St John the Baptist Parish ~ Haverhill, MA 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ September 27, 2015
Welcome to St. John the Baptist. We’re glad you are here to celebrate Mass with us today. If you are new to our parish or haven’t been
here in awhile, WELCOME. If you would like to register as a parish family, registration forms can be
found at the back of the Church. You can either mail it to the Rectory or drop it in the collection basket.
From the Desk of Fr. Peter DeFazio
On Thursday, September 17th, several
parishioners and I attended the Seventh Annual
Celebration of the Priesthood Dinner. This event is
the primary fundraiser for the Clergy Health and
Retirement Trust. The timing of the dinner
coincides with the placement of in-pew envelopes
that allow parishioners to donate to the trust. The
Clergy Health and Retirement Trust provides for the
medical and retirement needs of senior and retired
priests in the Archdiocese of Boston.
An unexpected but noteworthy speech at the
Celebration of the Priesthood dinner came from
Boston Mayor Marty Walsh. Mayor Walsh spoke
about the importance of priests at various key
moments in his private and public life. And that, in
my mind, is an important takeaway for all of us.
Think about the best priests you've known
throughout your life: the Baptisms, the numerous
Masses, the weddings, the funerals, a kind ear to
speak to amidst personal crisis. . . That's really what
those envelopes in the pews or in the back of the
church are all about. They are a way of saying thank
you to these dedicated men who, now late in their
careers, are dependant upon our assistance.

On another note, a few days ago, 40-days for Life
began its Fall Campaign. What is the goal of 40-
days? To build greater awareness of and to promote
the sanctity of human life. It is a peaceful, highly-
focused, inter-faith initiative that focuses on 40-days
of prayer and fasting, peaceful vigil at abortion
facilities, and grassroots educational outreach.
Last year, Saint James and Saint John the Baptist
parishes participated in the 40-days for Life
campaign by hosting a multi-denominational prayer
vigil. On Saturday, October 17th, a similar inter-
faith gathering will be held. Please consult
upcoming bulletins for information about this and
other related events. Part of the objective of the 40-
days campaign is to raise people's consciences
regarding the dignity of human life. That means all
human life, from conception to natural death.
In the past, Pope Francis has decried abortion as
an example of what he terms a "throw-away
culture." He has also described slavery, sexual
violence, human trafficking, and unjust warfare
as examples of this throw-away culture.
Last year the Pope stated: "It is therefore
necessary to express the strongest possible
opposition to every direct attack on life,
especially against the innocent and defenseless,
and the unborn in a mother’s womb is the
example of innocence par excellence...Anyone
who is Christian has a duty to bear witness to the
Gospel: to protect life courageously and lovingly
in all its phases...But I would also like to speak
about their grandparents, the other side of life!
Because we must also take care of our
grandparents, for both babies and grandparents
are the hope of a people." (Pope Francis, April
11, 2014) So, think of the senior and retired
clergy of the Archdiocese as our grandfathers in
the faith, and support of the Clergy Health and
Retirement Trust as another part of the pro-life
cause.

Men’s Prayer Group St. James Parish is now
sponsoring a Morning Prayer group for men
once a month. Every month we start with an
brief time in front of the blessed sacrament, say
the rosary together and then have a brief
discussion on some part of a life of prayer or
topics related to our faith. We then make space
for a time for coffee and donuts. The whole time
is condensed to one hour. On the first Saturdays
of the month 7:15 AM-8:15 AM. Please join us.
Women’s Prayer Group St James Parish is also
sponsoring a morning prayer group for women
on the second Saturday of the month, the
format will be the same as above. Hope to see
you then.
This past Monday, the newly named Parish
Services Committee met to plan a good list of
Social events for the year. Over the past few
years, we sometimes have been a little rushed
in our planning and have missed some good
opportunities. This year wisely, I believe, we
have planned out as well as we can, many of
the events that help us to gather as a church
community outside of the church. The Parish
Services Committee seeks to strengthen the
bonds of our community and to encourage
others to come and see the parish. Hopefully,
by dinners, blessings and other events, over the
course of the year, we will see growth in our
parish. The combined planning of the
Religious Education calendar and the PSC
events such as coffee and donuts and support of
the some of our great local celebrations
(Children’s Christmas Party, Epiphany
Pageant) reinforce to us the importance of our
collaborating at this level in order to prepare us
for collaboration at the next level when that
eventually comes to us. Peace, Fr. Murray
