July 21, 2019 WWW.SJBDE.ORG 16TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

A NOTE FROM THE PASTOR’S DESKUsually when we use the word mystery, we think of a story that has an ending we try to solve before we get to the last page of the book or last five minutes of the movie.  For the Church a mystery is a truth that is incomprehensible to the reason and knowable only through divine revelation.

In this Sunday’s second reading to the Colossians, Paul speaks about a mystery, “a mystery that has been hidden for ages is now manifested to God’s Holy Ones.”  The mystery is this: Christ is in you.

Sadly, when it comes to this Mystery many people are clueless. We go about our day, so busy that we overlook the purpose for our actions.  We overlook the reason for our being.  We forget about the presence of Christ.  Like Martha in the Gospel we are concerned with doing instead of being.  Martha was busy doing this and that in her valiant efforts to prepare for Jesus.  Mary, her sister, was concerned with being, with being with Jesus. These days, most people are overwhelmed with distractions.  Even the technology meant to make communication easier seems to be engrossing more of our time.  We need to stop and hear the Lord in the silence. Our many concerns, real as they are, should not consume us, nor should they rob us of the opportunity of the Divine Presence in and around us.   When we make the time to be in His presence, when we join Mary of Bethany in just enjoying the Lord in our lives, we will find ourselves walking a road less traveled, a road of serenity in the middle of hectic activity.  When we choose to nurture the presence of the Lord within us, like Mary, we grasp the mystery and will be choosing the better part.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION FORMATIONOur Summer Religious Education Intensive Program was  a huge success. We hosted 215 children from 1st grade through 8th grade. Each student learned and grew in the understanding of their faith and our religion. We are very grateful that this program was blessed by so many young children eager to learn and share their faith. As well, our community was greatly blessed to

have 15 adults teaching and by the 16 teen helpers. All our teaching staff shared their talent and treasure to prepare and form our youth disciples as they move forward on the journey of faith. Please see the picture of our first graders with their “Tongues of Fire” hats. All the students were filled with the passionate gift of love and curiosity. We look forward to welcoming back all our children next year to our program. A special thank you is extended to Miss Ballintyn for all her behind the scenes work to ensure that we were ready each and every day. Also, a note of gratitude to Chick-Fil-A for their hard work in fulfilling the orders for the children on the dates that they ordered lunch. We are blessed by all the partnerships we have both in our community and by those businesses so willing to help us. God bless all our families as they continue to enjoy their summer.

INSPIRE

God bless our newly Baptized!

Anna Vittoria Ciconte Logan James Lewicki

May our little ones who were baptized be blessed by our parishioners' prayers and good works.  May they continue to grow in their love for God.

PRAYER TO ST. MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL

St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.  May God rebuke him we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Marriage Moments: Being hospitable vs. being "present." Some people are like Martha (doing the cooking) others are like Mary (listening attentively to a guest) Both are necessary. In your marriage, which of you are drawn to which role? Try switching one time to broaden your skill set. Parenting Pointers: Is it a chore to get your kids to help around the house? It's not too late to start since it doesn't have to end with the end of summer. By Susan Vogt, www.SusanVogt.net

“It is He whom we proclaim.” Are you being called to proclaim Christ and the word of God? Call Fr. Norm Carroll 302-573-3113 [email protected].

Pray for Vocations: That men and women called to proclaim the kingdom of God by their lives of service will have the determination to overcome every obstacle to their response through prayer and the practice of virtue, we pray to the Lord.

INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK We all have a tremendous amount of responsibility. Every day presents more challenges and lists of things we need to accomplish. Life, however, is more than just to do lists. Life is more about who we are and how present we are to what is happening around us. Our relationship with God is the same. It is not just about doing the right things or showing up in the right places, even though these are certainly important. What is more important is the quality of our presence in God's presence. How attentive are we to His revelations of presence to us? If life's demands, however noble they be, overly consume us, we will miss being surprised by God's presence: in creation, in sacrament, in our brothers and sisters, and in ourselves. Listen carefully to Martha and Mary's story today.

