Dear Parish Family, John 3:16 in today’s Gospel is possibly the most familiar citation in the world. In North America at least, we meet "John 3:16" on billboards, bumper stickers, and

even on placards appearing at major sports events broadcast on national television. It is easy to understand why. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life”—as a one-liner, this is a powerful summation of the Gospel. Yet, powerful as it is, the single verse requires its full context to be fully understood. John 3:16 is very much part of the fabric of the Fourth Gospel. “God so loved the world that he gave his only Son … ” This is not a word spoken on the way to the cross. These simple words powerfully describe the action of God, “loved” and “gave”. The Father “gave” the Son not only in the incarnation but also in the giving over to death by crucifixion. Commentators have observed that the language of a father giv-ing an only son resonates with the Jewish memory of Abraham's readiness to give his only son in sacrifice. It also catches the di-vine self-emptying celebrated in the hymn that Paul quotes in the second chapter of his letter to the Philippians though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God something to be grasped. Rather, he emptied himself … Phil 2:6-7. As in John's prologue, this hymn addresses the whole movement of divine self-revelation in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. “ … so that everyone who believes in him … might have eternal life.” Eternal life (zoen ionion) means more than our spontaneous contemporary understanding of these words sug-gests. In John's vocabulary, “eternal life” is not simply unending life after death. It means literally “the eon life”—or the life of the “age to come” already begun. It is precisely the new “born-again” or “born-from-above” life that Jesus discussed with Nico-demus. To have eternal life is to enter or see the kingdom of God by being born of “water and Spirit” (Jn 3:4-5). The rest of the Gospel of John leads us to see that to believe in the Son is to accept Jesus as sent by the Father to show who God is and demonstrate what life with God is all about—laying down our lives for one another as Jesus lay down his life for us. The ‘restless of the human heart’ finds satisfaction in a life of intima-cy with the Divine. And the gift of the Spirit of God is what ena-bles us to live that “eternal life” here and now. Eternal life is the baptized person's participation in the life of the Trinity, both before and after our biological death.

TODAY'S READINGS

THE INEXPRESSIBLE MYSTERY The God of the universe is mysterious. Science has not been able to solve the mystery of how the universe came into being or explain exactly what continues to give it creative energy and masterful de-sign. No religion asserts that it has found words to name fully the ineffable mystery of God, for no matter what name we use, God always transcends our limited ability to understand. God is a mys-tery to be believed, not known. And yet, we Christians believe that our name for God best expresses that inexpressible mystery: God is the Most Holy Trinity of three persons united in a communion of love, pouring forth that creative, saving, sanctifying love into the world. Today's scriptures celebrate the mystery of the Trinity and give us clues for living that mystery in our lives.

First Reading -- The LORD, merciful and gracious, rich in kind-ness and faithfulness (Exodus 34:4b-6, 8-9). Psalm -- Glory and praise for ever! (Daniel 3). Second Reading -- Brothers and sisters, rejoice. Live with one an-other in peace, and the God of peace will be with you (2 Corinthians 13:11-13). Gospel -- God did not send the Son to condemn the world, but to give it abundant life (John 3:16-18).

Bienvenido a MASON J MORAN e OSCAR DANIEL ESCALANTE PEREZ

The Story of Our Lives No matter what you have heard, it is not so hard to understand the Trinity. Simply think back to the great story we have been celebrating for many weeks.

Let’s tell it one more time.

God the Father invited people on earth to a lasting and loving relationship with him and with each other. “I want to be your God and I want you to be my people. My love for you is tender and precious. Won’t you love me in return?”

Some understood and entered into the agree-ment. Abraham, Isaac, Moses, Elisha, Elijah, just to begin the list. But they and the rest of us humans kept choosing things easier to grab, like money and honors—barns full of them.

Our refusal of God’s love became widespread. How did God react to such rejection?

My people, what have I done to you? How have I offended you? Answer me. For your sake I scourged your captors and their first-born sons, but you brought your scourges down on me! My people, answer me (from “The Reproaches” on Good Friday)!

God tried a new and quite brilliant way. “Since I am all love and nothing but love, I will go out to them totally, as love does. I will become one of them. I will live humanity to its depths, and they will see love spelled out.”

So God was born as a human called Jesus. He was the heart of God, now made flesh. One with the Father but different as well. And so the world knew about two persons in one God.

He told people to love God above all things and their neighbors as themselves.

But many human beings had been hurt and betrayed, living with their own selfishness and greed, as well as their mixed-up mo-tives, co-existing with those of others too. Love can get lost in

such a world.

It was into this ocean of cruelty and loss that God the Son plunged. He dove all the way to down to death. It was a display of the most profound in-sides of God.

To that point the disciples knew only two parts of God, Jesus and his Father (and they were not very sure about these). So before he left, Christ said this to them:

Philip, and the rest of you, if you know me you know the Father. He is in me fully, and after I go back I will make a home in you by sending the Holy Spirit. This Comforter will be the very love that I and the Father have for each other and for you. That way I will be with you until the end of time! (paraphrase)

He was talking about the third person of the Trin-ity, which nestles close to our souls if we let it. Only if we let it. The Holy Spirit is graceful and

deep and comforting, like a blanket in cold winter. It is the love between the Father and Son.

So how can God interact with us in these three very different ways? By being “plural,” that is, by being three “persons.” How can three be one? By not letting the number three be a divider but a plus sign. All three, in a great dynamic of love, are so close to one and other that they are One God.

Now we understand.
