alleluia.

English Translation:

Queen of Heaven, rejoice, alleluia.

The Son whom you merited to bear, alleluia. Has risen, as He said, alleluia.

Pray for us to God, alleluia.

V. Rejoice and be glad, O Virgin Mary, alleluia. R. For the Lord has truly risen, alleluia.

2017 Annual Catholic Appeal – “Their Eyes Were Opened and They Recognized Him”

In the Resurrection of Jesus we find hope in the prospect of everlasting life in heaven. But to obtain eternal life, we must accept the Lord’s invitation to follow Him by imitating His love and compassion for others.

During the weekend of April 29 & 30, our parish will participate in the 2017 Annual Catholic Appeal – a campaign conducted each year throughout the Diocese of Wilmington. Funds generated through the Appeal help provide critical financial support to nearly forty pastoral, charitable and educational programs and ministries. As Christian stewards we are called to a lifelong conversion to the ways of Jesus. Each of us is asked to examine the blessings we have received from God and to discern how best to use them for others. We do this cheerfully and sacrificially and with faith in God’s love for us, knowing that He will provide for our earthly wants.

You can learn more about the 2017 Annual Catholic Appeal by reading the campaign insert in this week’s Dialog or visiting the diocesan website at www.cdow.org; click “Giving” then “Annual Catholic Appeal.”

Why is it important that the Church's moral teaching be expressed in terms of a conception of natural law rather than in terms of some other foundational moral view?  Find out when Professor Mark C. Murphy from Georgetown University, gives a free presentation titled, "God Incarnate Under the Moral Law". He will explore and defend two ideas: 1) that it is crucial to a proper understanding and appreciation of the Incarnation that we and Jesus Christ are under a common moral law, and 2) that the Church's conception of natural law is crucial to underwriting the idea that we and Christ are under a common moral law. The presentation is free, open to the public in 115 Purnell Hall on the University of Delaware campus, on Thursday, April 20, 2017 from 7:30 - 8:30, and sponsored by the Society of Catholic Scholars of Delaware and the UD Department of Philosophy. Happy Easter! Christ has risen, Halleluiah! On this most glorious day we celebrate Christ’s triumph over death. We are reminded and reassured of the truth that Jesus revealed to us a truth that provides us with hope. As you spend this day celebrating His return remember to do so with joy in your heart. The

glory of His resurrection is that it is for all to share. As Christ tells us, “Do not be afraid,” so this week be filled with the courage and hope that his resurrection provides and be not afraid to joyfully declare that Christ has risen indeed.

MARRIAGE MOMENTS

SundayApril 16: Easter. The resurrection of Jesus which we celebrate on Easter was a pretty hard story for the women and apostles to believe. Today, we believe on the testimony of others and thousands of years of retelling the story. Unconditional love is so hard to believe. Believe your spouse's love anyway.

PARENTING POINTERS

Sunday April 16: Easter. After the resurrection several disciples were walking to Emmaus and talking about what had happened. Take a long walk with your child this weekend. Observe; pay attention if someone crosses your path. Be open to conversation or let nature speak to you of the God of creation.

RCIA 2017

In the course of his final teaching before his arrest Jesus told his disciples, “I have told you this so that my joy might be in you and your joy might be complete” (Jn 15:11). As you can tell from the smiles on their faces, these picture you see above are pictures of joy. These are our RCIA candidates and their sponsors who will be received into full communion with the Church here at St. John’s at the Easter Vigil on Saturday evening April 15th.

In 2013 in his apostolic letter Evangelii Gaudium (The Joy of the Gospel) Pope Francis highlighted four qualities of the Christian life; Enthusiasm, Joy, Hope and Community. Throughout the RCIA process these qualities have been born in the hearts of our candidates as they have prepared for reception of the Sacraments at our Easter Vigil. The source of their joy is the deeper relationship with God and his Church that they have acquired during their preparation. Through the community that has developed among them they have found new enthusiasm for the faith and are filled with the hope that comes with a fresh encounter with Jesus.

Our candidates have learned that, “the joy of the Gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus” (EG Par 1). Please keep them in your prayers, and join with us as we celebrate their reception into the Church at the Easter Vigil.

For information about RCIA please contact Deacon Tom Bailey, 302.559.6458 or [email protected]
