Dear Parish Family, Our Human Life revolves around FOUR LIVES, which are intertwined - our work life, our love life, faith life and our food life. Within this context, it is fascinating how much of our lives is linked to the food

part. We are indeed what we eat; physically we become what we con-sume. Our family and social relationships are most frequently experi-enced around meals, and summer time is particularly significant be-cause of our meeting to eat! For many of us, much of our work life—from farming, through processing, packaging, shopping, advertising, retailing, to cooking and serving—is food-related. And the physical side of this food life is a natural symbolic expression of our mental and spiritual life. Disorders related to the need to please others or to take charge of one's life can result in anorexia and bulimia. Going deeper, religious literature speaks easily of our appetite for wis-dom and understanding as a ‘hunger and thirst of the spirit’, satisfied only by a fitting relationship with the source of all, God. Many of the Psalms allude to this, so too the ultimate longing and promise of an Eternal Banquet. The rabbis drew on this tradition when they interpret-ed the deeper meaning of manna of Exodus as symbolic of the Torah, the word of God which satisfies the hunger of the human spirit for wis-dom and understanding. These realities of human food life and biblical imagery help us grasp the power of Jesus’ assertion that he is the true bread from heaven. This is not first of all a reference to the Eucharist. It is first an application to Jesus of the wisdom understanding of the manna tradition. It is he—known through faith as the Word of God made flesh and revealed most fully in his death and resurrection—who can satisfy our deepest hunger to know what life means and who we are in order to live it. Understood that way, the further application to Eucharist means even more. The miracle of the Eucharist in some way challenges our tendency and power to control everything as the result of our human ingenuity and skill. Again the miracle of the Eucharist baffles our intellect as it cannot be grasped fully by our rational sensi-bilities. How does Divinity reside in the bread and wine or how do we become one with Divinity when we consume the Bread and Wine, now become the Body and Blood of Christ? Christian de Cherge, the Trappist Abbott who was martyred in Algeria in 1996, tells this story of his first communion. He grew up in a Roman Catholic family in France and on the day of his first communion he said to his mother: “I don’t understand what I’m doing.” She an-swered simply: “It’s okay, you don’t have to understand it now, later you will understand.” “I am the bread of life. No one who comes to me shall ever be hungry; no one who believes in me shall thirst again.” This is not easy to be-lieve, to say the least. It demands a great effort for us to let go of the illusion that we can ultimately feed or save ourselves. But this faith is precisely what Christ requires of us. The Sacred Eucharistic Liturgy is not just a meal we have made, not just fellowship, not something we have artistically dreamed up. Its reality does not depend upon our inge-nuity or virtue, our expertise in preaching or singing. It is fundamental-ly an act and gift of God. Our act and gift in return is to receive it, to be nourished by it, to believe it.

TODAY'S READINGS GOD'S WORK We are so busy! Most of us have more than one job to do, and we never seem to have enough time. We are workers, volunteers, parents, friends, and most of us are more than one thing at a time. But which of these is the work of God? We seldom view our ordinary work as being the work of God. We may think that we have to be ministers or priests, missionaries or charity workers, engaged full-time in works formally identified as being "God's work." But everything we do with a faithful heart and with love for others is God's work. We each have our own role to fill in the world, and many gifts are necessary. We cannot always see the direct connection of our daily work to the plan of God. But we trust and we believe that God leads us to do what is needed, where it is needed. What is "God's work?" "This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent" (John 6:29).

READINGS FOR THE WEEK

First Reading -- I will rain down bread from heav-en for you (Exodus 16:2-4, 12-15). Psalm -- The Lord gave them bread from heaven (Psalm 78). Second Reading -- Put on the new self that has been created in God's way (Ephesians 4:17, 20-24). Gospel -- Whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst (John 6:24-35).

We must never forget that the Church is built around Christ and that, as Saint Augustine, Saint Thomas Aquinas and Saint Albert the Great have all said, following Saint Paul (cf. 1 Corinthians 10:17), the Eucharist is the sacrament of the Church's unity, be-cause we all form one single body of which the Lord is the head. We must go back again and again to the Last Supper on Holy Thursday, where we were given a pledge of the mystery of our redemption on the Cross. The Last Supper is the locus of the nas-cent Church, the womb containing the Church of every age. In the Eucharist, Christ's sacrifice is constantly renewed, Pentecost is constantly renewed. May all of you become ever more deeply aware of the importance of the Sunday Eucharist, because Sun-day, the first day of the week, is the day when we honor Christ, the day when we receive the strength to live each day the gift of God.

I would also like to invite the pastors and faithful to a renewed care in their preparation for reception of the Eucharist. Despite our weakness and our sin, Christ wills to make his dwelling in us, asking him for healing. To bring this about, we must do every-thing that is in our power to receive him with a pure heart, cease-lessly rediscovering, through the sacrament of penance, the puri-ty that sin has stained, "putting our soul and our voice in ac-cord," according to the invitation of the Council (cf. Sacrosanctum Concilium, No.11). In fact, sin, especially grave sin, is opposed to the action of Eucharistic grace in us. However, those who cannot go to communion because of their situation, will find nevertheless in a communion of desire and in participation in the Mass saving strength and efficacy.

The Eucharist is not a meal among friends. It is a mystery of cov-

enant. "The prayers and the rites of the Eucharistic sacrifice make the whole history of salvation revive ceaselessly before the eyes of our soul, in the course of the liturgical cycle, and make us penetrate ever more its significance" (Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, [Edith Stein], Wege zur inneren Stille Aschaffen-burg, 1987, p. 67). We are called to enter into this mystery of covenant by conforming our life increasingly every day to the gift received in the Eucharist. It has a sacred character, as Vati-can Council II reminds: "Every liturgical celebration, because it is an action of Christ the priest and of His Body which is the Church, is a sacred action surpassing all others; no other action of the Church can equal its efficacy by the same title and to the same degree " (Sacrosanctum Concilium, No. 7). In a certain way, it is a "heavenly liturgy," anticipation of the banquet in the eternal Kingdom, proclaiming the death and resurrection of Christ, until he comes (cf. 1 Corinthians 11:26).

In order that the People of God never lack ministers to give them the Body of Christ, we must ask the Lord to make the gift of new priests to his Church. I also invite you to transmit the call to the priesthood to young men, so that they will accept with joy and without fear to respond to Christ. They will not be disappointed. May families be the primordial place and the cra-dle of vocations. Pope Benedict XVI
