AUGUST 22, 2021 WWW.SJBDE.ORG 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time

We have been studying Chapter 6 of John’s Gospel that records Jesus' miracle of feeding the five thousand and then Jesus explains that “He is The Bread of Life come down from heaven.”   The chapter ends today on a sad note when Jesus’ own disciples had great difficulties accepting His call to eat His flesh and drink His blood as a way to life.  Surely if we had been there, we would have problems also.  Jesus is fully aware of their difficulty.  If

they have problems with this, how will they react when He rises from the dead and ascends to the Father?  Jesus then points out where the problem really lies. “It is the spirit that gives life; the flesh is useless. The words I spoke to you are spirit and life.” The disciples are hearing Jesus’ words only in the “flesh” and not with the penetrating eyes of the Spirit.  Understanding the real meaning of Jesus’ words requires the gift, the grace of faith: “No one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.” Faith is a gift open to all but it is a gift to which one needs to be open to receive. And so, after this, many of Jesus’ disciples left Him and stopped going with Him.Jesus then turns to the Twelve, “What about you? Do you want to go away too?”  Peter makes his profound act of faith.  In the original Greek, the translation is “Lord, to whom shall we go?  “We have come to know and have come to believe and continue to do so…” It indicates not just a momentary outburst of faith but an ongoing state of seeing and believing.  When we reflect on it, we know that Peter is right. There is really no viable alternative to the Way of Jesus.  Chapter 6 of John’s Gospel is important because it parallels the Last Supper scene of the other gospels where Jesus gives His Body to eat and His Blood to drink and soon after is denied by many including His own apostles.  This Gospel is Saint John’s way of emphasizing the presence of God in Jesus;  His offering of this sacrificial life to us in Him by believing in Him and partaking of it.  This means trusting Him even when He states that “This is My Body and This is My Blood” (Lk 22, Matt 26, Mk 14) as well as “The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and on the third day rise again (Lk 24).” For Peter and those that remained, walking away from Christ meant turning their backs on the Son of God, and the only hope for their salvation. Those that walked away had been interested in Jesus to some degree.  However, they walked away from Him because they felt like they could do without Him. What about you? Could you live without Jesus?  If you no longer followed Him, would it change anything about your life now, or your future?

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA), is the process through which an individual is brought into full communion in the Catholic faith. What does that mean? To whom does it apply?

First, to be in full communion with the Church means you have received the sacraments of initiation; Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist and are trying to live a faithful Catholic Christian life. Secondly, to whom does it apply?

• Anyone who has not been baptized• Someone who has received only baptism, but no other sacraments • Non-Catholics who feel drawn to the Catholic faith • Those outside the Church with no faith connection or religious affiliation

Do you see yourself in any of these situations? Do you know someone who might; a friend, a spouse, a neighbor? If your answer is yes, then the following invitation is one you should not let pass you by. The invitation is to participate in the RCIA process here at St. John’s which begins on Monday September 13 at 7:00PM. You will not be disappointed. As Jesus said to the first disciples, “come and see for yourself” (Jn 1:39). To participate call the Parish office, 302-999-0211.

Lord Jesus Christ, only begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. Reading I Jos 24:1-2a, 15-17, 18b Joshua gathered together all the tribes of Israel at Shechem, summoning their elders, their leaders,

their judges, and their officers. When they stood in ranks before God, Joshua addressed all the people:“If it does not please you to serve the LORD,decide today whom you will serve, the gods your fathers served beyond the River or the gods of the Amorites in whose country you are now dwelling. As for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.”But the people answered, “Far be it from us to forsake the LORD for the service of other gods. For it was the LORD, our God, who brought us and our fathers up out of the land of Egypt, out of a state of slavery. He performed those great miracles before our very eyes and protected us along our entire journey and among the peoples through whom we passed. Therefore we also will serve the LORD, for he is our God.”

Responsorial Psalm Ps. 34: 2-3, 16-17, 18-19, 20-21 R. Taste and see the goodness of the Lord.

Reading II Ephesians 5:21-32 Brothers and sisters:Live in love, as Christ loved us. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ loved the churchand handed himself over for her to sanctify her, cleansing her by the bath of water with the word, that he might present to himself the church in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. So also husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one hates his own flesh but rather nourishes and cherishes it, even as Christ does the church, because we are members of his body. For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. This is a great mystery, but I speak in reference to Christ and the church.

Gospel Acclamation John 6:63c, 68cR. Alleluia, alleluia.Your words, Lord, are Spirit and life;you have the words of everlasting life.R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel Jn 6:60-69 Many of Jesus’ disciples who were listening said, “This saying is hard; who can accept it?”Since Jesus knew that his disciples were murmuring about this, he said to them, “Does this shock you? What if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? It is the spirit that gives life, while the flesh is of no avail. The words I have spoken to you are Spirit and life. But there are some of you who do not believe.”Jesus knew from the beginning the ones who would not believe and the one who would betray him. And he said, “For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by my Father.”As a result of this, many of his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him.Jesus then said to the Twelve, “Do you also want to leave?” Simon Peter answered him, “Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God.”

Profession of Faith

The Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.
