Dear Friends - Queridos Amigos,

I share this reflection with you - Comparto con ustedes esta reflexión Jesus’ cousin, John the Baptist, baptized people with water but told his followers that someone was coming who would baptize with the Holy Spirit. Today’s Gospel reading does not record any conversation between John and Jesus, but emphasizes that as John watches Jesus go by, he announces that this man is indeed the promised one, the Lamb of God. Andrew and another man set out to follow Jesus, who turns and asks what they are looking for. Their answer is a strange one: they want to know where he lives. Jesus simply replies, “Come, and you will see.” We are told they stay with him for the whole day. The next day, Andrew finds his brother, Simon, and tells him he has met the Messiah—the Anointed One—and takes Simon to meet Jesus. Like John, Jesus looks hard at Simon, taking the measure of the man, and in the light of what he perceives in him changes his name to Cephas—or as we more commonly know it, Peter (“the rock”). The two encounters seem very ordinary, yet they are life-changing. Jesus is not proclaiming a message, preaching to a crowd, or performing great miracles. Instead, he is simply walking past John, and when Andrew and his friend introduce themselves, offers them hospitality and companionship. When Jesus meets Peter, he does not ask probing questions about his family and his background or make solemn pronouncements. He just looks at the man, makes an assessment of his character, and accepts him as a friend. The simplicity of Jesus’ manner demonstrates his willingness to receive people “as they are” but also to call forth their potential. He does not offer lengthy explanations of who he is, but takes people to his home and lets them see for themselves. Jesus sees you, accepts you, and welcomes you for who you are. Show your gratitude in WORSHIP of God, who loves and saves you; SERVICE to others in the parish and the community;

GIFTS to the church and to good causes of your choice.

God Bless You/Dios los bendiga Fr. Sergio López

Please Register…

Why is it important that we register at St. John the Baptist? Isn’t it good enough that we go to Mass? Why should we bother to use the envelope system?

Registration is the official way we join a parish community. Many people think that because they attend St. John’s they automatically belong. At times young adults who have moved away for years think they are still signed up under their parent’s registration. But membership requires signing up, formally enrolling yourself with St. John’s. Registration is a commitment to a community, a way to be included in the religious, social, and ministerial activities of St. John’s. Your registration affects St. John’s in many ways. Census numbers can determine how many priests are assigned to a church, what benefits and obligations the community has to the diocese, and how Masses, confessions, and devotions are planned and scheduled.

REGISTRATION SHOWS YOU BELONG

It is also necessary for certain benefits, like scheduling sacraments, obtaining sponsor certificates, and getting donation statements for taxes. Registering at St. John’s is a statement of faith and confidence in the life and work of our parish.

The expense of the envelope system is cost effective. Using the envelope system is a way that St. John’s can verify your participation in weekly Mass. If you are receiving envelopes, but not using them, please consider doing this.

GRAND OPENING BIBLE STUDY CLASS HERE AT ST. JOHN’S

Monday, January 22nd from 7:00pm to 8:30pm

Have you planned for your 2018 New Year’s Resolution yet? Come and join us in our Bible study class. Many Catholics don’t have habits of reading the Scriptures. St Jerome said: “Ignorance of Scriptures is the ignorance of Christ.” Truly, we can’t fully understand God and

His mystery of Incarnation without deeply knowing what He speaks to us through the Scriptures.

So come and join us in our Introduction to the Bible class here at St. John. The class will be facilitated by Fr. Thi, Deacon Noe and other core team members. We are going to use the video program called “Unlocking the Mystery of the Bible” by Jeff Cavins, a great biblical scholar, who will walk us through key events in the Bible from Genesis to Revelation.

The class meets every Monday of the month from 7:00pm - 8:30pm, starting Monday, January 22nd in the music room of St. John’s school. This class lasts about three months.

Don’t hesitate, come and join us! You will become “biblical scholars” within three months. Wow!

Fr. Thi and the team (T&T)

Please remember to park in the designated parking stalls only.

Rectory garage area needs to be kept clear for priests to use, especially in the event of emergency calls. Thank you for your co-operation.
