Dear Friends of St. John the Baptist,
Some years ago, when serving as the clergy chairman for the Catho-
lic Diocesan Appeal, I submitted the following story in the Catholic
Appeal Guide used by the different parishes for the annual campaign:
There is an expression that says, “No one is so rich that they
cannot receive. No one is so poor that they cannot have something to
give.” This expression is illustrated in the life of Blessed Mother Teresa
of Calcutta. Mother Teresa related this story:
You must give what will cost you something. Any sacrifice is
useful if it is done out of love. Every day I see this love in children,
men and women. I was once walking down the street and a beggar
came to me and said, “Mother Teresa, everybody is giving to you. I
also want to give to you. Today for the whole day, I got only 29 cents
and I want to give it to you.” I thought for a moment, “If I take it, he
will have nothing to eat tonight. And if I don’t take it, I will hurt him.”
So I put out my hands and took the money. I have never seen such
joy on anybody’s face as I did on his. That a beggar, he too, could give
to Mother Teresa. It was a big sacrifice for that poor man who had
been sitting in the sun all day and had only received 29 cents. It was
beautiful. 29 cents is such a small amount, and I can get nothing with
it. But as he gave it up and I took it, it became like thousands because
it was given with so much love.
Next weekend, May 21st and 22nd, we will be conducting the Dioce-
san Catholic Appeal here at St. John the Baptist. The theme for this
year’s campaign is: Proclaim the Mercy of the Father. Each person or
family will be encouraged to make their pledge to support the work of
our Bishop and his invitation that we share in Christ’s mission of love,
peace, justice and mercy. When you support the Catholic Appeal, you
help in touching thousands of lives, young and old, from every part of
our Diocese. For example, marriages and families are strengthened
through the Office of Marriage and Family Life; Catechists and teachers
receive training and support through the office of Evangelization and
Catechesis so that children and young people can grow in the beauty
of the Catholic faith; young men who aspire to serve as priests are
educated and trained so that all the parishes in the Diocese can be
adequately staffed and served; Rural parishes can continue to provide
the sacraments with the love and support received from the greater
Diocesan Church. These are only a few examples of how the DCA and
your contribution can make a difference. Every gift, no matter how
small, when given with love helps to grow our beautiful Catholic faith.
Every person who is a kid at heart has seen how throwing a pebble
into a pond creates a ripple effect. Similarly, your gift, no matter the
size, will bring about the change that Jesus calls us to create in the
world. As you think about your contribution to the DCA, and prayer-
fully consider what God is asking of you, be assured of my thanks and
gratitude for your heartfelt and generous response.
Sincerely in Christ,
Fr. David Cruz
