Dear Parish Family, We read today in 2 Peter, “The day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a mighty roar and the elements will be dissolved by fire,

and the earth and everything done on it will be found out.” “What if?” indeed! This reminds me of a poem I learned in 7th grade, “What if Jesus came to your house today?” I guess like the poem described, we may have to put the Bible up front and hide other reading materials … “What if?” This salutary but unsettling re-minder of what is to come brings to mind another piece of litera-ture, “Holy Sonnets” of the 17th century poet and essayist John Donne. It begins with the words: “What if this present were the world’s last night?” If we knew we had such little time left in life, how would we spend it? Rush to the nearest confessional? Seek out the people we love most? Just cower in fear? The poet is not afraid. He invites his soul to look into his heart and see there the image of Christ crucified, which for him is beautiful and offers him assurance of mercy. We should note that St. Peter’s imagery is not simply about destruction. He follows immediately with this: “But according to his promise we await new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.” Similarly Isaiah, who is quoted in Mark’s, is not suggesting that valleys be filled in and mountains be made low in a destructive way. The point is to make a straight, direct route for God to come to his people. Anyone living in a mountainous area knows how travel times can be doubled and tripled by winding roads. John the Baptist is “the voice” calling for the straight path. There are many singers and actors famous for their voice. John is famous for his voice, but in a different way. He is the herald, not drawing attention to himself but to the one who is to come after him. There are prophetic voices around us even today, calling us to fill in val-leys and make mountains low. Often they are unlikely prophets, hard for us to recognize. Mountains and valleys constitute obstacles. The valleys and moun-tains of Isaiah are not the physical ones that would require engi-neers to level out. The ups and downs and winding roads are in the “wasteland” that our hearts can sometimes be. Mountains of self-importance, of greed, of whatever makes us think we are above the human condition. Ravines of jealousy, of self-pity, of whatever drags us down and stifles hope. We all have them at times, and in an infinite variety of forms. Maybe there is an unlikely prophet, a voice crying in our desert, to help us. Be that as it may the question remains: How can I, how can you, make a straight path for the Lord into our lives and hearts? How can we prepare for the “new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells”? May be we should begin with some ‘stillness’ to curb our minds from rushing and focus on the “coming of the Lord” that our inner voice is prompting us to. Fr. Tom Kunnel C.O.

ADVENT DAY 2017 was our biggest and best yet! Over two hundred parents, children and guests participated as they lear-ned a little, crafted a lot, saw a great deal and munched on outstanding refreshments. What a wonderful way to usher in the holy season of Advent.

I would like to thank all of you who helped to make the morning such a huge success. Special thanks go out to the whole Giam-piccolo family who contributed not only food and drinks, but man and woman power for two whole days. Mr. Melwyn Rodri-ques kept everyone supplied with the best coffee around which he prepared on the great commercial coffee maker he has provi-ded. Lisa and Danielle Carpio, Dominika Fanning and Christine Mascola kept the kitchen and dining area moving along like clo-ckwork. Eileen Peterson helped in many ways and even took the time to photograph the event. Teachers Joe Roldan, Mary O'Sullivan, Jonathan Fanning, Marleni Lemus,

Isabelle Ramos, Edith Nova, Kay Young and others each contri-buted in so many ways. Dozens of kids and parents brought in all the goodies that were most appreciated. I know I have only skimmed the list, and if I have left your name out, just know your help made this day a great one for OUR children and fami-lies. Last, but NOT least, I thank

our Confirmation Candidates, Mario Zamora for for setting up and for ALL the parents and kids who cleaned up.

In the words of Tiny Tim, "God bless us everyone."

TODAY'S READINGS NEWS OF COMFORT In a time of preparation, much of it having to do with mate-rial things, it is good to hear the words of Isaiah, "Comfort, give comfort to my people, / says your God" (Isaiah 40:1). In a time of such stress and rush, when our usual burdens are augmented by piles of Christmas preparations, we can choose to slow down, take some time to heal, and appreciate the enormous gift we are about to receive. Christ, the Son of God, has become one of us, and knows our human limita-tions. Yet God, even now, is freeing us from the burdens that our inattentiveness to our God and to our deepest inner longings have heaped upon us. The Lord comes, not as a king with mighty armies, but as a shepherd leading the flocks with care and tenderness. Isaiah prophesies good news: our oppression is over, our sins forgiven. The savior we have awaited is coming, not the first time, but in the end times, as our salvation. First Reading -- The rugged land shall be made a plain; the rough country, a broad valley (Isaiah 40:1-5, 9-11). Psalm -- Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation (Psalm 85). Second Reading -- Conduct yourselves in holiness, has-tening the coming of the day of God (2 Peter 3:8-14). Gospel -- I have baptized you with water; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit (Mark 1:1-8).

What could be more familiar than the Christmas story--and yet what could be more extraordinary? The cast of characters is strange and exotic: shepherds and magicians, an emperor and a despot, angels, and a baby who is Almighty God. The strangeness calls for an expla-nation, and this book provides it by examining the characters and the story in light of the biblical and historical context.

The perfect book for the season. Start