A BIG THANK YOU from our bishop, diocese, parish and I for making our parish target of $179,000 in pledges for the 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal. Any overage collected will return to our parish. Please make sure that you honor the pledge you made. Your support of the diocesan appeal allows the diocese to carry on with the various ministries that they offer for education, for the migrant, for the needy. It is our way of sharing collectively in the compassion that we celebrate as followers of Christ. God reward your generosity. Thank You!

GROWING WITH THE GOSPEL

THE JOURNEY BEGINS

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA), will begin at St. John the Beloved on Monday September 9th at 7:00 PM. What is RCIA? It is the process of instruction and preparation by which a person becomes a full member of the Catholic Church, through the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist.

Our Catholic faith is a treasure which takes a lifetime to fully appreciate. Yet for a variety of reasons many good people have turned away from the active practice of the faith in their daily lives. Some have bought into the secular message that the gospel is no longer relevant in a modern society. Or, others have lost a sense of God's presence in their lives.

KNOWING GOD IS EVERYTHING

In assisting past participants in the RCIA process we have seen firsthand how the deep longings of the human spirit cannot be satisfied only by what the world has to offer. Many of them recognized first and foremost a void in their lives that was not being filled. Other reasons they were drawn to RCIA include:

• A longing to become a part of a faith community • The desire for family members to be united in their faith and worship together • For parents of students in our school to become more familiar with the faith • For couples planning marriage to be able to share together in the Eucharist

Do you see yourself in any of these situations? Do you know someone who might benefit from RCIA; someone close to you, a friend, a spouse, a neighbor, or a fiancée? If your answer is yes, then you are invited to respond to this invitation. More information can be obtained simply by calling the parish office at 302-999-0211, or contact Deacon Tom Bailey at 302-559-6458, or email, [email protected].

A JOURNEY TO THE HEART OF THE FAITH RCIA The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

GOSPEL MEDITATION - Active and contemplative. At work and at rest. These are dynamics we all face in our lives, and if we're honest, we might not always balance perfectly! In this Sunday's Gospel, our daily tensions play out in two sisters. Mary "sat beside the Lord at his feet listening to him speak." Martha, on the other hand, is "burdened with much serving." This, as it turns out, is not necessarily "the better part." All of us reading this have some sort of labor we engage in. We have different trades or careers. We have responsibilities as family members, some of which may take up most of our time. In the time of Scripture, showing hospitality to guests was one of the most important values in society. Our work is important. Jesus himself spent decades as a carpenter. So what's the problem with Martha? Martha is burdened, anxious, and worried. Not only that, but she resents her sister's choice. "Tell her to help me," she demands of Jesus. How easy it is to get very busy doing good things. We need to provide for our families and plan for retirement. We need to make sure children are clothed, fed, and educated. Our committees, ministries, and sports schedules need to stay on track. However, without a balance of work with rest, without contemplation in the midst of our action, we will miss the point. While many parts are required for our life in the world to function, the better part is our relationship with God. This week, make time in your busy schedule to sit at Jesus' feet. Maybe this is 20 minutes with Scripture, participating in a daily Mass, or a quiet walk alone in the park. Receive what Christ wants to speak to you.

RECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS: As I get older, what really matters to me changes. I remember being in high school and having to wear certain brands and to look a certain way. Now, many days I simply wear what is clean! I used to collect certain things that I no longer seem to care about much now. I wanted certain things for my children, and now I am happy if they are happy, regardless of what happens. I have changed political stances a few times. I even follow different sports teams today than I did when I was younger. Time, circumstance, wisdom, and even disillusionment all play a part in my ever-changing attitude toward what really matters in life. All has changed except my faith. My faith is the one constant in my life. It is the most precious of all the gifts God has given to me. Life hasn't been a constant high, and there have been several low valleys along the way. It has been my faith that has seen me through all times, good and bad. If anything has changed, it is that Jesus matters more today than he did yesterday.  What really matters to you? What's the main thing in your life? I have witnessed once-strong disciples place politics, wealth, career, and family ahead of Jesus over time. All those things are enticing, but they are things that change. Even your family grows and changes as the years go by, as does your relationship with them. The one thing that does not change is God. God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. It can bring great peace to your life when what matters to you is the one thing that remains constant. The main thing is to keep the main thing, the main thing. That main thing is Jesus.- Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS
