For almost 30 years Mrs. Mc Bride was a cherished member of the St. John the Baptist community. Joining the Social Stud-
ies faculty in 1983, she taught Global Studies and Econom-ics, took her students on field trips to Wall Street, initiated the participation of St. John’s students in Newsday’s Stock Market
Game and was subsequently invited to serve on Newsday’s Educational Advisory Board. In addition she was the advisor for
The Prophet, editor of the SJB Family News and worked with Campus Ministry’s support groups. She energetically immersed
herself in life at SJB and was recognized for her efforts in 2000 with the Excellence in Education Award.
In 2008, Mrs. Mc Bride was honored at the Women of Hope Luncheon in recognition of the optimism and faith with which she lived her life. In the face of significant personal challenges and health issues, she was never one to complain or feel sorry
for herself. She saw life’s setbacks as “valleys” and concentrated her efforts on climbing up the “hills”. She did so with both grace and fortitude and in the process gave her family, her students, her colleagues, and all whose lives she
touched, a beautiful example to follow.

Cougars Travel To Serve At Easter TimeMONTANAFifteen students raised funds and volunteered their Easter break to travel to St.Labre Indian School in Montana where SJB grad and former faculty member, Jessica Maddalena ‘02, works as a teacher through the Jesuit Volunteer Corps. Their service involved working with elementary school children, cleaning up the local environment and participating in class-room activities. Mrs. Callahan, Fr. Michael Holzmann, Ms Stein, and Mr. Dan Maher chaperoned and worked side by side with the student volunteers. All students left with a greater appreciation of the Native American people, their culture, history and spirituality.
HABITAT FOR HUMANITYOn Friday, April 30, fourteen SJB students went toEast Patchogue to work with Habitat for Humanity. The girls learned how to vinyl side a house and had a lot of fun in the process. These junior and senior girls are part of the Peace and Justice Group. Many students helped raise $1500 for Habitat through bake sales and our “buy a brick” campaign. The fundraising made this project possible. Fifteen students were chosen to participate in the event based on their dedication and commitment to weekly meetings and fundraising.

St. John’s Graduates the Newest and Eldest Member of the Class of 2010!
At eighty-two years of age, Anthony Sappraicone has just graduated from high school! Walter D. Lace, principal, along with chaplain Fr. Michael Holzmann, presented Anthony with his long awaited high school diploma on Tuesday, May 25th 2010. St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School welcomed the opportunity to participate in Operation Recognition, which is a special program for veterans of World War II, the Korean War, and the Viet Nam War, who were unable to graduate from high school because of their military service. They are now able to obtain their diplomas through the NYS Education Department and the NYS Dept. of Veterans’ Affairs.
Mr. Lace received the request from two alumni, Patricia Sappraicone’72 Boris and Theresa Sappraicone’78 Daspigno. They asked if St. John’s could present their father, Anthony, with a St. John the Baptist DHS diploma. Since they are SJB graduates, as is their brother Anthony ’75, and have fond memories of high school, they hoped that their father too could receive his diploma from St. John’s. Anthony’s wife, Patricia and granddaughter Elizabeth were also present for the recognition ceremony.

Picture perfect weather, the renowned hospitality and generosity of the Lessing family, and the support of SJB alumni, parents and friends combined the make the annual Men of Vision Dinner, held at the
Riverview on Tuesday, June 15, a smashing social and financial success.
Vincent Di CarloIn 1963, Vincent Di Carlo and his brother founded Di Carlo Distributors, a food service company. Since then
Di Carlo Distributors has gone from a two-man operation to a company employing over 250 people. Today Vincent is the President and CEO of the company and is delighted to have his three children, Lisa Di Carlo Yancigay ’81, Vinnie ’85, and Michael ’87 as well
as his son-in-law John Yancigay ’81 working with him in the business. This assures him that Di Carlo Distibutors will be an independent distributor for years to come. Vincent has been a generous supporter of St. John the Baptist since his own children
attended SJB and he and his wife of 47 years now have the joy of seeing their grandchildren follow in their parents’ footsteps. His grandchildren John ’05 and Lauren ’07 Yancigay are now proud SJB alumni. Vincent Yanciagy ’12 and
four additional grandchildren will be joining them in the near future.
Robert ForsterIn 1988 Bob founded Island Steel & Detailing Corp, a company focused primarily on structural steel fabrication and detailing with headquarters located in Manorville. Bob got his start by working at Vulcan Iron Works, a company started by Bob’s grandfather in
1933. Throughout his high school and college years he worked at various jobs for Vulcan and today is the company’s Vice President.A generous and hardworking volunteer, Bob has been a CYO soccer coach at St. John Nepomucene for the past 13 years. He received the Coach of the Year Award in 2009. Currently he serves on the SJB Board of Advisors and is a member of the Development Com-
mittee. His expertise and generosity made the renovation of the bleachers on the football field a reality in the fall. Bob is married to Barbara Baran ’81 and the father of James ’08 and Amanda ’10. Bob tells people he may not be a Catholic school boy, but he is
definitely a Catholic school dad and the SJB family has been greatly enriched by his support.
Brian Maher joined the St. John the Baptist faculty in 1969 as a business teacher. Although he moved on professionally in 1975, he has never really left SJB. A charter member of the Development Board, Brian has been available to promote
and support the many fund raising activities the school has undertaken. He was honored for his volunteer efforts in 2000, when he was inducted into the St. John the Baptist Hall of Fame. In addition to his loyalty to SJB, Brian has been active with Good Samaritan
Hospital, the Eastern Amputee Golf Association, and Good Shepherd Hospice. Recently, Brian completed his term as President of the National Alumni Association of Providence College, his alma mater. He has written a weekly column for the past fourteen years in bulletin of St. Joseph’s Church in Babylon, and can been seen on Telecare in two-minute segments based on these columns entitled,
“Neighbor2Neighbor.” Currently Brian is the Director of the Educational Opportunity Center at Farmingdale State College. His most significant accomplishment, however, has been his 37 year marriage to Barbara, SJB Alumni Director. Their three children, Dan (cur-
rently a teacher at SJB), Tim ’97, and Kara Grace, have been their greatest blessings. Tim and his wife Carly have provided Brian and Barbara with three grandchildren to spoil.

“Strides for Cougar Pride” Walk
The Walk was divided into two segments. First, the inaugural Senior Night took place on Thursday evening, May 20th. This event in-cluded a welcoming barbeque dinner, followed by a brief prayer and then the walk around the campus. Later the seniors went back into the school for numerous activities, including volleyball, badminton, ten-nis, board games, trivia contests, and music.
The next day, the freshmen, sophomores and juniors participated in their Walk and Spirit Day, which opened with a prayer service out on the bleachers, and was followed by many of the same activities enjoyed by the seniors the night before.
St. John the Baptist High School held its first “Strides for Cougar Pride” Walk and Spirit Days to benefit academic and co-curricular activities and pro-vide Smart Board technology in many more SJB class-rooms.
The Cougars celebrated the arrival of the MSG top prize golf cart, decorated with the school mascot and school colors on Thursday May 20th
after school on their athletic field. MSG Varsity was there to interview the school principal, Walter D. Lace, athletic directors, Lorraine Bouklas and Ralph Dalton, and several students who were instrumental in getting
the MSG Spirit Mania contest going and keeping everyone involved.

He is currently retired and re-sides at Corpus Christi Parish in Mineola. In recognition of his service as chaplain and his loyalty to SJB after he was transferred, Msgr. Tarrant was honored at the Gentlemen’s Din-ner in1995, and was inducted into the St. John the Baptist Hall of Fame in 1999. It is with tremendous affection that we join Msgr. Tar-rant in thanking God for the many blessings of his priestly life.
Congratulations to Mrs. Joanne Mamola, of the English Department, who is the
recipient of the 2010 Excellence in Education Award. This award is given
annually to a member of our faculty and attempts to honor those SJB educators, who are lifetime learners and who, by their example and their teaching, mo-tivate others to become the same. The actual award is a crystal apple that is

When schools across Long Island were returning from their Spring Break, St. John the Baptist was welcoming their Middle States Vali-dation Team for a three-day visit . The visit which was a culmination of SJB’s two year Self-Study process, included class observation, meetings with students, faculty, administration and staff members. There was also an examination of the school’s Objectives and Action Plans that identify the school’s focus for the next seven years. The Middle States team consisted of five volunteer educators from the Middle States region. Their summary report presented to the faculty and staff on the last day of the visit began with Sr. Joanne Safian stating, “Our first and continued response to St. John’s over this visit is WOW!” You are an exceptional example of a Catholic school where philosophy is clearly integrated into the daily life of the school. The quality of the faculty and educational programs is outstanding and even with many guidelines for behavior the school still communicates that in a caring and positive manner.“
